The San Francisco Unified School District educates 56,236 students in grades K-12, housed in 120 buildings across the city. Grade configurations are K-5 (67), K-3 (1), 4-6 (1), K-8 (7), 5-8 (2), 6-7 (1), 6-8 (15), 7-8 (1), 9-10 (3), 9-11 (1), and 9-12 (20). Creative Arts Charter School is a K-8 program. The 2 KIPP Charter Academies serve grades 5-8. 7 charter schools serve the secondary school age population, each with a distinct focus and curriculum.16,653 students (29.6%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, 19,394 students (34.5%) qualify for the EDY program, 7,980 (14.2%) are enrolled in Gifted & Talented (GATE) classes, and 5,827 (10.4%) receive special education services. The district employs 3,169 classroom teachers, 143 resource teachers, 116 counselors, 27 librarians, and 136 other certified staff. 28.2% of district certified staff has advanced degrees, and 44.7% has additional credentials. Per-pupil cost (district) is $7,720. The Child Development Centers serve 1,427 preschoolers and 3,174 school age children, and Title I/State PK programs enroll nearly 400 preschool age children. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented, and Special Needs students. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling.
