The Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department operates 150+ recreation centers and 350+ parks (including 5 Regional Parks) throughout the Los Angeles area. Its facilities throughout the city include nearly 16,000 acres of park land, 15 swimming pools, 13 golf courses, 92 miles of hiking trails, and hundreds of basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, indoor and outdoor gyms, and picnic areas. School-aged childcare is offered at park district facilities throughout the area, along with preschool programs for children ages 3-5.

Regional Parks:

Elysian Park. Near the Civic Center. Contains picnic areas, hiking trails, Angels Point and the Memorial Grove Arboretum.

Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. 4235 Monterey Rd., 213-847-3989. Features a landscaped picnic areas, natural wilderness including hiking trails, bird sanctuary, reservoir, and scenic views of the L.A. Basin and parks of Glendale.

Hansen Dam Recreation Area. 11770 Foothill Blvd., 818-756-8190. Features an 18-hole, par 72 golf course with food service, golf professional clubhouse and free parking (off Glenoaks Boulevard in the recreational area), as well as picnic areas and a lake, children's play area, a softball field, barbecue facilities, and outdoor amphitheater. Parking is available.

Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park. 25820 Vermont Ave., 310-548-7515. Features a reflecting lake and offers overnight camping (for groups only), fishing and nature hikes, picnic area with BBQ pits, 9-acre golf course, and children's play area.

Sepulveda Dam Recreational Area. 17017 Burbank Blvd. in Encino. Features three 18-hole golf courses, and 8-acre major sports field with baseball diamonds, lighted tennis courts, an outdoor gym with basketball, volleyball, and handball courts, children's play areas, parking facilities, a 20-acre picnic area, cricket field, archery range, garden center, and bicycle and roller skating paths.

Griffith Park. Open from 6 AM-10 PM daily. Features over 4,000 acres of land, bridle (equestrian) trails, hiking paths, jogging paths, mountain roads, picnic areas, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pool, soccer fields, and playgrounds. Sherman Oaks/Castle Park. 4989 Sepulveda Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, 818-756-9459. Open from 10 AM-11 PM Sun.-Thurs., till Midnight on Fri. & Sat. Offers miniature golf, batting cages, an arcade, and party facilities (charges vary according to activity).

Orcutt Ranch. 818-346-7449. Open to public from 8 AM-5 PM daily. Features manicured gardens and towering oak trees. Available for rental from 8 AM-10 PM on the weekends and 4 PM-10 PM M-F.

Los Angeles Zoo 5333 Zoo Drive, 323-644-6400

The Los Angeles Zoo is open from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, and to 6 PM on Sat. & Sun. during July & August. Admission rates are $3.25 for children ages 2-12, $8.25 for adults, and $5.25 for senior citizens. Admission is free for members of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) or the American Zoo & Aquarium Association. Group discounts are available, as are employee discounts for companies of 50 or more. Educational Programs offered by the zoo include docent- and self-guided tours, classes for preschoolers, youth, and scout groups, as well as adult workshops, "zoo on the road" programs for schoolchildren, adults, and community groups, and curriculum materials for teachers.

A variety of recreation classes are available to Anaheim residents. Both adults and children can participate in arts & crafts, dance, sports, swimming, special interest, and fitness* classes. Gymnastics classes are offered for children. Swimming classes are held at Loara High School pool, 1765 W. Cerritos Ave., 714-635-3215 & Pearson Park pool, 400 N. Harbor Blvd., 714-774-6230 (Phone for each during summer session only). Pearson Park also offers public swim hours. A preschool program is offered during the school year and in the summer. Playground programs for school-aged children (ages 5-12, 2-5 PM T/TH) operate at Brookhurst (765-3377), Canyon Rim (714-280-9201), Eucalyptus (714-921-8379), John Marshall & Pioneer (714-765-3654), Rio Vista (714-666-2421), and Toyon (714-281-9609) Parks during the summer. The Community Services Department provides a wide range of programs to the community, including parks and recreation programs. Facilities include the Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton Museum, Muckenthaler Cultural Center, Fullerton Tennis Center, Senior Multi-Service Center, Maple Senior Center, Valencia & Garnet Community Centers, Hillcrest Terrace (available for rental), Independence Park, and a number of playgrounds, public parks and trails. The Division of Community Services operates the Recreation program for the City of Orange. Classes and activities for include Swimming, Dance, Ice Skating, Tennis, Golf, Arts & Crafts, Cooking, Music, Surfing (Ages 10 & up), Scuba Diving (Ages 12 & up), and Magic (Parent & Child, Ages 8 & up), Bowling and Roller Skating. One-day C.P.R. & First Aid workshops (8 hours), leading to certification, are offered periodically. Neighborhood Parks offer a variety of facilities, including baseball diamonds, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and handball/racquetball courts, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Santa Ana Parks, Recreation & Community Services Dept. builds, maintains, manages, and programs for 17 recreation buildings, 5 swimming pools, 39 parks, and 11 bicycle trails within the city. Cooperative arrangements exist with schools, churches, business groups, and neighborhood associations in the community.

