Recreational facilities in Loudoun County include 725-acre Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Leesburg, 357-acre Claude Moore Park in Sterling, 203-acre Franklin Regional Park in Purcellville; and nearly 2 dozen other parks, ranging in size from 1-124 acres. Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, open to the public on weekend days, houses a variety of wildlife, features rolling hills and frontage along Goose Creek, and hosts a Volunteer Day the third Saturday of each month dedicated to activities such as setting up aquariums; collecting things for the nature center (feathers, old nests, bones, etc); laying out, marking, and measuring trails; and helping draw maps of the preserve. The parks collectively feature trails (hiking, biking, walking, cross-country training, horseback riding, dog walking), picnic pavilions, ponds, boat launches (rowboats, canoes, kayaks), lighted and unlighted athletic fields (football, flag football, baseball, softball, Little League, soccer, lacrosse, rugby), volleyball, basketball, & tennis courts, in-line hockey rinks, playgrounds, restrooms, and parking areas. Features unique to particular parks include a gazebo at 9-acre Beth Miller Park, and a snack bar at Greg Crittenden Memorial Park. Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST), a designated National Recreation Trail, includes 15 miles dedicated in 2006 as a linear park in Loudoun County, serving as natural footpath following the southern bank of the Potomac River. Recreation programs and organizations in Loudoun County include recreation classes, before and after school care, sports leagues for youth and adults, programs for people with special needs, and the Area Agency on Aging, which offers activities and programs for seniors. Adaptive recreation activities for youth and adults include Special Olympics, VSA arts, day camp, sled hockey, developmental sports programs, visual & performing arts (VSA arts of Virginia) swimming/water safety, social clubs, classes, dances, trips, and overnights.

Recreational facilities in Leesburg include 138-acre Ida Lee Park, 86-acre Veterans Park at Balls Bluff, 32-acre Edwards Landing Park, 8-acre Potomac Crossing Park, 1-acre Rotary Park, 3-acre Brandon Park, 3-acre Raflo Park, 9-acre Foxridge Park, 1/2-acre Georgetown Park, 1/2-acre Catoctin Skate Park, 10-acre Carrvale Park, 29-acre Tuscarora Creek Park, 21-acre Olde Izaak Walton Park, and 20-acre Freedom Park. The parks collectively feature open space, basketball courts, baseball fields, playgrounds, trails, picnic tables, picnic shelters, pavilions (available for rental, capacity of 60 per pavilion), benches, and W&OD Trail access. Features unique to particular centers include a gazebo at Raflo Park; a multi-purpose field at Robinson Park; and a youth softball/soccer field and restroom at Foxridge Park. Catoctin Skate Park, on Catoctin Circle next to the Rescue Station, features a street skate area with half pipes, quarter pipes, rails, ramps and fun boxes. Veterans Park at Balls Bluff is located along the Potomac River next to Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's Balls Bluff Park. Permanent access to the park is planned in the future and a passive-use master plan has been developed for proposed uses of the park. Potomac Crossing Park will have access from Shanks Evans Road; plans are in place for future public use of the park. Edwards Landing Park, in the Edwards Landing development, offers access to the Potomac Heritage Trail. Freedom Park, Evergreen Mill Rd and Tolbert Lane (next to Simpson Middle School. 9-11 Memorial Garden), features softball fields, a football field and a field house with concessions. Olde Izaak Walton Park includes a dog park area, a 3 1/2 acre pond, a stream, and a 7,500 square foot building. Future plans may include passive uses such as a nature center, fishing pier, picnic facilities, and a playground. A.V. Symington Outdoor Pool offers recreational swimming to residents & non-residents (daily admission), as well as 15-visit or 25-visit passes for town residents; a Summer Evening Swimming Activity Calendar is available; the AV Symington Indoor Tennis Center features Deco Turf courts, a viewing area, and a central lobby. Ida Lee Park is the main recreation facility in Leesburg, outdoor features include soccer/lacrosse fields, 7-court outdoor lighted tennis complex, playground, picnic shelter, tables, bandstand, trails, community garden plots, a gazebo and a pavilion. Billy Cox Pavilion can hold up to 45 people and is available for rentals; the gazebo, also available for rent, can hold up to 50 people, the surrounding area can accommodate larger groups with their own tents, chairs, tables and grills. The park houses a recreation center that features indoor pools, gym, fitness room, racquetball courts, aerobics/dance studio, childcare room, preschool room, arts/crafts room, meeting rooms, a 3,000 square foot event/meeting space, and a full service warming/catering kitchen. The fitness center includes a variety of cardiovascular machines, selectorized equipment, and free weights; offers group fitness classes such as step, kickboxing, cycle, yoga, pilates, as well as deep and shallow water aqua fitness, and provides personal trainers (by appointment); A Place for the Kids Childcare accommodates the children, ages 3 months to 10 years, of patrons using the facility (maximum of 2 hours). General recreational classes offered include American Red Cross Classes and babysitting certification; Aquatics (Learn to swim classes for all ages, aquatic exercise classes, swim teams for youth and adult, water safety training classes, lifeguard training, adaptive aquatics, diving lessons, parent/infant swim lessons, private swim lessons, and special events); Arts & Crafts (all ages); Camps (Seasonal and summer, preschool through 8th grade); Dance (jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, and creative movement, ages 2-14, swing and ballroom dance for adults); Kaleidoscope Children's Performance Series; Nature Classes (ages 4-6); State Licensed Preschool; Sports (tennis, soccer, lacrosse, fencing, youth flag football league, baseball workshops, skating lessons, youth gymnastics); Tots & Play Dates; Trips; Special Interests (e.g. guitar, cooking); and Special Events, including The Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival in April, Independence Day Celebration (4th of July), Court and Market Days in October, and Holidays in Leesburg in December, and smaller events such as an Egg Hunt, Winter Holiday Jamboree, Arts and Craft Shows, and Family Dances. County owned and operated parks include 725-acre Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, 21085 The Woods Road, 703-669-0316; and 10-acre Lucketts Community Park, 42361 Lucketts Road. Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve is open to the public on weekends from 8 AM to 4 PM; Friends of Banshee Reeks sponsors a Volunteer Day on the 3rd Saturday of each month for activities such as setting up aquariums; collecting things for the nature center (feathers, old nests, bones, etc); laying out, marking, and measuring trails; and helping to draw maps of the preserve. Lucketts Community Park (just south of Lucketts School and Community Center) features a soccer field, a lighted adult softball field, and a trails network.

