The Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department operates 150+ recreation centers and 350+ parks (including 5 Regional Parks) throughout the Los Angeles area. Its facilities throughout the city include nearly 16,000 acres of park land, 15 swimming pools, 13 golf courses, 92 miles of hiking trails, and hundreds of basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, indoor and outdoor gyms, and picnic areas. School-aged childcare is offered at park district facilities throughout the area, along with preschool programs for children ages 3-5.

Regional Parks:

Elysian Park. Near the Civic Center. Contains picnic areas, hiking trails, Angels Point and the Memorial Grove Arboretum.

Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. 4235 Monterey Rd., 213-847-3989. Features a landscaped picnic areas, natural wilderness including hiking trails, bird sanctuary, reservoir, and scenic views of the L.A. Basin and parks of Glendale.

Hansen Dam Recreation Area. 11770 Foothill Blvd., 818-756-8190. Features an 18-hole, par 72 golf course with food service, golf professional clubhouse and free parking (off Glenoaks Boulevard in the recreational area), as well as picnic areas and a lake, children's play area, a softball field, barbecue facilities, and outdoor amphitheater. Parking is available.

Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park. 25820 Vermont Ave., 310-548-7515. Features a reflecting lake and offers overnight camping (for groups only), fishing and nature hikes, picnic area with BBQ pits, 9-acre golf course, and children's play area.

Sepulveda Dam Recreational Area. 17017 Burbank Blvd. in Encino. Features three 18-hole golf courses, and 8-acre major sports field with baseball diamonds, lighted tennis courts, an outdoor gym with basketball, volleyball, and handball courts, children's play areas, parking facilities, a 20-acre picnic area, cricket field, archery range, garden center, and bicycle and roller skating paths.

Griffith Park. Open from 6 AM-10 PM daily. Features over 4,000 acres of land, bridle (equestrian) trails, hiking paths, jogging paths, mountain roads, picnic areas, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pool, soccer fields, and playgrounds. Sherman Oaks/Castle Park. 4989 Sepulveda Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, 818-756-9459. Open from 10 AM-11 PM Sun.-Thurs., till Midnight on Fri. & Sat. Offers miniature golf, batting cages, an arcade, and party facilities (charges vary according to activity).

Orcutt Ranch. 818-346-7449. Open to public from 8 AM-5 PM daily. Features manicured gardens and towering oak trees. Available for rental from 8 AM-10 PM on the weekends and 4 PM-10 PM M-F.

Los Angeles Zoo 5333 Zoo Drive, 323-644-6400

The Los Angeles Zoo is open from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, and to 6 PM on Sat. & Sun. during July & August. Admission rates are $3.25 for children ages 2-12, $8.25 for adults, and $5.25 for senior citizens. Admission is free for members of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) or the American Zoo & Aquarium Association. Group discounts are available, as are employee discounts for companies of 50 or more. Educational Programs offered by the zoo include docent- and self-guided tours, classes for preschoolers, youth, and scout groups, as well as adult workshops, "zoo on the road" programs for schoolchildren, adults, and community groups, and curriculum materials for teachers.

Riverside County Recreation Programs

The City of Riverside Park & Recreation Department operates over 40 parks in the community, and offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages. Facilities available at the parks include fields and courts for softball/baseball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and football, swimming pools, playgrounds and picnic areas. Fairmount Park features a bandshell, golf course, picnic areas, lake for fishing, and boathouse. Hunt Park has a lighted Skateboard facility (unsupervised). Hunter Park offers a mini-train on a track with free rides the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month. Mt. Rubidoux, at 1300 feet above sea level, offers a city view and nature hikes area.

Moreno Valley Parks & Recreation City Hall, 14177 Frederick St., 413-3280

Moreno Valley's city park system has 24 parks with over 288 acres, and includes public tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course (two other golf courses, including the 27-hole Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club, which is open to the public, are located in Moreno Valley). Other facilities at the parks include softball & baseball diamonds, volleyball & basketball courts, and tot lots. Area high schools provide swimming pool facilities. A number of classes and programs are held at the Moreno Valley Recreation Center, 13671 Frederick St, and the Senior Community Center, 25075 Fir Ave. Moreno Valley is also home to the 8,000-acre Lake Perris State Park, which has boating, fishing, and camping facilities. Box Springs Mountain Park provides trails for hiking and horseback riding.

