Recreation facilities in Montgomery County
include Indoor & Outdoor Swimming Pools, and neighborhood, local, stream
valley, recreational, conservation, and regional parks. The parks collectively
feature community and neighborhood recreation centers, indoor & outdoor
swimming pools, wheelchair & stroller accessible trails (walking, jogging,
biking, horseback riding), undeveloped areas (Conservation parks), playgrounds,
picnic areas, trail head parking, picnic shelters (some covered) & grills,
open space areas, gazebos, ponds, exercise courses or trails, game tables, golf
courses, ball fields (baseball, softball, soccer, football, some lighted),
tennis courts (some lighted, some indoor), basketball, volleyball, handball,
and multi-use courts. The regional parks also offer rentals (exclusive use) of
facilities and features not usually available at the other parks, including
snack bars, camping areas, ice rinks, horseback riding stables, adventure
playgrounds, fishing, boating, boat mooring sites, and nature centers and
programs. Programs available at the regional parks include horseback riding,
tennis, and ice skating lessons. Meadowbrook Riding Stables and Potomac Horse Center
also offer lessons, special events, boarding, and trail rides. Features unique
to specific parks include a pergola at Caroline-Freeland Urban Park, a horse
shoe pit at Damascus Recreational Park, ping pong tables at Kemp Mill Urban
Park, dog exercise area at Ridge Road Recreation Park, Hadley's playground at
Falls Road Local Park, Miniature Train at Cabin John Regional Park, Archery
Range at Rock Creek Regional Park, Lodge at Little Seneca Creek Park, Carousel
& Brookside Gardens at Wheaton Regional Park, and Miniature Golf,
Germantown Golf Park Driving Range, Splash Playground, Discovery Sports Center/Maryland
SoccerPlex, and King Farm Dairy Mooseum at South Germantown Recreational Park.
Recreation programs are provided throughout the county; with regional offices
covering specific areas. Down County office in Potomac provides services for
residents of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, Friendship Heights, West Silver
Spring; East County office in Burtonsville encompasses the communities of
Briggs Chaney, Burtonsville, Fairland, and NE Silver Spring; Mid-County office
in Wheaton takes in Aspen Hill, Brookeville, Olney, Sandy Spring, Wheaton, and
Silver Spring; and Upcounty office in Germantown serves Damascus, Darnestown,
Dufief/Travilah, Montgomery Village, Poolesville, Redland, and Upper Montgomery
County. The community and neighborhood recreation centers collectively offer
activities for children, teens, and adults, seniors and individuals with
disabilities, such as classes, workshops, clinics, drop-in programs, supervised
play, sports, open gym, crafts and special events. The centers offer some
facilities for rental (social hall, kitchen), and collectively feature
exercise/weight rooms, gyms, billiards, and game rooms. Open Gym & Fitness
Center memberships are
available at many of the centers; most also accept class registration on-site.
Individuals with disabilities can participate in Therapeutic Recreation
programs, designed and individualized for them, and providing small group size
and a participant-to-staff ratio appropriate to the needs of the group.
Programs include seasonal classes, such as exercise, swim, adapted karate and
crafts. Recreation Inclusion is also available for individuals who would like
to participate in general recreation programs such as swim classes, craft
classes, trips, camps, children's programs, and special events, with the help of
auxiliary aids and services, such as a mainstream companion, Sign language
interpreters, Braille or large print and other aids and services as needed
(available by request, with a two week minimum for Fall, Winter and Spring; and
three week minimum for Summer).

Trips, and Leaders-In-Training (LIT)
programs are available for teens. Family activities include Family Fun Day,
Chess, Royal Tea Party, Tie-Dye Fun, Aerobic Family Fitness, Badminton,
Climbing for Children & Parents, Table Tennis, and Ride & Stride for Rockville. Adults can

woodworking shop, a ceramics room, a computer lab, a gift shop, a
library/lounge, a thrift shop, classrooms, an exercise room with fitness
equipment, a game room, a greenhouse, and a flower and vegetable garden. The
14.27 acre Swim Center, 355 Martins Lane, offers indoor &
outdoor pools with 150-foot slide, sauna, whirlpool, universal gym, snack bar,
showers, locker rooms, bankshot basketball, swim lessons, RSMC swim team, and
fitness classes. Class registration is available through the City's Rock Enroll
system or by calling 240-762-4284. County owned and operated facilities include
Bauer Drive Community