 

 

Ashburn Recreation Loudoun County Parks and Recreation

Recreational facilities in Ashburn include the recreational amenities in Ashburn Village, which features recreation centers, tot lots, tennis courts, jogging and bike trails, ball and soccer fields, and over 500 acres of open outdoor space with six lakes and ponds stocked annually for fishing for the occupants of its 5071 residential units; 32,000 square foot Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion, the recreational focus of the complex, maintained by Ashburn Village Community Association, offers indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools, an exercise, aerobic, and Advanced Training Center, sauna and steam room, a full-size gym with bleachers and childcare facilities, and a marina and pier for non-motorized boating. Seven city or county owned and operated parks collectively feature baseball/softball fields (some lighted), soccer fields, trails, tot lots, and parking lots. Features unique to specific parks include a snack bar at 16-acre Greg Crittenden Memorial Park, 21401 Windmill Dr; an in-line hockey rink, and a kiosk at 20-acre Trailside Park (on Claiborne Pkwy about one mile north of Hay Rd); a picnic pavilion and 3 age-appropriate playgrounds at 16-acre Ashburn Park, 43645 Partlow Rd; soccer fields and restrooms in the 30-acre active section of 124-acre Bles Park (44830 Riverside Parkway in the University Center development) and wetlands with sections of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail and Broad Run Corridor Trail in its 94-acre passive activities area. The Ashburn section of the W&OD trail (part of the 45-mile long W&OD Railroad Regional Park) offers bicycling, hiking, and horseback riding; 3-acre Ashburn Annex features basketball courts. Windmill West Park, across the street from Crittenden Park, houses the Ashburn Farm Visitors Center. Ashburn Farm, Broadlands, and Farmwell Hunt house swimming pools (residency or membership requirements may apply). Brambleton Regional Park, Belmont Ridge Rd (Rte 659) and Rte 772 (near Beaverdam Reservoir) houses an18-hole, par-72 championship golf course. 78,000 square feet Ashburn Ice House, 21595 Smiths Switch Rd, 703-858-0300, features a video arcade, cafe, locker rooms, meeting and party rooms, a mezzanine and second-floor viewing area, and seating for hundreds.

 

 

Lovettsville Recreation: Lovettsville Community Center 57 E Broad Way Lovettsville VA 20180 540-822-5284

Recreational facilities in Lovettsville include Lovettsville Community Center, Town Square, Town Green, and Lovettsville Community Park. Town Square and Town Green (located within the Town Center development, west of Town Square) have picnic areas, walking paths, and facilities for other passive recreation activities; Town Green hosts free movie showings monthly (2nd Friday) during the summer (sponsored by Town and Community Center). Lovettsville Community Center features an outdoor swimming pool, playground, baseball field, lighted tennis courts, basketball court, garden, gym, classrooms, child care facility, commercial kitchen, and music/meeting room. A variety of recreational/educational programs are offered for all ages, including state licensed preschool & child care (ages 3-5, 540-822-5284) and after school care (CASA, 540-822-5284), sports, fitness/exercise, arts & crafts, gymnastics; and special events such as Legomania, Spaghetti Dinner, Family movie nights, Halloween Party, Oktoberfest dinner, Decorated Bike workshop and Lantern Parade. Lovettsville Community Park, a 91-acre joint venture of Loudoun County and the Town of Lovettsville, is under development east of town along Milltown Road; current plans are for ball fields (soccer, baseball), community garden, nature study area, off-leash dog park, walking trails, fishing pond,  amphitheater, equestrian facility (riding rink), and hiking trails.

