Recreational facilities in Fairfax County
include 9 indoor recreation centers (all are open daily with extended hours), 8
golf courses, 5 nature and visitor centers, 8 distinctive historic properties
available for rent, several lakes, including Lake Fairfax,
Lake Accotink and Burke Lake,
and 2 campgrounds. The county parks collectively feature picnic shelters,
tennis courts, athletic fields (both county & school-owned, which the
county maintains), miniature trains, carousels, miniature golf courses, disc
golf courses, off-leash dog parks, amphitheaters, and marinas. The recreation
centers (Audrey
Moore, Cub Run,
GW, Lee District, Mt Vernon, Oak Marr, Providence, South Run & Spring Hill)
collectively feature gyms, fitness rooms (including FitLinxx), indoor pools,
water playgrounds, basketball, racquetball, squash, and wallyball courts, ice
rinks, skate parks, and birthday party & room rentals. Programs include
group fitness classes for members (membership pass options for seniors,
students, couples and families), aquatic programs, and classes and camps for
children; some centers also have pre-school programs. Summer camp programs
serve preschool and grade school age children; staff members are as least 18 years
old (most are college students or teachers), child-staff ratio is 10:1 for
preschoolers, and 10:1-15:1 for school age children. Various schools and most
of the recreation centers host summer camp programs; before & after-camp
care is available. Swim programs include private and group Learn-to-Swim
lessons (with accommodations for preschool and school-aged children from public
and private schools and day care centers, based on availability), Competitive
Swim and Dive Instruction, Aquatic Exercise (both scheduled classes and drop-in
basis), and Lifeguard and Instructor Training; with private groups that rent
pool space also offering competitive swimming, diving, synchronized swimming,
scuba diving and water polo. An Aquatic Safety Training for School-Age Children
program offers children classroom and poolside instruction in skills to survive
an aquatic emergency, perform non-swimming rescues and prevent accidents.
Adapted Aquatics, 703-324-8565, offers individuals with physical and
developmental disabilities an individualized swimming and water activity
program, designed to develop basic swim skills in a structured setting with
one-on-one support from trained volunteers; small group lessons (one to four
students), staffed by American Red Cross certified Adapted Aquatics Instructors
and trained volunteers, are also available on a flexible schedule; school
groups and group home residents can also be accommodated. Unique facilities
include an aquatic playground at the Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole at Lake Fairfax
Park in Reston; an indoor water park at Cub Run Recreation Center; an ice
skating rink at Mt Vernon Recreation Center; the Skate Park in Wakefield Park
next to Audrey Moore Recreation Center; Kidwell Farm, a working farm of the
1930s era at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon; a working grist mill at Colvin
Run in Great Falls; a restored 18th century home at Sully Historic Site in
Chantilly; a horticulture center at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria; and
Clemyjontri, a fully accessible playground in McLean, VA. The Natural Resource

Recreational facilities in Alexandria include dozens of city parks,
which collectively feature Recreation
Centers, Playgrounds,
Picnic Shelters, Tennis Courts, Basketball/Multipurpose Courts, Multi-use
Athletic Fields, Outdoor Pools, Trails, Dog Park Areas, and Flower Beds &
Garden Sites. The recreation centers collectively offer Weight Rooms, Gyms,
Meeting Rooms, Game Rooms, Arts & Crafts Rooms, Multi-Purpose Rooms,
Fitness Rooms, Dance Rooms/Studios, Ceramics/Pottery Rooms/Studios, Photography
Labs/Studios, Library/Computer Rooms/Labs, Activity Rooms, Athletic Fields,
Tennis Courts, Neighborhood "Mini" Pools, and Kitchens. Features
unique to particular centers include a Boxing Center, Locker Rooms, and
Preschool Area at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St,