Community Recreation Center features a gym used for organized leagues,
competitions, classes, and self-directed sports; an exercise/weight room with
self-administered weight and aerobic equipment, conference room, art room,
classroom, lounge area, community room and a social hall (with adjacent full
service kitchen) that accommodates up to 99 for social and dance activities.
The social hall and conference & community rooms are available for rental
for private parties (social hall) or small meetings (in the conference or
community room, up to 25 people). Outdoor facilities include a grassy field,
softball/baseball field, soccer field, football field and two lighted tennis
counts (all available for use on a permit basis from the community center).
Indoor recreation programs include open gym activities, arts and crafts,
exercise/leisure classes, group support meetings and socials, senior citizen
activities (Bauer Drive Seniors), area and county-wide sports programs, family
special events, after school programs, summer camps, programs for individuals
with disabilities, holiday parties for children, and volunteer opportunities.
Open Gym memberships are available for ages 16 and up; an Exercise/Weight Room
membership is required for the use of that facility. Class registrations are

cardiovascular machines (memberships are available); conference rooms
(available to rent for small meetings), art room, a game room equipped with
table tennis, billiards, and foosball, a 10-station computer lab for adults
during all scheduled hours, and children/teens after school; a community lounge
(available to rent for small meetings) and a social hall that accommodates up
to 200 for social and dance activities (available for rent for private parties
and events, includes use of an adjacent warming kitchen and large patio).
Outdoor facilities include a grassy field, softball/baseball field, soccer
field, tennis court, and a basketball court (all maintained by the Maryland-National Capital Park
and Planning Commission). Recreational activities for all ages include open
gym, arts and crafts, exercise/leisure classes such as dance and music,
preschool programs, area and county-wide sports programs, special events and
social gatherings, an after school program (Club REC for children in grades
K-5), summer children's program, Coffield Seniors for older adults (TWTH), and
volunteer opportunities. Class registrations are accepted at the center. East
County Community Recreation Center features a full size gym with basketball,
volleyball and badminton courts and an indoor batting cage, used for organized
leagues, competitions, classes and self-directed 'open gym' play (open gym
memberships are available, open gym basketball for adults age 18 & up meets
on Wednesday nights); an exercise/weight room with self-administered weight
machines and exercise bicycles (memberships are available for those age 16 and
older); a social hall that holds 150 to 200 for social and dance activities
(available to rent or private parties, includes use of an adjacent, small
warming kitchen); a community room & a conference room (both available to
rent for small meetings of up to 25 people); a game room with table tennis,
billiards, foosball, electronic basketball and air hockey machines; an art room
equipped with worktables, potters wheels and kilns for scheduled classes, a
front desk and a lobby area. Recreational activities include sports, fitness,
dance, music, art, special events, and social gatherings. Class registrations
are accepted at the center. Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center features
an all-purpose room that accommodates up to 70 for social and dance activities
(available to rent for private parties, conferences, and community meetings, an
adjacent warming kitchen is available for use); a gym (open gym basketball for
members meets on Wednesday nights); and a lobby. Outdoor facilities include
baseball fields, basketball & tennis courts, a play area for children, and
a 70 space parking lot. Recreation programs include Sprayground, operated by
certified aquatics staff during the summer (call aquatics at 301-989-1206 for
dates and hours of operation); Chinese American Senior Service Association
(CASSA) Bilingual senior program offering leisure, educational, cultural, and
fitness and wellness opportunities for senior adults, ages 55 and over; and
Micro-Flyers Club (301-460-4088) offering the public instruction on how to
construct a micro-plane (usually wood crafted, band powered models) and fly it.
Class registrations are accepted at the center. Long Branch Community
Recreation Center features a regulation size gym with basketball, volleyball
and badminton courts for a organized leagues, competitions, classes and
self-directed 'open gym' play; an exercise/weight room with self-administered
weight machines and exercise bicycles (3 month, 6 month and annual memberships
are available); an art room equipped with worktables and a kiln, used for
classes and self-directed work; a lounge/lobby area with table tennis,
billiards, and foosball, a community room, & a meeting room (each available
for rent for groups of 25 or less), a social hall that can accommodate 200 to
250 for social and dance activities (available to rent for private parties,
with the use of an adjacent warming kitchen available); and a computer lab.
Outdoor grounds include a small grass area with grills and picnic tables, and
the adjacent Long Branch Outdoor Pool. Recreation programs include sports,
fitness, dance, music, art, social gatherings, Long Branch Seniors for older adults,
and special/community events. Class registrations are accepted at the center.
Handicapped accessible Martin Luther King, Jr. Swim Center (MLK) features an eight-lane 25-meter stretch pool
with a movable bulkhead, allowing for a separate diving area with one-and
three-meter diving boards and a five-meter platform; a Teach Pool for children,
the handicapped and seniors in an adjacent wing; a hydrotherapy pool, weight
and exercise room, dressing facilities and a multi-purpose room. Swim
activities include lap swim, recreational swim, water fitness classes, swim
lessons, kayaking, lifeguard training, water safety and lifeguard instructor
courses, and CPR; swim team, dive team and masters swimming are also available.
Outdoor aquatic facilities include Martin Luther King Jr. Outdoor Pool and Long
Branch Pool; golfers can visit Gaithersburg Hampshire Greens and White Oak. Silver Spring's county parks collectively feature
playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts (some lighted), ball fields (softball,
baseball, soccer, multi-use), basketball courts, picnic shelters (open &
covered) and recreation facilities. Features unique to particular parks include
an open field at Fairview Road Urban Park, 8900 Fairview Road; game tables at
Royce Hanson Urban Park, 8787 Georgia Avenue; a resting area at Fenton Street

