The New York City Department of Recreation's facilities and programs provide a wide variety of recreational opportunities to residents of all ages throughout the 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
Manhattan is home to New York City's premier park, Central Park, which encompasses 843 acres and covers much of central Manhattan, from 59th Street (Central Park South) to 110th Street, and from Central Park West to Fifth Avenue. The southern end of the park has several attractions for children, including the Wildlife Conservation/Zoo, The Tisch Children's Zoo and the boat pond (home to the statues of Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian Anderson. It also houses The Wollman Skating Rink, the Heckscher Ballfields, the Carousel and the Dairy (so named because school children once lined up there for fresh milk), currently the Park's information center), Sheep Meadows and Strawberry Fields (named in honor of John Lennon). The east side of the park includes The Boathouse, Belvedere Castle, the Turtle Pond, the Metropolitan Museum and the Ancient Playground (E 84th St). The northern section of the park includes East Meadow (starting around 97th Street), The Conservatory Garden, The Harlem Meer, which houses the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, Duck Island and The Lasker Rink and Pool. The west side of the park includes North Meadow Ballfields (mid-park, from 103rd Street to 97th Street), and the adjoining North Meadow Recreation Center. The Tennis Courts and the Reservoir, featuring a well-known jogging path, are nearby, as are The Delacorte Theater, Shakespeare Garden and The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater. The park contains dozens of playgrounds, including Heckscher (62nd-Mid-Park), Lauder (W. 67th), Diana Ross (W. 81st), Spector (W. 85th), Bernard Family (W. 100th, E. 108th), James Michael Levin (E. 76th), and Billy Johnson/Rustic (E. 67th). The playground on E 96th features a treehouse, and Robert Bendheim playground on E 100th was designed for special needs children.