Lee Center, which houses the department's
administrative office, features an Exhibit Hall with a serving kitchen, and an
Auditorium seating up to 400 that is equipped with a sound system, stage
lighting, piano, podium and microphone. The facilities can be rented on the
weekends for private functions such as meetings, receptions, banquets,
celebrations and awards programs. Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St,
703-519-3494, offers multicultural programs in music, dance, theatre, and
visual arts, and houses spaces for rehearsals, meetings, and arts focused
classes, including a grand multipurpose room with stage and a Gallery Patio.
The Alexandria
Commission for the Arts (703-838-6348), located at the Durant Center,
collaborates with the local community, markets the City's arts events and
organizations, builds education partnerships in the community, and administers
an annual grants program. All recreation centers are open weekdays until 9:00 or 10:00, some are open during the school day, others after
school only. Lee and Durant centers are available for private rentals on the
weekend, all other centers are open to the public on Sat and/or Sun during
specified hours, which vary between centers, and may also change during the
summer at certain facilities. Senior adult programs, featuring open gym
(volleyball & basketball) are offered at Mount Vernon Recreation Center,
2701 Commonwealth Ave, 703-838-4825, from 10 AM-3:30 PM M-F; at John Adams
Recreation Center, 5650 Sanger Ave, 703-838-4345 (weekdays) or 703-578-3388
(weeknights), and at MacArthur Center, 1101 Janney's Lane, 703-838-4830, from
8-10 PM MW during the school year (Sept-June). Adams Center
also houses a game room offering Table Tennis, Pocket Billiards and Table
Games. Houston & Kelly Centers offer extended teen hours (9-11 PM Fri, 6-11 PM Sat, and, for Houston, 9-11 PM M-TH in July & August.). Houston also provides extended adult hours (9-11 PM M-F). Other recreation
facilities include the City Marina, West End
Farmers' Market, and Neighborhood "Mini" Pools. The City Marina, on
the Potomac River, offers a 3-mile boat ride to Maryland or Washington D.C.,
and features 59 Boat Slips, each with a
30 amp electrical connection and water hose bib (in season); restroom
and shower facilities for overnight guests. A public access dog park is within
easy walking distance, and various parks, walking/bike trails, restaurants,
shops, and historic sites surround the facility. West End Farmers' Market, in
Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr, is open on Sunday mornings from May through
late November, and features fresh, locally grown, in-season vegetables as well
as a variety of fruits, pastries, fresh breads, gourmet cheeses and yogurts;
local artists and crafters display their wares the first Sunday of each month.
Four Neighborhood "Mini" Pools, each with a shallow water depth of
3-5 feet, operate on weekday afternoons during July & August, and
accommodate up to 45 swimmers, up through age 13, at no charge. Two large pools
(Old Town and Warwick), open on weekends and holidays late
in May, and full-time from late June through Labor Day. The 25-yard pools both
feature a diving well, a separate wading or training pool for children up to 3
1/2 feet tall, and on-site and/or adjacent picnic areas & tot playgrounds;
Admission through a daily rate, or through purchase of a season pass are both
available options. Old Town Pool, 1609 Cameron St, 703-838-4671, is open from
Noon-7 PM daily, and also offers two large, floating reptiles for play; its
training pool is handicapped accessible, with a water depth range of 1-3 feet.
Warwick Pool, 3301 Landover St,
703-838-4672, also features a bathhouse. Old Town Pool offers an Annual Doggie
Day Swim (703-519-2160) on the Tuesday after Labor Day for dogs and their
owners (age 16 & up), with a nominal admission fee (proceeds to the
Alexandria Welfare League). A variety of recreation programs for all ages are
offered, including health & fitness classes (e.g. aquatic & land
exercise), dance, sports, summer camps, arts, music, dance, martial arts, and
yoga. Chinquapin Park Recreation

be reached for additional programming information. Chinquapin Park Recreation
Center, 3210 King St, and George Mason Elementary School, 2601 Cameron Mills
Rd, host or are a jumping off point for, the city's summer camps, which serve
children from ages 3-17 with general recreation and sports camps (most programs
are for ages 6-12 or 6-13, CIT
camp serves ages 13-17). Simpson Stadium at Simpson Park,