The City of Garden Grove's Community Services Department provides leisure programs and activities including sports, aquatics, special interest classes, camps, and special events at various places throughout the community. The department also runs the H. Louis Lake Senior Citizens Center (714-741-5253), which offers leisure, education, and health-related programs to senior citizens in the community. The department also manages and operates the Community Meeting Center and Courtyard Center Complex (714-741-5262), with facilities for social, civic, and business functions available for rental.

The Recreation Services Department offers classes and activities for all ages, including sports, aquatics, arts & crafts, special interests, and fitness. Most programs are held at the Neighborhood Community Center (NCC), 1845 Park Ave., 714-327-7525, Downtown Recreation Center (DRC), 1860 Anaheim Ave., 714-327-7560, or Balearic Community Center, 1975 Balearic Dr., 714-754-5175.A preschool, for ages 3-5, is located at the Balearic Community Center. Day camp and playground recreation programs are available during the summer for schoolchildren ages 6-12/6-13. The Senior Center, 695 W 19th St, is the location for a number of activities for Senior Citizens. Golfers can take advantage of the facilities at C.M Golf & Country Club, 1701 Golf Course Dr., while tennis enthusiasts can enjoy C.M. Tennis Club, 880 Junipero. Some 30 neighborhood parks serve the city of Costa Mesa. Many have one or more picnic tables, barbecues, and drinking fountains. Some have restroom facilities and/or a playground. A few have facilities for basketball, handball, volleyball and softball. TeWinkle Park, 970 Arlington, features 12 tennis courts, an ampitheater, a gazebo, a softball field, and a handball court, among other facilities. Wimbledon Park's facilities include 4 exercise areas.

The Saddleback Valley Unified School District's Department of Recreation & Community Services offers year-round programs to a ninety-five square mile area in South Orange County, including the communities of Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo and Lake Forest. These services include programs in the areas of childcare and pre-school, after school drop-in Kids Factory, after school sports, youth and adult social, youth and adult sports, tennis, aquatics, animals and special events. Facilities in the city of Mission Viejo include the Norman P. Murray Community & Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way, 949-470-3062, the Montanoso Recreation & Fitness Center, 25800 Montanoso Drive, 949-380-2540, and Marguerite Tennis Center, 23840 Marguerite Parkway, 949-855-6854. The Murray Center offers classes and activities for seniors as well as intergenerational programs. The Montanoso facility includes a variety of fitness classes and equipment, tennis & basketball courts and a swimming pool for lap & recreational swimming. The city's 30 plus parks, 3 of which are undeveloped, have a variety of amenities including tot lot playgrounds, school-age playgrounds, picnic areas & barbecues, softball fields, lighted & unlighted baseball fields, lighted & unlighted soccer/football fields, basketball & sand volleyball courts, walking trails, and restrooms. Facilities in Aliso Viejo include Iglesias Park, which sponsors Kid's Town, a half-day summer drop-in recreation program for school-aged children, and 20 plus neighborhood parks, with a variety of equipment and facilities, including tot lots, walking trails, basketball courts, sports fields and picnic tables/areas. Lake Forest has 20 parks, also featuring a skate park, playgrounds, walking trails, basketball courts, sports fields, lighted & unlighted tennis courts, lighted & unlighted baseball fields, lighted & unlighted soccer/football fields and picnic tables/areas. Other recreational facilities include a Community Center, Lake Forest Golf & Practice Center, and Whiting Ranch Regional Park.