Valley-Wide Recreation & Park District: Valle Vista Community Center, 43935 Acacia Ave., 951-927-6673

Valley-Wide Recreation & Park District has facilities in and offers services to residents of San Jacinto, Hemet, Menifee, Winchester. Murrietta, and surrounding areas. The district office is located in the Regional Park, 901 W. Esplanade in San Jacinto. Facilities in Hemet include the Searl Park Community Building & Youth Sports Park, 1001 N. Buena Vista Ave., featuring a 1500 square foot multi-purpose room, three ball diamonds, one soccer field, picnic area and restroom; Valle Vista Community Center, 43935 E. Acacia Ave., 909-27-6673, a 15,000 square foot facility containing indoor basketball courts, a racquetball court, child care, youth and adult sports, instructional classes, meeting rooms, full service kitchen, activity rooms, and restroom facilities; Jackson Park at Acacia & Fairview, a park with facilities for youth and adult sports, a children’s playground and 3 ball diamonds; and Valle Vista Park, 25175 Fairview, in Valley Vista, offering a picnic shelter, play area, horseshoe pits and open turf area. The district offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages, including sports, fitness, dance, gymnastics, arts & crafts, and specialty classes such as dog obedience and drivers education. The City of San Jacinto also maintains 6 public parks.

 

 

Temecula Recreation Division 43200 Business Park Dr., 909-694-6480

The Recreation Division plans, programs, and implements classes, activities, and special events. Community facilities include two recreation centers (Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista Rd., 951-694-6410 and Temecula Community Center, 28816 Pujol St., 951-694-6469), an outdoor amphitheater, a gymnasium, two swimming pools, a senior center, the Temecula Museum (28314 Mercedes St., 951-694-6452), Imagination Workshop (Temecula Children's Museum, 42081 Main St., 951-308-6370), sports fields, and picnic shelter areas that can be reserved for parties or picnics. Both community centers have meeting rooms for classes and other activities. The Community Recreation Center also houses a heated swimming pool with diving board & water slide, indoor showers, dressing rooms and lockers. The community service department also operates two other pools, the Temecula Elementary School Pool, 41951 Moraga Rd., a heated pool with all shallow depths (ranging from 3 to 4 1/2 feet), and Chaparral High School Pool, which is open to the public during the summer. A Skate Park, located at 42659 Margarita Rd, includes a concrete skateboard facility, an official size roller hockey arena, picnic facilities, restroom/snack bar, equipment rental and parking. The park is staffed and open to the public for various sessions per day, 7 days a week. Special beginner sessions are also offered. The facility is lit for night skating and can accommodate up to 35 skaters at one time. The City of Temecula has also partnered with Skyhawks to offer summer sports camps for youths (soccer, baseball, flag football, basketball, golf, and Multi-Sport).

 

 

Coachella Valley Recreation & Parks District 45871 Clinton St., Indio CA 92201, 760-347-3484

The Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District provides recreation services to residents of La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and portions of Rancho Mirage and the unincorporated areas of Bermuda Dunes, Thermal, Mecca, Oasis, Salton Sea and Thousand Palms. The District operates the Indio Community Center, a 39,000 square foot recreational facility in the City and two public swimming pools. The Indio Parks and Recreation Commission has recently prepared a Park Master Plan that calls for numerous new parks including the expansion of Miles Ave Park and the addition of a state-of-the-art skatepark within Indio. The district offers a variety of classes for all ages, including youth & adult sports, dance, gymnastics, karate, jazzercise, yoga, and music (beginning guitar). Most classes and programs, including after-school child care, are held at the Indio, La Quinta or Palm Desert Community Centers. In Indio, children are escorted in walking groups from Kennedy, Madison and Johnson Schools to the community center. In La Quinta, transportation is provided from Truman and Adams schools. In Palm Desert, transportation is provided from Lincoln and Washington schools.

 

 

Murrieta Parks & Recreation 40600 Cal Oaks Rd., 951-304-7275

The Community Services Department (parks & recreation) provides landscape and park maintenance, recreation services and special events programming. Murrieta has 23 parks encompassing over 1,160 acres, and including amenities such as tot lots, barbecues, sports fields, some lighted (baseball, soccer & football), volleyball courts, hiking trails, walking trails, bike path, swimming pool, restrooms, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, benches & shelters, open grass areas, and mature trees. Pond Park includes a catch & release pond for fishing. A few parks are handicapped accessible (in whole or part). In addition to the parks, Murrieta's Community Services Commission offers several classes including soccer and baseball clinics, swimming, karate, dance and special interest classes such as cartooning, CPR/First Aid, and dog obedience. Other recreation programs include baseball, softball, football, swimming, and soccer youth leagues, Boys & Girls Club, and Special Olympics.