hosts Virginia Baseball Club run baseball camps for children (half-day for ages
5-6). Mel Labat and Tennis on the Move co-sponsors tennis camps for ages 4-13.
American Inline Skating co-sponsors an Inline Skating & Skate Board Camp
for ages 6-13. Challenger Sports, 1-800-878-2167, ext. 239, offers week-long
British Soccer Camps. Before- & after-care is available with most of the
camps. British Physical Education graduates staff a 1-week UK Sports Week Camp
for ages 7-14. River Riders, l-800-326-7238, offers summer adventure camps near
Harpers Ferry, WV for ages 9-17 T-TH; lunch and
transportation to and from Chinquapin
Park Recreation
Center is provided.
Durant Center hosts Cultural Arts Camps for children ages 3-15, with ballet
camps for preschoolers through Tiny Dancers, and theater camps for ages 6-11
& 12-15 (Before and after care is available). Durant & Houston Centers
sponsor science camps for ages 5-17 (ages for specific camps vary). Houston Center also hosts Fashion Fun Camp for
ages 7-14. Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, 5750 Sanger Ave, 703-838-4829,
hosts a Spring Break Nature Camp for ages 7-10, Summer Nature Camps for ages
5-10, and Science Adventure Camps for grades K-6 (through Science Adventures,

Center hosts 7-weeks of
summer day camps for preschoolers (ages 3-5), grade school age (6-12 years) and
teens (13-17 years) with developmental delays; staff members have backgrounds
in therapeutic recreation, special education or related fields. The Volunteer
Buddy Program for ages 6-15 is available to children who would like to
participate in general recreation summer programs. Summer Playground Camps
offer free drop-in activities such as supervised games, sports, crafts, field
trips and special events from late June through Mid-August for children ages

teen programs, such as the Summer Power-Up Program, which offers age
appropriate sports, games, arts & crafts, 4-H project clubs and other
special events and programs such as " Payday Wednesdays" June
29-August 14 at George Washington Middle School, Saturday Night Hype
"Super Summer Splash Party" on June 7 from 6:30-9 PM at Old Town
Pool, 1609 Cameron St (free admission with school ID), and the monthly Saturday
Night Game Show Series at Kelly (May 30), Ramsay (June 20) and Houston (July
18) centers. Other teen summer programs include Master Chef Cooking, offered at
all neighborhood Recreation Centers, Nature Trail Renovation Series (through
Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center) to benefit Dora Kelley Nature Park, and
Summer Field trips to Kings Dominion, Virginia Beach, and Massanutten Resort
& Waterpark ($40 for admission/transport, plus spending money). The In Our
Own Back Yard program, July 6-August 14, focuses on four local destinations
around Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC.
The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities sponsors
a nutrition program, the USDA Summer Food Service Program, which will provide
qualified youth ages 18 & under with free lunches and/or snacks on weekdays
from June 29-August 21 at Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mt. Vernon,
Nannie J. Lee, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay Recreation Centers and various
playground sites throughout the City for any City youth; as well as at other
participating organizations and locations such as the Alexandria Olympic Boys
and Girls Club, Therapeutic Recreation and the Campagna Kids Summer Camp sites.
The Licensed Out of School Program offers free after school care (2:45-6 PM) for children ages 5-12 at
Ramsay (5650 Sanger Ave,

fully handicapped accessible). 83,000+ square feet Lee District RECenter also
features a Superslide, diving boards, spa, spectator seating, locker rooms,
family changing room, and an outdoor sun deck and grassed sunbathing area in
its Natatorium area, basketball & volleyball courts, electronic
scoreboards, spectator seating, boxing equipment, and a three-lane, 1/10 mile
running track in its Gym area, and a dedicated fitness studio in its Fitness
Center. Other center features include racquetball/wallyball courts, mirrored
dance/fitness rooms, multi-purpose rooms, a mezzanine, and preschool; the
surrounding 193 acre park also offers a soccer field with overlay T-Ball
fields, football fields with overlay softball fields, basketball courts, an
amphitheater, picnic areas (one sheltered), horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball
court, a playground and tot lot, lighted tennis courts, a tennis practice wall,
walking trails, and a carrousel. Mount Vernon RECenter, 2017 Belle View Blvd, 703-768-3224,
features a year-round, 200 foot by 85 foot, indoor Ice Arena, as well as picnic
areas/shelters (can be reserved). The centers offer a variety of classes for

