Recreational
facilities in Arlington
include nearly 50 parks, 13 of which house a community center, and local
elementary, middle, and high schools, which provide access to their facilities
during specified non-school hours. The parks and schools collectively feature
tennis, volleyball & basketball courts (some lighted), community canine
(dog exercise) areas, soccer fields, baseball & softball diamonds,
playgrounds, community gardens, swimming pools, and picnic tables/shelters.
Indoor facilities at the community centers include art studios, computer labs,
game rooms, meeting rooms, multipurpose rooms, fitness rooms, restrooms (some
handicapped accessible), drinking fountains, and pay phones. Powhatan Springs
Park features a skate
park, children's rain garden, and youth athletic field for ages 10 & under.
Three nature centers (Gulf Branch, Long
Branch, & Potomac Overlook) offer outdoor trails,
interpretive exhibits and educational programs for all ages. Five community
centers house a half-day Creative Preschoolers program, 703-228-1856 (4 of
which are co-op programs using parent helpers on a rotating basis). Six senior
centers (703-228-4744 for info)
provide programs & activities for adults age 55 & older; two of those
centers are a daily lunch site. Four community centers also provide senior
programs. The Office for Teens, 703-228-7780, coordinates teen programs and
facilities, which are offered at several community centers after school, as
well as in the evenings or on weekends. Community gardens provide full- or
half-plots, with or without water, for a yearly fee of $50 or $60 for full
plots, and $25 or $30 for half plots. Recreational & cultural programs
include arts/crafts, ceramics, mixed media, music & movement, guitar,
woodworking, gymnastics, fitness/aerobics, yoga, sports, swimming, tennis,
dance, fencing, dog obedience, martial arts, and school break camps (winter,
spring, summer). A therapeutic recreation program for individuals with
disabilities offers adapted aquatics, art, gymnastics, movement, sports and
yoga.