 

 

Parks and Recreation Walter D. Ehlers Community Recreation Center, 8150 Knott Ave., 714-236-3860

The City of Buena Park Recreation, Parks & Community Services Department offers a wide variety of recreation, sports and cultural activities, programs, services and events for all ages. It maintains and develops all public parks & facilities as well as the Walter D. Ehlers Community Recreation Center, the Department's Administrative Offices. Many of the classes and programs are held at the Recreation Center, which also houses the Senior Center. All 10 of the city's parks have a children's play area, and all except Lindbergh Mini Park have restroom facilities. Most of the parks have picnic areas/barbecue. Some parks have basketball and/or volleyball courts. Five of the parks have community buildings for indoor activities, three have handball/racquetball courts, two have swimming pools, one has a wading pool, and one has a skate park. The Recreation Department also has a community garden program, with small, medium, and large plots available (annual prices of $30, $45, & $60, respectively). During the summer, the Recreation Department has a free recreation program every weekday afternoon from Noon to 4 PM for school-aged children ages 6-12.

The Westminster Community Services & Recreation Department maintains 24 parks with a range of amenities, including picnic areas, lighted & unlighted ball fields, basketball courts, and playground equipment. Liberty Park, 13900 Monroe St., features Westminster’s first skateboard park, designed as an “entry level” park to meet the needs of the beginner. Westminster Civic Center features the All American Rose Garden, and a free Rose Pruning Program is offered there in January. A variety of classes, programs and special events are offered for all ages, including youth sports, adult softball, recreational & instructional swimming, after-school/break/summer recreation for elementary school-age children (3 city park locations), after-school enrichment/recreation for middle school students, and Project Shue, an after-school intergenerational program pairing senior citizens with "at-risk" primary school-age children (grades 1-3). The Family Resource Center, 8102 Westminster Blvd., Suite E, provides health & social services, parent education, job training, recreation classes, gang intervention programs, and trips. The Senior Center offers a variety of classes, including fitness, crafts, computer, and driving, nutrition programs & services, tours & trips, legal help, income tax assistance, clubs & groups, and special events.

 

 

City of Newport Beach Recreation Services, 3300 Newport Blvd., 949-644-3151

The Newport Beach Parks and Recreation Department offer a variety of classes, programs, and special events for all ages, including youth and adult sports leagues, and holiday and summer camps. The department maintains a number of community centers with varying amenities. Balboa Community Center Balboa Blvd., between 18th and 16th Streets, features a small meeting room, dance floor, and kitchen. Bonita Creek Community Center, University Drive and LaVida, features 2 softball fields, 1 multi-use field, 1 outdoor basketball court (half court), playground, picnic tables, water fountains, restrooms,  and a Community Center Building with a meeting room. Carroll Beek Community Center, Agate Avenue East of Bayfront, has a multi-purpose room, 7 tables and 60 stacking chairs, and a small kitchen with a refrigerator. Cliff Drive Community Center, Cliff & Riverside Drives, offers 2 barbeques, 7 benches, 3 water fountains, 2 play structures, and a basketball court (half court). Community Youth Center (CYC), Iris Ave. & 5th St., features a small kitchen, dance room and game room (not available for private rentals), small playground, and restroom facilities.

Mariners VJC Center, Dover Dr. & Irvine Ave., offers 3 barbecues,  6 picnic tables,  play area, 2 softball fields, 1 basketball court (half-court), 2 racquetball courts, 2 tennis courts, restrooms, and water fountains. The Vincent Jorgensen Community Center has a small kitchen and a multi-purpose room that will accommodate up to 80 persons. West Newport Community Center, West 15th St., between Monrovia and Placentia, contains 6 Meeting rooms, dance room, gym, and playground. The OASIS Senior Center provides a wide spectrum of social, educational, recreational and cultural services. For elementary school-aged children, KidsScene, an After-school Recreation for grades 1-6, meets at West Newport Community Center, Mariners Park, and Community Youth Center at Grant Howald Park. For Junior High students (grades 7-8), Ensign X-perience is a drop-in after-school program at Ensign Middle School.