 

 

Palm Springs Parks & Recreation Dept 401 S Pavilion Way, 760-323-8265

The Palm Springs Parks & Recreation Dept offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages. Aquatics classes and activities include Water Polo (760-977-0558), Palm Spring Piranhas Swim Team (private swimming instruction & coaching, 760-318-7946), Palm Springs Aquatics (Year Round Swimming, Summer Lessons, Palm Springs Swim Center in Sunrise Plaza Complex, 760-641-9696). A number of programs meet at the Leisure Center, including a Preschool (Tiny Tot Time) class, and After-school program for K-5 (For Kids only), Winter & Spring Break camps (K-5 & 6-8), and an After-school program for Middle School students (760-323-8272, van service available from some schools). Other classes include dance, fitness, and martial arts. Youth league baseball and softball, recreational & competitive meet at 3965 E Mesquite Ave., 760-322-5014, sponsored by www.psyouthbaseball.com). Men's, Women's & Co-Ed softball leagues are available in the fall and winter seasons, 760-323-8277 for information. Desert Highland Unity Center & Park offers a multipurpose center with gym, meeting & game room, kitchen & exercise room, outside park facilities include lighted athletic field & basketball court, picnic & playground. Programs & activities here include Drill Team & Drum Squad, Cooking Class, Kids Club (Fridays, 4:30-6:00), Youth Basketball, Weight Exercise, Computer Learning & Readiness, Literacy & Tutoring. There are 8 parks throughout the community. All parks have drinking fountains, many have picnic facilities, barbecues, parking lots, play equipment, grassy and/or landscaped open space, restrooms, and public phones. Some have lighted and/or unlighted ball-fields and basketball courts, bicycle paths and tot lots. Sunrise Plaza uniquely houses a Senior Center, Jogging Course, Swimming Pool, Boys & Girls Club, Skate Park (opened Dec. 2003) and Stadium. Desert Highland Park features the community's only handicapped accessible playground. Stevens Park features a historical site & exhibit. DeMuth Park uniquely features lighted & unlighted soccer fields. Facilities available for rental include Palm Springs Pavilion and Leisure Center, both at 401 S. Pavilion Way, Palm Springs Stadium, 1901 E Baristo Rd., and Sunrise, Ruth, Hardy, Victoria, DeMuth and Frances Stevens Parks. The Parks and Recreation Dept also operates a "dog park". Special Events include Free Concerts (Fall Concert Series), Village Fest, Ballroom Dancing, Bike Weekend, Pride Festival & Parade, Veterans Day Parade, Homecoming Parade, Festival of Lights Parade, International Film Festival, The Nutcracker Ballet, Tour de Palm Springs Bike Ride, Black History Festival and Parade, Wednesday evening dances, and the Crossroads Renaissance Festival. Other facilities include Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, 1885 Golf Club Dr., 760-328-1005, which has two 18-hole golf courses; the Legend Course and the Resort Course. Tahquitz Creek also features an Island Fairway, Champions Bar & Grill, Full Pro Shop, Dawn to Dusk Hours, and an All Grass Driving Range.

Palm Desert is a member of the Coachella Parks & Recreation District and houses the Palm Desert Community Center as one of the district's facilities. The city also operates and maintains several parks, with amenities including tennis, volleyball & basketball courts, baseball fields, picnic facilities, tot lots, playgrounds, open grass areas, trails and restrooms. 2 dog parks (lighted one at Civic Center Park, with separate space for small dogs) are available to residents, Civic Center Park also features an ampitheater and skate park. Palm Desert Soccer Park, 74-735 Hovley Lane, offers 5 full size soccer fields and includes horseshoe pits & shuffleboard courts.

 

 

Perris Recreation Perris Parks & Recreation Dept. 101 N "D" St., 951-943-6603

Perris Recreation Services offer a variety of classes and programs for all ages, including fitness/aerobics (adults only), dance, tae kwon do, sports, arts & crafts, and First Aid/CPR. Toddler and preschool programs include Mom & Tots for children ages 1 1/2 to 3 years, and Discovery Time for 4 year olds. Drivers Education is offered on the weekends to teens aged 15 1/2-17 1/2. Statler Youth Center, 120 N Perris Blvd., is the location for Youth Open Play, a free supervised program on Tuesday-Saturday afternoons for ages 6-17 featuring Pool tables, board games and Nintendo. Supranos Bowling Alley in Moreno Valley hosts Youth Bowling for ages 5-14.

