The District
of Columbia Parks
and Recreation (DPR) offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout the
community, spread through each of 8 wards in the city. Recreation &
Community Centers collectively feature indoor & outdoor facilities,
including baseball fields (some lighted), soccer fields, multi-purpose fields,
hockey, basketball & tennis courts (some lighted), computer labs,
multi-purpose rooms, classrooms, arts & crafts rooms, dance studios/rooms,
game rooms, conference rooms, weight rooms, fitness or exercise rooms, gyms,
kitchens or kitchenettes, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Aquatic facilities,
mainly located at the recreation & community centers, include seasonal
outdoor pools, walk to learn outdoor pools, and spray parks, and indoor pools
& aquatic facilities that are open year round; programs offered include
aqua-aerobics, swim instruction, scuba and water polo. Pool admission is free
for DC residents in 2008 through the support of Amerigroup's "DC Swims
Free Program"; non-residents can access the pools with a daily admission
rate or season pass (separate rates for children under 6, youth ages 6-17,
adults ages 18-54, and seniors age 55 & up). Other classes/programs offered
include sports, arts & crafts, dance, and fitness. Unique features of the
recreation & community centers include a skate park at Langdon Park
Community Center, a pantry at North Michigan Park Recreation Center, an
elevator at Sherwood Recreation Center, a street hockey rink at Watkins
Recreation Center, horseshoe pits, a putt-putt golf course, and a sand
volleyball court at Hillcrest Recreation Center, a football field, track and
handball court at Kenilworth-Parkside Recreation Center, a roller skating rink
at Anacostia Fitness Center, and locker rooms with showers at Southeast Tennis
& Learning Center. DC Center for Therapeutic Recreation, 3030 G St SE, 202-698-1794, houses an aquatic facility
(202-645-5708) and an Early
Childhood Development
Center: (202-645-3992).
Two other therapeutic recreation centers, and 12 senior centers, serve city
residents. Senior Services at Columbia
Heights Community Center,
1480 Girard St NW, Suite 420,
202-671-0335, offers a variety of programs and events for senior citizens,
including computer classes, book clubs, concerts, trips, and picnics. At the
other end of the age spectrum, city licensed & NAEYC accredited Early Care
& Education/Headstart programs (202-671-0372) are available for young
children at 17 locations throughout the city; fee-based AM Cooperative Play
Preschool programs serve children ages 1 1/2-5 years at 11 recreation or community
center locations, and the city licensed Out of School Time program
(202-671-0372) offers before- & after-school care and enrichment for grade
school age students at 16 public schools throughout the city. For dog owners, Shaw Dog
Park (sponsored by Mid
City Beautification & Education Association), 11th St & Rhode Island Ave NW, is currently available,
with 3 others, sponsored by various organizations, in process of being
approved.
