The Frederick County Division of Parks and Recreation develops, runs and maintains the county parks; and, through its recreation division and area recreation councils, provides recreational activities, including adult aerobics, after school programs, summer/spring/winter break day camps, classes, therapeutic programs for individuals with disabilities, and trips/tours. Recreation facilities include Kemptown, Buckeystown, Urbana, Libertytown, and Middletown Community Parks; Ballenger Creek, Roddy Road, Point of Rocks, Pinecliff, Loy's Station, Creagerstown, and Fountain Rock Parks; and Deer Crossing, Centerville, Oakdale and Catoctin Recreation Centers (all located at an elementary or middle school). The parks, which range in size from 7 acres to 129 acres, collectively feature lighted and unlighted athletic fields (baseball, softball, little league, football, soccer), lighted and unlighted tennis & basketball courts, playground equipment, open playfields, horseshoe pits, nature and walking trails, concession stand areas/buildings, picnic tables, picnic shelters (some available to reserve, with fee), grills & barbecues, fishing areas, boat ramps and historic covered bridges. Kemptown Community Park features an amphitheater. Pinecliff Park houses the Browning Building (available for rental and reservations), and features a winter sled run and ice skating. Middletown Community Park features an electric car racetrack, marble playing courts, a disc golf course, and restroom facilities. Fountain Rock Park focuses on nature programs; offering a nature-themed summer camp for children, housing a nature center, and featuring a quarry, lime kiln, and boardwalk. Old National Pike District Park offers volleyball nets. The recreation councils offer a variety of programs; Ballenger Creek offers youth & adult sports (soccer, lacrosse, softball, basketball); Brunswick Area offers basketball, volleyball, canal hikes, bike rides, and special events such as Halloween haunted house; Middletown sponsors teen dances and an Independence Day celebration; Woodsboro/New Midway focuses on sports (basketball, baseball, softball, etc.); Libertytown offers sports (basketball soccer, softball, baseball, cheerleading), and special events; and Urbana sponsors adult dinner dances on Halloween and Valentine's Day. Rose Hill Manor Park houses a Children's Museum, which offers a history camp in the summer, colonial crafts demonstrations, historic interpretive tours (seasonal hours, reservations for group tours of 10 or more), and special events such as a Christmas Open House, Spring & Fall Festivals, and Civil War Encampment. Frederick County Senior Recreation Council serves adults age 50 & up countywide, offering exercise classes, hiking, softball, basketball, bowling, badminton, bridge, computer class, chorus, bicycling and trips (small fee for activities). The recreation centers collectively feature baseball & soccer fields, basketball courts, play equipment, indoor recreation rooms and gyms; all centers offer open gym and recreation classes. Frederick County Special Olympics, 5311 Ivywood Dr North, 301-694-7779, offers a year round sports training & competition program for county residents age 8 & up who have cognitive challenges. Frederick County Parks & Recreation, Rock Creek School, Community Living, Bethesda Lutheran Group Home, and other organizations/facilities participate in the program.