Recreational facilities in Annandale include county owned & operated
Audrey Moore RECenter in Wakefield

handicapped accessible, 76,000 square feet, Moore RECenter, which includes curb
ramps, automatic doors, parking, an elevator, and a wheelchair accessible
unisex bathroom and dressing stalls, houses an indoor pool that features diving
boards, a Super Slide, spectator seating, an outdoor sundeck, locker rooms with
saunas and showers, racquetball/wallyball, and squash courts, a gym with
basketball hoops, and volleyball nets, a cycle studio, a dance room, a pottery
lab and kiln, an arts and crafts room, a photography lab, multi-purpose
activity rooms, a senior center, and a fitness center featuring Cybex machines
connected to the FitLinxx network, cardiovascular equipment, free-weights, and
a stretching area; and offering weekly group fitness classes. The surrounding
Wakefield Park features trails, including a Cross County Trail, outdoor
basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, baseball, softball, and soccer
fields; Wakefield Skate Park, 8100 Braddock Road, 703-321-7081, and Wakefield
Farmers' Market. Wakefield Skate Park offers private lessons, camps, and
classes, and features facilities for skateboarding, inline skating, and BMX
biking, including a Freestyle course with bank ramps, 4 foot quarter pipe,
pyramid, grind rails and a grind box; and a Competition course consisting of a
double jum-box, euro gap, bank ramp with kicker, roll-over radius, and a grind
box. Wakefield Farmers' Market, located just inside the Wakefield Park
entrance, offers a tree lined avenue of merchants with a variety of produce and
other products.

Recreational facilities in Chantilly include Sully Historic
Site, which features a restored 18th century home, and 65,000 square foot Cub
Run RECenter, 4630 Stonecroft Blvd, 703-817-9407, a county owned & operated
facility that houses a natatorium featuring zero depth entry leisure
entertainment pool with water slides (including a tiny-tot slide) and a water
playground, a 25-yard by 25-meter swimming pool with a seating capacity of 175,
a fitness center, multipurpose rooms, and a party room; and a fitness center
offering FreeMotion strength training equipment, Cybex strength training
pieces, a FitLinxx computerized network system, ProPartner software compatible
with Palm OS handheld, and BroadcastVision, a wireless entertainment system. A
variety of group fitness classes are available; the XYO (Exercise Your Options)
program includes classes such as Cardio Kick, Jump and Pump, and Step that are
free with a pass or daily admission. Cub Run also uniquely features a Nature
program with a resident naturalist that uses nearby Sully Woodlands and 1,400
foot nature trail with the naturalist as a guide. The program also offers
children's classes, family activities, summer nature camps, scout badges,
school field trips and in-depth nature study for adults. Multi-purpose rooms in
the center are used for classes in fitness and recreation such as dance, arts
and crafts, sports, martial arts, drama and photography; both nature and
birthday parties are available for booking in the party room.

facilities in Fairfax include 23 parks that collectively feature pavilions,
playground equipment, park benches, picnic areas/tables/shelters, indoor and
outdoor basketball courts (some lighted), tennis courts (some lighted),
volleyball courts, practice & game sports fields (soccer, softball, baseball,
football, Little League, multipurpose, some are turf/synthetic), trails
(walking, biking, hiking, jogging), indoor activity rooms, and undeveloped open
space. Features unique to particular centers include a natural pond and a
gazebo at Ashby Pond Conservatory Site, 9817 Ashby Rd; a small tot lot at
Daniels Run Park at Embassy Lane, Estel Rd, Heritage Lane and Tetrich Blvd; a
pavilion at Gateway Regional Park, 3333 Old Pickett Rd; a horseshoe pit at
Kutner Park 3901 Jermantown Rd; a fully accessible, barrier-free playground at
Stafford Drive Park 3300 Stafford Dr; an exercise trail and multipurpose play

