Recreational facilities in Charles County include several parks, which collectively feature athletic fields, tennis courts (some lighted), hiking & nature trails, fishing and boating facilities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, picnic areas, dog park areas, sports complexes, and playgrounds. Local schools also provide facilities, including outdoor tennis courts and athletic fields, during non-school hours. Recreational programs and activities include youth and adult sports, horseback riding and other equestrian activities, Special Olympics, trips/tours, swimming, gymnastics, golf, fishing, boating, hiking, and summer camps. Gilbert Run Park, 301-932-1083, features a 60 acre fresh water lake with boat ramp access which allows for fishing, pedal boating, rowboating and canoeing, and house a Nature Center which features a 150 gallon aquarium and a variety of animals. Gilbert Run Park also hosts the semi-annual Fishin' Buddies Derby, where teams of one adult and one child compete for prizes in various categories, as well as door prizes (301-932-3470 or 301-870-2778 for info). Oak Ridge Park Equestrian Area, 13675 Oaks Road in Hughesville, open daily from 8 AM to sundown (weather permitting), features a show area with two riding rings, a large judge's stand with roof and electric, bleachers, turf warm-up area, trailer parking area with water, portable toilets and additional trailer/spectator parking for large events. Oak Ridge also offers miles of equestrian trails, hosts various special events and shows sponsored by local equestrian groups who rent the facility, and, in a separate part of the park, offers athletic fields for official league use (permit only), and a field for community pick-up play. Maxwell Hall Park Equestrian Area, at 6680 Maxwell Hall Drive in Hughesville, 301-932-3470, is a membership only facility, also open daily from 8 AM to sundown (weather permitting), and features 9 miles of riding trails (including different trails for different ability levels), open fields, wooded areas, steep terrain, shoreline, beach rest locations and a trail course. White Plains Regional Park (301-638-5208), at the intersection of DeMarr Road and St. Charles Parkway, is open daily, and features a tot lot and playground, an 18-hole golf course, lighted tennis courts (first come, first served), several small picnic pavilions (first come, first served), athletic fields (soccer & lighted softball, baseball, Little League & football, all for official league use-by permit only), as well as a field available for community pick-up play. The concrete, 17,000 square foot, skate park features a multiple bowl/pool area as well as a street course that features banks, ledges, stairs, rails, hips, pyramids and quarter pipes. The park is open to skateboarders and inline skaters, provides an elevated walking path, bleachers and benches for spectators; and other amenities include a water fountain, drink vending machines, restrooms, picnic tables and a covered rest area. White Plains Golf course is an 18-hole facility that accommodates golfers of all ability levels. Friendship Farm Park offers parking for 16 trailers and a single-lane, no fee, boat ramp on Nanjemoy Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River. Other boat access points include Marshall Hall & Hatton Creek Boat Launching Facilities. Marshall Hall provides paved trailer parking for 25 boat trailers with available overflow parking, and a no fee double ramp boat launch on the shores of the Potomac River. Hatton Creek offers protected small boat access with a no fee single-lane ramp to the Wicomico River; the location allows for recreational crabbing, fishing and kayaking. Two dog park areas, located at White Plains & Turkey Hill Parks, offer secure fenced areas, numerous benches, a picnic pavilion, a message bulletin board and plastic pickup bags for dog clean up. White Plains Dog Park also provides drinking water (except during extreme winter weather). Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center, 2745 Old Washington Road in Waldorf, 301-870-7938 or 301-705-6557, provides gymnastics and dance classes ranging from beginner to advanced, and pre-competitive and competitive teams through the USA Gymnastics Jr. Olympic Program. The center also offers monthly and ongoing fitness, general interest programs, field trips, summer camp (Campnastics, ages 6-12, 9 AM-4 PM, before/after care ext. hours of 6:30 AM-6 PM, eight 1-week sessions), dance, and karate. Phase I of trail construction is complete, offering two paved trails (Indian Head & White Plains, 3 miles & 2 miles, respectively). Future work on the Indian Head Rail Trail will convert it into a 13 mile-bike trail through mature forests, natural wetlands and occasional farmland. Five Charles County community centers (4 in Waldorf, 1 in La Plata), offer summer day camp programs (ages, dates, and times vary, registration is accepted at the centers). Three satellite locations (1 in La Plata, 1 in Indian Head, 1 in Bryantown) also offer programs (301-934-9305, ext 5152 or 301-870-3388, ext 5159 for info, sites don't accept registration). 1-week sports camp programs (volleyball, soccer, basketball) are offered at Stone High School in Waldorf; the basketball camp also offers a 1-week session at Ryon Elementary in Waldorf for ages 5-8. Camp Co-Op at Gwynn Center offers a camp (9 AM-2:30 PM M-F., six 1-week sessions) for children/youth ages 5-21 who have significant cognitive delays and receive special ed services; activities include arts/crafts, games, swimming, sports, life skills & field trips. The 9 community centers, located in Waldorf, Indian Head, Nanjemoy, Newburg, and La Plata, are open weekdays (Nanjemoy is closed on Tuesdays) after school till 9 or 9:30 PM, and on Saturdays (except for Nanjemoy) from 10 AM-2 PM. Bensville Park in White Plains and Bryantown Sports Complex host sports league games (baseball, Little League, football, soccer). North Point in Waldorf (2500 Davis Rd, 301-934-7475) and Lackey High School in Indian Head (3000 Chicamuxen Rd, 301-743-2470 or 301-753-6003) each house a year-round indoor community pool, offering public recreational swimming with daily admission or memberships available; as well as swim lessons, pool rentals, water aerobics and lifeguard training. Both offer evening hours during the week and Noon-6 PM on weekends. La Plata, McDonough, & Thomas Stone High Schools house outdoor pools, summer hours are mid-June to the last week in August.

Recreation facilities in Indian Head include The Village Green and Pavilion, Indian Head Senior/Community Center, Meekins Park and Woodland Village Park. The Village Green and Pavilion features include a covered pavilion amid 9.5 acres of open space, an indoor-outdoor stage, a large multi-purpose room for community activities and private gatherings, and a kitchen for providing sit down dinners. Meekins Park and Woodland Village Park are small neighborhood recreation areas; development plans for these parks include more public shoreline access, a recreational walkway and waterway trail systems, and preserving currently vacant land for open space and recreational needs.

Recreation facilities in La Plata include 9 parks, 7 within or near the town limits, and Capital Clubhouse, a year-round sports center for ice hockey and skating, soccer, volley ball, inline hockey, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, youth basketball, softball, fitness, rock climbing, cheerleading, pom poms, and flag football. The local parks include Silver Linden Park in Clarks Run just of Clarks Run Road; Wills Memorial Park, 500 St. Mary's Ave, Tilghman Lake Park, and Clarks Run Nature Area on Clarks Run Road (all municipally run, 301-934-8421 for info), Laurel Springs Regional Park & Gilbert Run Park (301-932-1083), and Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area, 5625 Myrtle Grove Road, 301-743-5161.