Recreational facilities in Frederick include 27 parks, which collectively feature tennis, volleyball & basketball courts (some lighted), football, baseball (including Little League) & softball fields (some lighted), swimming pools, playgrounds (including tot lots), pavilions with picnic tables (some covered and/or lighted), picnic shelters, multi-purpose buildings (including fitness centers), and restrooms (not available at all parks). The swimming pools include features such as slides, concessions & pool house, dressing room, restrooms, pool basketball & volleyball, kiddie pool, tumble buckets, floatables, and other water park equipment (specific features & equipment may vary between pools). Features unique to particular parks include a pavilion with a fireplace at College Estates Park, Wilson Place at Taney Ave; a lighted rollerblade court at McCurdy Memorial Park, South Jefferson St. at Scholl's Lane; lighted horseshoe pits at Maryvale Park, off West Patrick St across from Frederick Middle School; a multi-purpose building at Staley Park, Motter Ave & West 10th St; a T-Ball field at Carrollton Playground, Carrollton Dr. & Center St; built-in chess-checkerboard tables at Bonita Maas Mini-Park on West 2nd St; and an open area for sports at Golfview Park, Hunting Horn Lane off Butterfly Lane. Coventry Park, 1321 Schaffer Dr; is handicapped accessible, and also features walking/bike paths, electricity, benches, a drinking fountain, and a 16 space parking lot. Hill Street Park, 100 Hill St, has lighting for all its facilities, which include a skate park, picnic grills, pathways and fields, multi-purpose fields, in-line hockey courts, and a 260 space parking lot. Baker Park, an approximately 6-block long linear park parallel to Carroll Creek, offers a gazebo, small covered handicapped picnic shelter, bench, fishing lake, and band shell seating up to 800. 17,000 sq. ft. Hillstreet Skate Park features a concrete surface, clover bowl, full street area, ledges and rails; and offers summer skate camps for youth ages 8-14 on weekday mornings (seven 1-week sessions, 6/29-8/14). Residents/Non-residents can purchase a punch card or annual pass, or pay a daily admission fee. Clustered Spires Golf Course, 8415 Gas House Pike, 301-600-1295, offers an 18-hole PGA recognized course; season memberships are available ($45, Apr. 1-Nov. 15) in Clustered Spires Golf Association, includes membership in Golfnet (Mid Atlantic Handicap Program), Bi-monthly, Sat AM tournaments (flighted), and awards & Year-end Championship Tournament. City parks are generally open to the public from dawn to dusk daily (some parks have evening hours until 10 PM), many parks have a reservation fee (mainly for athletic fields and pavilions/picnic shelters) of $15 or $50 for residents (twice that for non-residents); Baker Park fees can run up to $200. Special purpose facilities include Frederick Municipal Airport Park, where the city maintains 336 acres, available with official permission, to model airplane enthusiasts. New facilities in Frederick include 148 acre Hargett Farm (off Butterfly Lane), the future home of West Side Regional Park, which will feature lighted sports fields with restrooms and parking, for all team sports; and, in future phase of development, an aquatic center housing indoor/outdoor pools and a water park, and offering open family swim, swim lessons, and other aquatic programs available at existing pool facilities; and Frederick City Dog Park, 212 Carroll Pkwy, across from Baker Park; site for a Dog Etiquette class (handlers only, age 16 & up), and a Dog Obedience Class (dogs ages 4 months & up/handlers age 16 & up, 1st class session at Talley Recreation Center). Park Pavilions (small/medium/large), and band shells, are all available to rent; $15/$30/$50 for pavilions, $100 for band shell, resident rates (double for non-residents), pavilions without restrooms rent at small pavilion rate, 301-600-1493 for info/reservations. Talley Recreation Center Rentals include the Gym, Kitchen, Meeting Rooms and Equipment (Tables, Chairs). Recreation classes, programs, and activities include Crafts (all ages), Tennis (age 4 & up, age 6 & up for private lessons), Tennis Camps (ages 10-15), Junior Team Tennis League (ages 9-17), Log Cabin Learning (Science/Recreation, Baker & City Skate Parks, ages 7-14), Foreign Language: French, Arabic, Chinese, German, American Sign Language (ASL), Spanish, Spanish/Latin Cuisine/Cooking (through Language Learning Foundation, Immersion for Preschoolers-ages 3-4, all other classes for age 16 & up), Art (Young Rembrandts, ages 3 1/2-12); Special Interests (age 18 & up; Tech Savvy Adults, Ladies Handgun Course, Self Defense for Women, Community Wind Ensemble), American Red Cross Review/Classes/Certification/Re-certification: First Aid, CPR-Adult, Adult & Child, Child & Infant, AED (Automatic External Defibrillator, participants must already be CPR trained/certified), Summer Camps (ages 6-12), Summer Playgrounds (ages 6-14), Angels in the Park Summer Preschool (ages 4-5, 9-3, before- & after-care avail., 8-9 AM,  3-5 PM); Sports Clinics (Basketball, gr. 1-9; Volleyball, ages 9-12; Ultimate Frisbee, age 12 & up), Young Rembrandts Arts Camps (ages 6-12): Pastel Drawing, African Safari, Cartooning under the Sea, Flavors of the Arts. Recreation facilities in Brunswick include Brunswick City Park, which is available to rent for weddings, parties, picnics and other special events; and Square Corner Park, at the corner of Potomac St. and Petersville Rd in Brunswick Town Center, which has a pavilion and grounds that can be reserved for private use.

Recreational facilities in Emmitsburg include 59 acre Community Park, along Lincoln and Jamison Avenues, which features men's and women's softball fields, Babe Ruth playing field and a swimming complex; and 5.5 acre Memorial Park along Chesapeake and Potomac Avenues, which offers a lighted picnic pavilion, grills, playground, baseball and Little League field and restroom facilities.

