The San Mateo operates and maintains parks and recreational facilities throughout the City of San Mateo. Five parks are undeveloped, several feature children's play and picnic areas, 2 feature playgrounds, and several others have more extensive facilities. Bayside/Joinville Park, between Bayside School and Joinville Pool, houses the Joinville Swim Center at C 2111 Kehoe Ave (650- 522-7460), and features ball fields, a soccer field, a children's play area, community buildings, swimming, a picnic area, restrooms, and tennis courts. Beresford Park, 2720 Alameda de las Pulgas, 650-522-7440, houses Beresford Recreation Center, which hosts a number of cultural arts and dance classes (and houses the dance office). Central Park, 50 E. 5th Ave, houses the Central Recreation Center/Central Studio, and features ball fields, a picnic area, bocce ball, community buildings, horseshoes, tennis courts, a children's play area, and restrooms. The Japanese Tea Garden is also located on its grounds, along with Bianchi Train, 650-340-1520, which makes regular trips on weekdays, weather permitting. Martin Luther King Park, 725 Monte Diablo, includes a Community Center, 650-522-7470 and Swim Center, 650-522-7465. Lakeshore Park, 1550 Marina Court, houses Lakeshore Recreation Center, 650-522-7480. Shoreview Park, 950 Ocean View, features Shoreview Recreation Center, 650-522-7500. The facilities at Trinta Park, 19th & Railroad, include a children's play area, baseball field, restrooms, and basketball court. West Hillsdale Park, 31st between Hacienda & Isabelle, offers a children's play area, tennis and basketball courts. Parkside Aquatic Park, Boathouse (650-522-7468) and Harbor Patrol (650-522-7467), located at 1097 Seal Court, has facilities for swimming and boating, and includes children's play and picnic areas, as well as a volleyball court. Harbor View Park, End of Mt. Diablo & Rochester, features children's play and picnic areas, baseball field, and picnic shelter. Bayfront Nature Area is adjacent to Ryder Park. Poplar Creek Golf Course, 1700 Coyote Point Blvd, 650-522- 4653, offers an 18-hole golf course, pro-shop, clubhouse & banquet facilities. The Senior Center, 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas Center, 650-522-7490, open weekdays from 9-5, offers various activities and services for senior citizens, including Travel/Trips, Health & Wellness Fair, Dances, Lecture Series, Luncheon Program, and a Resource Reference Guide. Seniors needing services can call Services Link at 650-522-7494. A variety of recreational programs, including sports, fitness, arts & crafts, swimming, cooking, music, drama, karate, and dance are available for all ages. Early childhood activities include Tiny Tots & PK classes-AM MW, TTH or MWF for age 3, M-TH for age 4, Parent-Child programs and Kinder Play Care (2 1/2-hour after Kindergarten class, 12:15-2:45). After school child care (Homework Club, Kids Club) are available for elementary school age children. Teen Programs/Classes/Events (650-522-7470) include Dances, Band Nights, Sports, Driver Education, Radio Workshop, Etiquette/Manners, Youth in Government Day, and Teen Explorers. Adult classes include leisure and special interest programs such as Financial, Home Repair/Improvement and Parenting Workshops, First Aid/CPR classes, Gardening programs, and Foreign Language lessons (Italian, French, Spanish). The Police Athletic League (PAL) program offers Sports, Computer, Martial Arts, Special Events, Teen Activities, and Gang Awareness Seminars, with varying ages, ranging from 5-18 years for the programs. Other sports organizations also offer sports programs for children, teens and adults.
Daly City

The Daly City Parks & Recreation Department, serving Daly City and parts of San Francisco, Colma, Brisbane, South San Francisco and Pacifica, offers a wide variety of recreational classes, as well as athletic leagues and aquatic programs for all ages. The aquatics program features 2 indoor swimming pools, both housed at local high schools. The Giammona-Westmoor Pool is open year-round and features a large therapy pool and a 10' water slide. Jefferson Pool is open during the Spring and Summer. Both pools offer lap swim, recreation swim, swimming lessons, and pool parties. Seasonal sports programs for all ages include basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Youth-oriented sports include flag football, kickball, baseball, hockey, and adults can also participate in softball and roller hockey. Specialized youth activities include the Youth Recreation Program for children ages 6-12. Each program site is staffed with at least 2 recreation specialists, and offers supervised activities such as arts & crafts, music, sports & games, and homework assistance. Teens can plan, organize and participate in activities and programs, offered every 2nd Wednesday, 6:15-7:15 PM, at the Lincoln Park Community Center, 901 Brunswick St in Daly City. Teens are also eligible for employment with the Department as lifeguards, recreational staff, park aides and camp counselors on a continuing basis. Recreational facilities in South San Francisco include about 12 parks, 6 play/tot lots, Hillside Athletic Field and Terrebay Gym & Recreation Center. The parks collectively feature Children's Play Areas, Restrooms, Picnic Tables, Group Picnic Areas, Basketball Courts, Ball Fields, Tennis Courts, and Walking Trails. Two of the parks have a concession stand and another three offer a picnic shelter, available by reservation. All of the play/tot lots features a children's play area, most offer basketball courts, and some have picnic tables. Common Greens Play Area also offers a children's play area. Hillside Athletic Field features ball fields, a soccer field and restrooms. Terrebay Gym & Recreation Center has a community building, including a fitness room (650-829-4682), along with a children's play area, and tennis & basketball courts. Paradise Valley Park houses a Boys Club. Westborough & Orange Memorial Parks each have a community building; Orange Memorial Park also features a soccer field, indoor swimming pool, sculpture garden, and bocce ball courts. Burlingame Recreation Center is the hub of the town's recreation program and hosts a number of its classes. The Burlingame (Bayside) Golf Center, 250 Anza Blvd, 650-548-2447, offers golf lessons and features hitting stalls, including 30 that are covered and 5 specifically for left-handed people, an astro-turf driving range, a natural grass short game and bunker practice area, a full-service Pro Shop, and a Mexican Grill. Fitness classes are geared to teens & adults, and include Pilates and Yoga. Sports programs include basketball, volleyball, baseball/softball, tennis and youth soccer. Ryan Park, the largest in Foster City, uniquely features a community building, which houses many of the indoor classes, and bocce ball courts. Boothbay Park alone has barbecue facilities. Foster City lagoons are open for boating (except for gas or diesel-powered craft), swimming and non-commercial fishing (with a state license). Boat Park and Ryan Park both offer boat ramps and Kayaks and seacycles can be rented through California Windsurfing at Ryan Park. The Foster City Senior Program, 650-286-2585, held in the Senior Wing of the Recreation Center, offers a variety of programs, including Senior Fitness, Yoga, Motion to Music, Exercise, Enjoying Art, American Musical Heritage, and Sewing. Classes are co-sponsored by the San Mateo Adult Education program and are offered for a minimal donation per semester. Ongoing programs include free movies every Thursday at 1 PM, free blood pressure checks the first Wednesday of every month at 10 AM, free tax preparation February-April every year, Lunch Bunch trips every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, Bridge Group every Mon. and Thurs. at 1 PM and Bingo every Tuesday at 12:30 PM.
