Bloomfield Recreation Civic

The Bloomfield Recreation Department offers a variety of year-round and seasonal programs, classes, leagues and special events for all ages. Adult programs include Bridge, Aerobics, Tennis, Softball, Volleyball, and Basketball. Children/Youth programs/classes include Art, Music, Band & Chorus (Music Federation), Baton, Dance (Tap, Ballet, Creative Movement), Tumble Tots, Drama/Acting, Mad Science, Tennis, Karate, Girls Softball, Bowling (Eagle Rock Lanes), Flag Football, Pee Wee Touch Football, Intro to Sports, Basketball, and Boys Wrestling. A number of summer recreation programs are offered, including Playgroups and Camps (Recreation Station). Programs for special needs children & youth include a Special Ed Canteen (ages 7-17), Summer Camp (ages 4-18), and Horizons (adults age 18 & up). Holiday/Special events include a Halloween Parade, 4th of July Fireworks/Show, Santa Tree Lighting, Barnum & Bailey Circus Excursion, Christmas trip to NYC including a Christmas Show, and a bus trip to Atlantic City. Recreational facilities include several parks and fields, collectively featuring Tot Lots, Softball & Baseball Diamonds, Tennis Courts (some lighted), Football & Soccer Fields, Basketball Courts (some lighted), Large and Small Game Areas, Field Houses, and Parking Lots. Brookside Park also features a Gazebo, Clark's Pond offers a passive recreational area, with pond, which is stocked with trout in early spring, Felton Field offers a Boccie Court, and Pulaski Park has Hand Ball Courts and facilities for Sledding.

Caldwell Community

The Caldwell Community Center is the site of many recreational activities for all ages, including swimming, fitness & group exercise classes, sports (basketball & volleyball), dance, tumbling/gymnastics, Kids in the kitchen (cooking), camps (summer, winter/spring breaks), acting, sign language, and babysitting training. The community center features a swimming pool, fitness center, gym, and Senior Center. Special/seasonal events, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, are held throughout the year.

The Cedar Grove Recreation Department offers a variety of recreational activities, including sports classes, leagues & clinics (softball, track & field, basketball, tennis, bocce ball, soccer), and a Theatrix for Kids workshop (creative dramatics and improvisation for children in grades 1-4, held at North End School). Facilities include the grounds of Cedar Grove High School, and a municipal pool. Pool memberships are available to residents and a limited number of non-residents related to residents who have a membership (membership includes free swim lessons and swim team participation).

Essex

Recreational facilities in Essex Fells include Egan Field, which features several soccer fields, and The Skating Pond, which offers ice skating for Borough residents each winter, and hosts The Essex Fells Fire Company's annual ice skating race in the winter and a fishing derby in April, with the pond stocked with trout. During the summer & fall, the pond is drained and wildflowers occupy the “meadow” until the pond is filled in late fall. Other recreational facilities include 2 parks (Borough Park-Trotter Tract, and Grover Cleveland Park), and The Glen. Borough Park contains 80 acres of land providing open space and water shed, and featuring a circular trail for hiking (one-mile hike from Oak Lane past the Pine brook and back). Grover Cleveland Park is about 41 acres, and features, among other things, extensive paved walking trails, tennis courts, and a picnic area. The Glen encompasses the undeveloped land east of Essex Fells School, and has trails that run from Forest Way to Hawthorne Road and also to the back of the primary school.

Glen Ridge

Recreational facilities in Glen Ridge include 9 parks, 4 schools, the town pool, and the Glen Ridge Senior-Community Center. The recreation facilities feature baseball, softball, soccer, football, field hockey and lacrosse fields, playgrounds, tennis and platform tennis courts, and a seasonal skate park. Carteret Park and Hurrell Field also each include a field house among their facilities. Glen Ridge Pool is open during the summer, and available to members and their guests. Group swim lessons are offered at various times during the season (and individual lessons during lifeguard's off-times, as individually arranged). Other facilities include the Glen Bike Path and Gazebo, 2 Paddleball Courts (not borough operated) and Freeman Gardens (maintained and operated by resident volunteers). Programs/activities include a Youth Drop-in Center after-school on weekdays (at the Senior-Community Center) that offers air hockey, fooseball, and board games, Friday Night Recreation at Ridgewood Ave. School featuring gym games (grades 3-6), and Summer Day Camp (ages 5-12), a 7-week program including swimming, arts & crafts, and trips. The Glen Ridge Athletic Association sponsors a number of youth sports programs, Glen Ridge Men's Softball League offers slow-pitch softball for men age 30 or over, and a number of Senior Citizen programs are available, including a weekly exercise class, a monthly blood pressure screening, a knitting and sewing social club, a health lecture luncheon series, weekly grocery shopping trips, a pot luck lunch club, and senior field trips. Special events include a Memorial Day Parade, Municipal Tree Lighting, Pumpkin Hunt & Egg Hunt (both for grades PK-3), and Ashenfelter 8K Race & 1 mile Ridger Romp.

