The New York City Department of Education educates 1, 075,338 students in grades PK-12 in 1200 school buildings across the city. 10 regional districts, each containing about 120 schools, 2, 3 or 4 community school districts, and all public high schools within its geographical boundaries, serve the 5 boroughs of the city. Each Region has a Learning Support Center, which houses the instructional leadership team for the Region, as well as a full service Parent Support Office. Citywide districts cover Special Education Programs, Alternative High Schools & Programs, and Charter Schools. Early childhood programs include SuperStart Pre-Kindergarten, Universal Pre-kindergarten (UPK), Early Grade Class Size Reduction, Partners in Reading After-School Program and Summer Literacy Program. The Department of Education has added a new position, Parent Coordinator, and hired one for every school; their role is to provide information to parents about their child's school, the school system in general, address parental issues and concerns, support/encourage parental involvement in their children's education, and work with existing parent organizations. They are to be available to parents during school hours, as well as in the evenings and on weekends.