Emmitsburg also has a watershed area, where hunting and fishing are allowed with a town permit (hunting & fishing licenses are required to obtain a free permit, town residency is also required for a hunting permit).

Recreation facilities in Middletown include Memorial Park (behind the Harp Medical Center at South Church and Franklin Streets), Wiles Branch Park (south-side of Alt. 40 next to Brookridge South subdivision), Remsberg Park (88 acre facility, in the planning stage), and county owned and operated Middletown Community Park (off Coblentz Rd, between the Middletown School Campus and the Foxfield development). The Memorial & Wiles Branch Parks collectively feature Pavilions with BBQ grills, Play Equipment, and Basketball Courts. Memorial Park also offers a Softball Field, Horseshoe pit, and the NY Yankee Charlie Keller Memorial. Wiles Branch Park also features Picnic Tables, a full size Football/Soccer Field, and a Walking Path. 79 acre Middletown Community Park features Lighted Basketball Courts, Grills, Horseshoe Pits, Picnic Shelters (by reservation, 301-600-1646), Picnic Tables, Play Equipment, Soccer Fields, Trails, Sand Volleyball Courts, Radio Control Race Car Track, Marble Rings, Football Field, Bandstand, and Disc Golf. Middletown Valley Athletic Association, Inc. (MVAA) 31 W Main St., Suite A, offers athletic programs for local residents.

Recreation facilities in Mt Airy include 9 parks (East-West, Prospect, Summit Ridge, Twin Arch, Twin Ridge, Vest Pocket, Village Gate, Watkins, and Wildwood). The parks collectively feature playgrounds, ball fields (football, baseball, softball, soccer), tennis courts, picnic pavilions (available to reserve), and trails. Prospect Park's pavilion offers a grill and public drinking fountain; the park also features street hockey, a basketball court, and a fishing pond. Summit Ridge Park offers a horse shoe pit and a volleyball court. Watkins Park houses a gazebo and a skateboard area (301-829-8373). Mt. Airy hosts four annual events: Spring Fling in May, Flag Day in June, Festival on the Ridge in October, and Christmas in Olde Town in December.

Recreation facilities in Myersville include Doub's & Grindstone Run Parks, athletic fields (baseball, soccer). Doub's Park features benches and trees (recently planted); a nature trail is in the planning stages. Grindstone Run Park features a newly created sign, and picnic tables. Sports groups, including Myersville Junior Baseball League, Wolfsville Myersville Athletic Association, and Middletown Valley Athletic Association, organize athletic programs, including baseball and soccer. Myersville Parks and Recreation Committee also plans/coordinates recreational programs and events, and oversees recreational facilities.

Recreational facilities in Thurmont include 6 parks and the East End Recreation Center, which collectively feature Tot Playgrounds, Tennis Courts, Softball Fields, Pavilions (available for reservation), Benches, Grills, and Gazebos (including one to honor military veterans). Ice Plant Park also features a Playground; East End Recreation Center houses a Baseball Field; Community Park offers Horseshoes, a Basketball Court, and a Fitness Trail; Eyler Road Park features Soccer, Lacrosse, & Football Fields, and an Ice Skating Rink; Mechanicstown Square Park offers a Fountain, and a Chess/Checker Board Table; and Memorial Park hosts a community concert series. Local Events include the annual Firemen's Carnival/Parade in July (Guardian Hose Fire Company,t 301-271-3413), Colorfest Celebration in October (301-271-4432), and Christmas in Thurmont during December (includes the Town Tree Lighting and the Residential Outdoor Christmas Lighting Judging).

Recreational facilities in Walkersville include 4 parks, which collectively feature baseball & softball fields, pavilions (some covered, all available for rental) and playground equipment/areas. Walkersville Community Park also features a volleyball court, fitness trail, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and picnic tables with grills. Heritage Farm Park, on Devilbiss Bridge Road, across from Glade Elementary, houses a 9-hole golf course, 18-hole disc golf course, soccer fields and multi-purpose fields (available for use when not used or reserved by the Glade Valley Athletic Association), garden plots (available for rent), swing sets, a historic manor house with outbuildings, yard waste recycling and compost piles (near the water tower) and a horse ring (available when not being used or reserved by the Heritage Equestrian Association). Creamery Park, corner of Pennsylvania Ave and S Glade Rd, features a basketball court; and Gilmore C. Trout Memorial Park, corner of Sandstone and Bedrock Drives in the Sun Meadow subdivision, offers a fire hydrant fountain, blue "trout stream" sidewalk, and riding spring toys.