The Irvington Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs sponsors concerts, festivals, and holiday events, offers recreational, sports and educational enhancement programs for children, including cheerleading, basketball, karate, arts and crafts, and homework assistance, activities for adults (aerobics, karate and basketball), and a number of programs for senior citizens, including the Older Adult Wellness Resource Center, which is operated in partnership with Irvington General Hospital. The Irvington Senior Citizen Community Center (1077 Springfield Ave, 973-399-6501) hosts many of the activities for seniors. Recreational facilities include Chris Gatling Recreation Center (285 Union Ave, 973- 399-6597, East Ward Recreation Center-Parkway Playground (62 Berkeley Terrace, 973-399-6586, 6 municipal parks and 5 playgrounds. Irvington Park, bounded by Lyons Ave, and Grove, Augusta and May Streets, is operated by Essex County.

The Livingston Recreation Department offers a variety of activities & classes for all ages throughout the year, including Community Kids' Preschool, Junior Lancers Track (grades 4-8), Summer Sports Programs (Swim Team, Youth & Adult Tennis, Sports Camps), Summer CIT Program for 8th/9th Graders, Summer Outdoor Center for 6th/7th Graders (at Heritage Middle School, M-F, AM),
Youth Programs (Kindergarten Club, Sticky Fingers, Games Galore, Book Buddies, Super Science, Readers Theater, Brain Teasers, Youth Ceramics), Preschool Programs (Caregiver/Child Classes-Playtime, Fingers & Toes, Learning Together is Fun, Time for Two, Adventures in Art; Child only classes-Get Ready 2s, Art Explorations, 4-week specialty classes, Let's Play, Traveling Caravan), and Men's Softball Leagues. Most programs are held at the Senior & Community Center (LSCC) and Monmouth Community Center (MCCC). Livingston Recreation Department also offers pool passes. Children with developmental disabilities can participate in recreational activities with the help of trained volunteers who are available to "shadow" and assist them.

Recreational facilities in Newark include 6 recreation centers and 2 aquatic centers. Recreational facilities include a community pool, three athletic fields, six tennis courts, and two play areas. Special programs/events include a summer playground program, ski program (grades 4-6, 5 weekly ski trips to Hidden Valley in Vernon, NJ), town picnic, Silver Skate Races and Sweetheart Skate (Jan & Feb, respectively, at Walker's Pond on Mountain Ave), Easter egg hunt, 4th of July fireworks, Memorial Day parade, Tree & Menorah lightings, and North Caldwell Celebration (late Jan, Feb or early Mar).

Nutley Township provides a variety of recreational programs for all ages. Youth programs include a number of sports activities, such as recreational & traveling soccer, roller hockey, basketball and softball; football, cheerleading, recreational & traveling roller hockey, wrestling, K2 hoops (basketball), recreational & traveling basketball, tennis, little league baseball, senior league baseball, golf, track, lacrosse, and petite soccer. Other classes include messy masterpieces, hula dancing, tumbling, and fun with music. The township offers summer sports clinics for youth. Adult recreation programs currently include yoga, aerobics, sports (soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball, and Latin Aerobics. Senior Citizens can take advantage of various clubs and special events, such as bingo, fitness, line dancing, walking program, Tai Chi, A.A.R.P, Old Guard, Senior Social Club, and Golden Age Club. Seasonal trips and special events are held throughout the year, including Ski Trips, Halloween Party, Fishing Contest, Holiday Concerts, Movie under the Stars, Kid’s Night Out, Christmas Basketball Tournament, Ice Shows, and a Wrestling Tournament. The New Senior Adult Social Activity Center provides a structured day program that includes transportation, social & recreational activities, and crafts. The Township also offers a summer musical concerts series, a community theatre program, Infant/Toddler CPR Training, a Fingerprinting Program (for coaches or volunteers), Senior Citizen Tax Assistance, and hosts the Essex County Clerk Program (passports, Veterans Licenses and Notary Public Services, 1st Wednesday of each month at the Recreation Department). Recreational facilities in Nutley include 9 Parks equipped with walking paths, playground equipment, bridges, bleachers and drinking fountains, 12 baseball fields, 4 soccer fields, tennis courts, and a roller hockey rink. Two of the parks allow for family or company picnics (with a permit).