Sager Trail, 10318 Sager Ave,
offers a fully accessible wooded walking path between Sager Ave and Rte 236/Main St East. While
the city does not have municipal pools, several aquatic facilities serve the
area, including Country Club Hills Swimming Pool, 3622 Old Post Rd, 703-591-6114; Fairfax Swimming Pool, 4200
Roberts Rd, Box 572, 703-691-8166; Mosby Woods Swimming Pool, 3136 Plantation
Pkwy, 703-691 9536; and George Mason University Aquatic & Fitness Center,
703-993-3939. All 3 swimming pools offer memberships, and recreational and
competitive swimming & diving; Country Club Hills and Mosby Woods also
offer swim lessons. Seasonal Mosby Woods Swimming Pool has reciprocal
arrangements for its members to use the other 2 pools when its facility is
closed. Country Club Hills Swimming Pool, in addition to the pool, features
tennis courts, The Pavilion (can be reserved for special events), The Snack
Shack, Propane Grills, lounge chairs, and green space. Fairfax Swimming Pool,
recently renovated, offers lap lanes, a dedicated diving area, a 3-foot-deep
roped play area, a separate, gated wading pool with a water feature and beach
entry, an elevated pavilion with picnic tables and ceiling fans, a water
basketball hoop, variety of seating and umbrellas on the pool deck, a
tetherball court, a small toddler play area, and men's and women's locker rooms
with private changing areas, showers, and restrooms.
Mosby Woods Swimming
Pool, also recently renovated, features a separate Baby Pool, a shallow water
section for non-swimmers, lap and/or water exercise lanes for adult use only,
and a diving well with two diving boards. George Mason
University Aquatic

and 10 neighborhood parks. The parks collectively feature park benches, picnic

athletic fields (softball, baseball, t-ball, little league, Babe Ruth baseball,

offering instructional and competitive tennis and other programs. 58-acre Runnymede Park, is a community nature park, home
to over 100 species of birds, deer, fox, and other wildlife, 4 ecosystems and
450 identified plant species. The Virginia Outdoor Fund recently provided the
park with a matching grant that allowed for trail improvements for ADA accessibility, more
parking, and picnic shelters. Year-round Herndon Community Center,
the hub of the city recreation program, features a fitness center with a
variety of equipment, racquetball courts, 25-yard indoor heated pool, spa &
sauna, locker rooms, full-size gym, and indoor & outdoor tennis courts.
Recreation programs include Aquatics, with Learn to swim classes for all ages,
aquatic exercise classes, swim teams for youth, water safety training classes,
lifeguard training, adaptive aquatics, diving lessons, parent and infant swim
lessons, private swim lessons, and special events in the pool; Arts and Crafts,
with classes for parents and toddlers, youth, adults, and seniors; Cooking
classes for all ages in a teaching kitchen; Dance, including jazz, tap, ballet,
hip-hop, and creative movement for children/youth ages 2-16, and belly dance,

attended a Youth Fitness Room Orientation and hold a Youth Fitness
Pass; youth ages 12-13
must be directly supervised by a parent/guardian. The fitness center is staffed
with a Fitness Specialist and Fitness Room Attendants. Nature programs include
classes such as Little Nature Inspector, April Showers/May Flowers, and June
Bugs for ages 4-6; National Arboretum Tour (guided driving tour) for all ages;
Reptiles Alive! Show for all ages; Pond Study Program at Runnymede Park
(for all ages, family groups, children under 16 must be accompanied by an
adult). Teen programs include Teen Discovery Camp, Urban Life Skills (ages
12-15), Youth Nights (ages 12-17, June 24-August 19 W 6 -10 PM), Teen Club (weekday afternoons, 2:30-6 PM, $15 annual membership or
daily admission fee), Teen Nights (middle school students, include DJ, game
room, and social room). Special programs include Herndon's Towne Square Singers
and Commanders Swim Team. Herndon's Towne Square Singers perform choral pieces
at a winter holiday show and a Spring show at the Elden Street Players'

Commanders Swim Team offers a Summer Commanders program (with a coach's
recommendation) for swimmers age 10 and up who have swum with the Commanders
during the winter. The Junior Champs Team (ages 15-18) is under the auspices of
the Herndon Aquatics Club; Stroke Evaluations sessions are held on Tuesdays in
July for placement on the team. Special events in Herndon includehe Herndon
Festival, Music Under the Stars, Labor Day Jazz Festival, and Nature Fest.
County owned & operated Kidwell Farm, a working farm of the 1930s era
located at Frying Pan Farm Park, also hosts events and programs for Herndon
residents.

9-hole Oak Marr Golf Course features a lighted short game practice area (76