Lake Elsinore Recreational Classes & Activities include Arts and Crafts, Dance, Music, Preschool Music & Movement, Infant/Toddler Gymboree (Ready, Set, Grow), Gymnastics, Acting, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Tennis, Stroller Striders, Fitness for Mom, Basic Massage to use at home, Yoga of Awareness, Chi Gong, Yoga with Paul Blake, Introduction To REIKI , Tae Kwon Do, Dog Training & Obedience, Clubs* (Bridge, Coffee), Social Security help*, HICAP help*, Notary service*, Lunch Nutrition Program*, Computer Center*. *Seniors, age 50 & up. The department also offers a Tiny Tot preschool program that meets on TTH from 9-11 AM or 11:30 AM-1:30 PM (ages 3-4) or 9-11 AM, 11:30 AM-1:30 PM, and 1:45-3:45 PM MWF (ages 4-5). Kidsbreak Recreation Program, for children in grades 1st to 5th, meets MWF from 3:30-5 PM, and is a free year round supervised and organized program offering sports, games, craft, special activity days and more. S.O.A.R. (Special Opportunities for Activities and Recreation, 951- 245-0442) is a newly formed adaptive recreation program for young adults ages 16 & older with special needs. Most classes and organized activities meet at the Senior Activity Center, 420 E. Lakeshore Dr. or Lake Community Center, 310 W. Graham Ave. Lake Elsinore's parks have various combinations of facilities, including gyms, restrooms, concession stand, parking, baseball, softball, soccer & football fields, volleyball & tennis courts, horseshoe pits, sports lights, shaded structures, play equipment, drinking fountains, beaches, picnic areas & shelters, barbecues, and electrical equipment. Creekside Park, 32000 Lost Road, uniquely features pedestrian walks.

The Banning Community Services Department provides recreational programs and services for all ages through 3 of its divisions. The Recreation Division provides recreational and leisure activities for teens and adults, including youth and adult sports, instructional classes, teen programs, and special events. Facilities maintained by the division include the Banning Community Center complex, Roosevelt Williams Recreation Center, and Laura May Stewart Bowl Building. The Aquatics Division maintains the Municipal Pool Complex, 749 N. San Gorgonio Ave. and offers learn to swim classes, and aquatic special events. The pool is open to the public from the second week of June through Labor Day. The Senior Services Division offers a comprehensive program of recreational and leisure activities and senior services to the senior citizens of Banning.

 

 

Norco Parks and Recreation: Parks, Recreation & Community Services Dept., 2820 Clark Ave., 951-270-5632

The City of Norco Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services offers a variety of recreational and leisure programs, services and activities for residents of Norco and surrounding communities. Programs for children ages 4-12 include After-School Kidz Club, Off-Track Kidz Zone, and Kidz Night Out. The Department operates 12 Parks, all offering various amenities, including open park space, play areas, picnic shelters and lighted sports fields. The City also operates Ingalls Park, a large equestrian complex which includes the City's major rodeo facility, Moreno Arena, the banquet and convention facility, Nellie Weaver Hall, and a variety of other amenities. In addition to Ingalls park, the City operates a number of public riding arenas in parks throughout the City. The Community Center Complex is home to a number of recreational and sports programs, special events and classes. The Center offers a variety of facilities, including Riley Gymnasium (951-270-5606), Community Center Ball field, the Norco Children's Center, home of the Wee People Playschool Program, Norco Community Center Pool- "The Plunge" (951-270-5604), the Norco Youth Center/Scout House, and a number of meeting halls and classrooms. The City of Norco offers the Party Pardners Program for developmentally disabled adults. Program participants meet on the second and fourth Fridays each month from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Norco Senior Center, 2690 Clark Ave., for an evening of entertainment, socialization and activities.

 

 

La Quinta Parks and Recreation La Quinta Community Services Dept., 78-945 Calle Tampico, 760-777-7090

La Quinta Community Services Department provides a variety of classes for all ages, including computer, sports, dance, acting, interior design, arts & crafts, skateboarding, yoga, fly fishing, guitar, Italian, and financial planning. Classes held at the Senior Center include bridge, arts & crafts, exercise/fitness, tai chi, dog obedience, dance, CPR/First Aid, Spanish, AARP driver safety, computer. The Senior Center also hosts special events, such as sports day, monthly luncheons, dances, and a multi-generational talent show. Local facilities providing recreational opportunities include 10 neighborhood parks, a nature preserve, a trail, a sports complex, a resort & golf course, a YMCA, a Boys & Girls Club, a community park, a regional park, a national monument, and 4 schools, including 1 middle and 1 high school. Many of the facilities offer a children's play area, picnic tables/benches, and a walking/hiking path. Some include restrooms, ballfields, basketball courts, and barbecues. 2 parks feature soccer fields, 1 park and the high school offer tennis courts, and 3 facilities (Burns Park, Lake Cahuilla Regional Park and La Quinta High School) offer a swimming pool.