programs, a volleyball league for children in grades 4-5 and a clinic for teens

ages 4-5 & their parents. Youth soccer leagues, for boys and girls in
grades 1-6, play on Saturdays at Lakelands, Robertson, and Kelley Parks. Flag
football teams play at Lakeland’s
Park Auxiliary Field (gr. 1-6) or Morris Park (gr. 7-8). Girls' Machine Pitch
Softball League (gr. 4-5) uses Lakelands
Park on Saturdays for
their games. Sports leagues/classes also include Coed Baseball, Girls &
Men's Softball, T-ball, Youth/Teen/Women's/Adult Coed Volleyball Casey
Community Center hosts Creative Tot Time Program, a school-year preschool for
children ages 3-4 (9:00-11:30 AM) that offers arts and crafts, music time,
story time, show and tell and field trips. Elementary school age children can
participate in "Amazing Afternoons", an after school recreation program.
The aquatic center offers child swim lessons starting at 6 months of age and
grouped by ability; and adult swim lessons from beginner through intermediate
levels. Other swim programs include Competitive Stroke & Turn Clinic, and
Gaithersburg Winter Swim for children ages 9 years through high school (at
least one season of swim team experience). Gaithersburg Arts Barn houses
artists-in-resident studios, an art exhibition gallery, a 99-seat theater, and
the City Art Shop (on the first floor). Half day summer workshops at the barn
for youth ages 6-14 (ages vary for specific programs) include Adventures in
Art, Wearable Art and Fibers, Filling the Stage: A Theatre Experience,
Escapades in Paint, Clowning around the Barn, Improvisation and Comedy, Photography
and Scrapbooking, Sewing Fun, Paper beyond Drawing, Musical Theatre, Inspired
by the Masters, Mystery of Magic, and Vocal Performance; summer camp sessions
are also offered in specialized visual or performing art areas. The theater
hosts classes, lectures, and workshops for all ages by performing artists
(actors, directors, stage technicians), covering theater performances such as
comedy, repertory, monologues, pantomime and puppetry. Arts Barn Classes for
all ages include painting, drawing, quilting, stained glass, acting, and music.
Bohrer Park's Activity Center hosts a Community Chorus (no audition required),
sponsored by the Council for the Arts, for teens age 14 & up, and adults;
the chorus performs at senior citizen facilities, local malls, and civic events
and offers two formal concerts each year; rehearsals are weekly on Tuesday
evenings. Other classes/activities include dance (e.g. ballet, line dance),
fitness (e.g. yoga), health/wellness (e.g. CPR), gymnastics, karate, music
(e.g. little musicians, musical babies), special interest (e.g. puppy/dog
obedience), and sports (e.g. tennis). Summer camp programs include general
recreational camps offering sports, swimming at the Water Park, arts and
crafts, games, team building, exercises, field trips and special events for
both elementary and middle school age youth (before- & after camp care is
available for both age groups); and specialty camps, including sports clinics
(basketball, soccer, field hockey, tennis, volleyball); Gaithersburg School of
Basketball (sessions for boys and girls, directed by the head basketball coach
at Quince Orchard High); School of Skate program (hosted by America In-line,

Woodward Park, open daily for residents and
non-residents, features a basketball court, baseball/soccer field, picnic area,
and playground for young children. The picnic area is available on a one-day
reservation basis for family picnics. Town residents, property owners, and
those sponsored by residents can reserve the soccer or baseball fields for
sports practices (by special permit). Maple Lake,
open to town residents and their guests, offers swimming during the summer,
staffed with a lifeguard in the afternoons from noon to 5 PM,
with free swim lessons available in July; an instructional tennis camp at the
lake's tennis courts facility is also available during the summer
(301-926-8767).
McCathran Hall is available for rental to town residents as well as
resident-sponsored individuals.
Montgomery