 

 

Middleburg Parks: Loudoun County Parks and Recreation 215 Depot Court SE Leesburg VA 20175 703-777-0343

Recreational facilities in Middleburg include Glenwood Park, Middleburg Community Center, and county owned and operated Mickie Gordon Memorial Park. Glenwood Park is an equestrian facility used since 1911 that hosts a number of horse-related events and equestrian activities year-round. Middleburg Community Center (540-687-6373), a non-profit agency funded through private donations and grants, offers programs for all ages, in conjunction with the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, including preschool, after school child care, youth and adult programs, summer swim lessons, Parent’s Night Out and yoga. Mickie Gordon Memorial Park on Carters Farm Lane features baseball fields (one lighted), soccer fields, tennis courts, a Little League field, a picnic pavilion, and a small pond for fishing.

 

 

Purcellville Recreation: Loudoun Valley Community Center 320 W School St Purcellville VA 540-338-4122

Recreational facilities in Purcellville include Purcellville Skating Rink, 250 S Nursery Ave., 540-338-5025; Teen Center, 17738 Lincoln Road, 703-431-7784; and Loudoun Valley Community Center. Loudoun Valley Community Center hosts a variety of recreation activities for all ages, including fitness and sports (703-777-0456 for sports hotline/cancellations) and community events, such as Film Series (Feb. 14-Chocolat), Murder Mystery (Feb. 21), Spring Blowout, and Tally Ho Improvisation (Comedy). The center, located at the former Purcellville Elementary School, houses a state Licensed Preschool; offers summer camp programs (preschool & elementary school age children); and provides a weight room equipped with toning, fitness, strengthening & therapeutic apparatus and staffed with trainers. The Teen Center, open from 7-9 PM for middle school students and 9-11 PM for high school students, is equipped with a Four square XBox-360 on big screen digital TVs, Dance-dance Revolution, Shuffleboard, Ping Pong Tables, Arcade style games, Foosball, Board games, Guitar/instrument, Audio/video entertainment, a Basketball court (free play and organized games), and a Social area. Special events include Dance contests. Refreshments and some arcade-style games have a small cost; all other activities are free. County owned and operated parks include 203-acre Franklin Regional Park, 17501 Franklin Park Drive, 540-338-7603, which features a playground & picnic area; a summer catch-and-release fishing pond that hosts Friday Fishing classes; a swimming area; sand volleyball, in-line hockey, and tennis courts; sports fields (baseball, Little League/softball, Little League/softball, football/rugby/lacrosse); sledding, snowboarding, or cross country skiing hills (winter months); and two 3.5 mile perimeter tails; the inner one mainly for horseback riding; and the outer one for hiking, biking, walking, cross-country training, and dog walking (leashed dogs only).

 

 

Sterling Recreation: Claude Moore Park 21544 Old Vestal's Gap Road Sterling, VA 20164 571-258-3700

Recreational facilities in Sterling include Sterling, Claude Moore, and Briar Patch Parks. Sterling Park features a playground and sports fields; and hosts SterlingFest, which offers foods, crafts, business, health, technical, informational, and religious vendors and sponsors; and entertainment such as children's activities and rides, the Sterling Playmakers, local musicians, and a visit by Lexie Overholt ("Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen"). 357-acre Claude Moore Park, county owned and operated, features diverse habitats including wetlands, meadows, and forests in the nature section of the park, which includes 11 miles of hiking trails (the blue-blazed Scout Trail, at 3.5 miles, is the longest one of them, dedicated to the scouts in recognition of scouting service projects to enhance the park). The nature area of the park also houses the Lanesville Heritage Area, the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum, two covered picnic pavilions (available for rent), a Visitor Center, an Education Center, an amphitheater, and Frogshackle Nature Center, an 1860’s log cabin; educational programs on nature & environmental topics are offered to the public, and on special request, nature programs for school groups, scouts, community organizations, adults, and families. The park also offers two fishing ponds (mainly large-mouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill), and provides picnic tables and charcoal grills scattered throughout the nature area, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The active recreation area of the park houses Claude Moore Recreation Center & The Sportsplex, which features lighted baseball & softball fields, a lighted football field, and an unlighted practice field (the fields also host soccer, lacrosse, and flag football programs); and houses a two-story central building with concession stand, two single restrooms, and meeting space. Special events/programs in the park include a spring Eggstravaganza, Spring Trail Clean-Up, Wings Over Loudoun Bird Fest, National Trails Day, an early summer Fishing Derby, an Ol' Time 4th of July Celebration, the annual Arts & Crafts Show, and the Third Annual 5K Run/Walk sponsored by The Friends of Claude Moore Park & the Loudoun County Employee Advisory Committee (2009's event held on Sat, May 9). 5-acre Briar Patch Park features age-appropriate playgrounds, a picnic pavilion with tables, and volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts.