Desert Hot Springs provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including golf, with 5 golf courses in the greater Desert Hot Springs area, hiking/climbing in the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains, bicycling in Desert Hot Springs varied terrain, skateboarding at Sgt. Frank Hodge Park, which is specially designed for skateboarding, scenic hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, scenic tours, and fishing.

 

 

Beaumont Parks & Recreation: Beaumont Community Services Department 550 E 6th St., 951-769-8524

Beaumont Community Services Department offers a variety of recreational programs and events for families and individuals of all ages. City parks include Beaumont Sports Park at the corner of Brookside  & Beaumont Avenues, Stewart Park, between 8th & 11th and Orange & Maple Avenues , Noble Creek Regional Park, at Oak Valley Parkway between Elm Ave. & Oak View Dr., Three Rings Ranch Community Park, at Claiborne Ave. E. & Brookside Ln., Rangel Park, at 4th & B Streets,  and Mountain View Park, at Sundance Circle. Sports Park is a 20-acre park that features a track for walking or jogging and hosts organized sports and special sports events. Beaumont Plunge Pool operates during the summer for open swimming and swim lessons. An outdoor pavilion is also available to area residents. The Beaumont Civic Center is available for rentals for any occasion and features a 5,000-square-foot multi-purpose room, four meeting rooms and a full service kitchen. A Day Camp for children ages 5-13 offers before- and after-school recreation. The departments Intern Program provides job opportunities for area teens & young adults. The Department oversees community activities, including the Annual Christmas Parade, the Maze of Terror, a Fourth of July event, Concerts in the Park, a Cinco de Mayo concert, and various dinners, plays, and special events.

Calimesa Recreation: Norton Younglove Community Center 908 Park Ave., PO Box 1190, 909-795-2287

Recreational facilities in Calimesa include Calimesa Creekside Park, 950 7th Place, which features a basketball court and picnic area, and Calimesa Golf and Country Club, 1300 3rd St., a public 18-hole golf course and clubhouse. Many classes and programs for all ages meet at the Norton Younglove Senior & Multipurpose Center, including computer, fitness, arts & crafts, and dance. Various health, and nutrition programs for senior citizens and (in some cases) their families are offered at or through the center, as well as an Alzheimer's support group.

 

 

Wildomar Recreation

Wildomar is an unincorporated area and has no city recreation program. Recreational facilities and programs in Wildomar include Arena Sports, 22482 Walnut Dr., 951-245-4625, Wildomar Little League, 951-678-1941, and Wildomar Youth Soccer, PO Box 289, 951-245-5811 (hotline). Residents can also participate in recreation programs in neighboring Lake Elsinore.

Westlake Village offers recreation classes and programs under contract with Conejo Recreation & Park District, 1175 Hendrix Ave. in Thousand Oaks, 805-495-2163. Senior Citizens can participate in classes and programs including Yoga, Mah Jongg, Rummy Tile, Bridge, Self-Defense, Fitness, Interior Decorating, Intro to the Internet, which meet at the Westlake Village Civic Center Community Room, 31200 Oak Crest Drive. The White Oak After-school Enrichment Program, jointly sponsored by the City of Westlake Village, Conejo Recreation & Park District, and White Oak PFC, offers sports, art, drama, journalism & dance classes to elementary school age children. Preschoolers ages 3-5 are offered Tot Soccer, T-Ball, and Sports of all Kinds, which meet at Berneice Bennett Park, located at 31800 Village Center Rd. The park features a pavilion, picnic tables, children's playground, walking path, volleyball and lighted basketball courts, restrooms/drinking fountains, and parking. The city also maintains 4 other parks: Canyon Oaks, corner of Hedgewall & Landino, Foxfield, on Foxfield Dr. next to Fire Station #144, Three Springs, 3000 Three Springs Dr., and Russell Ranch, 30798 Russell Ranch Rd. All parks offer a children's playground or play area, picnic tables or area, most have drinking fountains, and some include parking and a pavilion. Foxfield features a half-court basketball area and Three Springs offers a walking/fitness path and basketball courts. Russell Ranch includes baseball/soccer fields and is home to Buttercup Preschool.