Roseland Recreation

Recreational programs in Roseland are largely focused on sports leagues, including Men's Softball (age 18+), Spring Travel Baseball/Softball ages 9-16, Youth Travel Basketball (all in conjunction with Roseland Recreation Boosters), Youth Field Hockey (in conjunction with U.S. Sports Institute), Track & Field (Sponsored by West Essex Jr. Knights Track and Field Association, meets at Cedar Grove High School Track), Wrestling (West Essex Jr. Knights Wrestling Association West Essex Jr. Knights Wrestling Association), Cheerleading, Sports Camp (Shooting Stars Basketball), and sports instruction/play (Football, T-ball). Recreational facilities include the Harrison Complex behind city hall, featuring Soccer & Baseball Fields, Tennis Courts, Playground, Picnic Area, Restrooms, and a Parking Lot. The complex is fenced in. Roseland also offers 2 parks, featuring sports fields, playgrounds, winter skating, basketball courts, horse shoe pits, and shuffle board court. Noecker School provides Sports Fields (Baseball, Basketball), Playground, Restrooms (whenever school is open), and a Parking Lot. Essex County Golf Driving Range also features a Pro Shop,
Picnic Area& Restaurant, Parking Lot, and offers golf instruction. Aquatic facilities include West Caldwell's Westville & Cedar Street Pools, which include locker rooms, refreshment stands, and playgrounds, and offer pool memberships, which include swimming instruction/programs, and Caldwell Community Center's 6-lane competitive swimming pool. Caldwell Community Center also features a gym, cardiovascular fitness room, multi-purpose room, men's and women's locker rooms with shower, and a separate senior citizens recreational facility with a commercial kitchen, office and multi-meeting rooms. The community center also offers memberships to families, teens, college students and senior citizens, and programs such as swimming, fitness, dance, recreational/league basketball & volleyball. The facilities and activities at East Hanover Pool are also available to Roseland residents.

Cameron Field also houses the municipal pool, which features a regulation baseball diamond, tennis courts, children’s playground and field sports area. Recreational activities/classes for all ages include sports instruction/camps/leagues (baseball, soccer, softball, tennis), arts & crafts, dance (tap, ballet, ballroom, flamenco, jazz), martial arts (karate, tae kwon do), music (jazz, guitar), preschool, kinderenrichment, and senior fitness. Classes meet at the Baird Community Center. The South Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs also sponsors a Summer Playground Program (half-day, seven week day camp for ages 3-13) Activities include board games, sports, swimming, barbecue, art, music, tennis, talent show, Movie Day and ice cream, field trips, and treasure hunts.

Recreational programs in Verona include 7th & 8th Grade Open Gym Nights, Soccer (ages 3-7, in cooperation with the United Soccer Academy), Creative Movement, Tap Dancing (Adult), Intro to Acting (grades 3-9), Basketball (Preschool-8th grade), Nia Fitness Program. Verona has a municipal pool open during the summer to members. The department also offers mentors/buddies for special needs Verona children who want to participate in programs and sports (trained high school age volunteers, supervised by adults). Classes generally are held at the Community Center (VCC).

The West Caldwell Pool Utility operates the two municipal pools, and offers aquatic recreation activities on a seasonal basis.

The West Orange Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for all ages, including year round activities for teens (in cooperation with the Municipal Alliance, West Orange schools, and West Orange Police Department), sports instruction/leagues/teams (baseball, softball, basketball, lacrosse, golf, street hockey, flag football, volleyball, wrestling, track & field, swimming), line dancing, and chess. In addition, the department offers Senior Citizen Programs, Summer Camp Programs (at local parks, grades K-7, 9:00-4:00 M-F), Sleigh Riding in the winter, and a year-round program for Individuals with Disabilities, including information, support services, summer camp, monthly theme parties, summer pool parties and trips. Special events include Spring Fling. Recreational facilities include Ginny Duenkel Pool, which features a large main pool with a safety entrance ramp, a diving tank with a low board, a water slide, a baby pool, a snack bar with an eating deck, lounging areas and a recreation center, Katz Civic Center, which hosts a variety of recreational programs, West Orange Community House, which hosts various child care programs (school age, latch key), summer day camp, and houses a chapter of the Boys & Girls Club; Jewish Community Center (JCC), featuring services and activities for all ages, including a Health Center, aquatics, cultural arts, summer camps, and sports programs. The department operates 7 parks, collectively featuring baseball & softball fields (some lighted), multi-purpose fields, street hockey courts (some lighted) playgrounds/kiddie parks, tennis courts (some lighted), basketball courts, and walking paths. Byrne Park also features a neighborhood garden, Colgate Park offers horseshoe pits, bocce courts, a walking path, sleigh riding and is home to the Ginny Duenkel Pool, Degnan Park has a fishing dock and houses Katz Community Center, Jenkins Park has a street hockey court, Lafayette Park offers a macadam play area, and O'Connor Park features an eco-system (two tiered ecosystem including a wetlands area and a stream fed pond).