Laguna Niguel Parks & Recreation Department provides a variety of classes and activities for all ages, including sports, aquatics, dog training, arts & crafts, music and yoga. The department also offers periodic excursions & special events. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages. The department maintains a community center, an activity center, a family & youth center, and a senior center. Clifton C. Miller Community Center houses the department's administrative offices and offers meeting space for large gatherings of up to 200, as well as a kitchen. Tustin Area Senior Center, 200 South "C" St., features a kitchen, meeting space for large gatherings of up to 200, and 3 classrooms. All facilities except for Tustin Family & Youth Center are available for rental. The department offers summer camp programs for preschool/Kindergarten, elementary, middle & high school age children & youth. Senior citizens can volunteer as helpers with the preschool/Kindergarten "Little Folks" camp, giving an intergenerational component to that program. Sports programs and leagues are offered for both children and adults, both through the Recreation Department and independent sports organizations such as Little League and AYSO. Recreation Services oversees the various classes and activities provided for the public through the Community Services Department.  Classes and programs include Youth & Adult Classes, Special Events, Youth & Adult Sports, Day & Weekend Trips, and an After School Program. The City's facilities consist of twenty public parks (6 mini parks, 9 neighborhood parks, and 5 community parks), offering amenities such as sports fields, tennis courts, and, scheduled to open in April of 2002, a skate park, as well as green areas, picnic tables, barbecues and playgrounds. Facilities located within the parks include the Depot Theatre, the Children's Museum, the Boys & Girls Club, the Scout Hut, the Girls Activity Building and the Tennis Center.  Additional facilities located outside the parks are the Veterans Memorial Building, the Club House and the Community Center.  These facilities are open for both organized City programs and classes, as well as for rent to the public for meetings, parties and other special events.

The City of Fountain Valley's Community Services Division provides programs, classes and special events for all ages. The Recreation Center offers sports programs and other activities, including aerobics classes for adults, gymnastics and tumbling for preschoolers and older children, and dance classes, including tap, ballet, line and twirl dancing. Center facilities include a gym, indoor and outdoor racquetball/handball courts, volleyball courts, social hall, play equipment area, softball fields, baseball fields and lighted tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. A free Concerts in the Park series is held every Thursday evening in July. The Community Center at 10200 Slater Ave. also offers classes in dance, karate, yoga and senior aerobics. 17 Parks throughout the city offer various amenities, including basketball and tennis courts, and playgrounds. Programs include AVCA Youth Commission for Teens, dance classes, CPR training, Summer Youth Drop-In park programs, youth sport camps, tennis lessons, T'ai Chi, dog obedience, adult and youth golf lessons, and yoga. Most of the parks include Tot Lots (some shaded), Restrooms or Portable Toilets, Drinking Fountains, Picnic Tables & Benches (some shaded), and Parking Lots, many have Barbecues and Walking and/or Hiking Trails (some are lighted). La Palma and Cypress recreation departments jointly sponsor a Teen Lounge program, at Cypress-Arnold Park, 8611 Watson Street in Cypress, which is open after-school MWF, and offers a variety of activities including basketball, hockey, flag football, tutoring, and movies. Most programs and classes are held at La Palma Community Center. A fitness program for children, "fit n fun", meets after-school till 3:45 at Los Coyotes (MWF), Miller (MTTH), and Luther (TWTH) Elementary Schools. Senior citizens can take advantage of programs and services such as transportation referral and meals on wheels. Seniors club is open to individuals age 50 & up. Sunrise Assisted Living of La Palma, 5321 La Palma Avenue, hosts a Family & Caregivers Alzheimers Support Group.

Los Alamitos Recreation & Community Services Department offers a number of classes & programs, including Sports (Youth & Adult), Aquatics (Group/Semi-Private/Private Swim Lessons, Recreational Swim, Lap Swim, Competitive Swim, Youth Water Polo), Ice Skating, Arts & Crafts, Cooking, Dance & Movement, Fitness (Yoga, Martial Arts), Music, Cheerleading, Dog Obedience, CPR, and Tutoring. A preschool for children ages 3-5 meets on MWF or TTH mornings, from 9AM-Noon, with sessions 3 months long. Other hour-long preschool classes focus on science, music, arts & crafts, and math. Services and programs for senior citizens include Seniors Club (age 50 & up) and Senior Services, age 60 & up (Meals, Medicare Assistance, Health Checks, such as Blood Pressure Screening, Tax Assistance). A number of trips and excursions are offered. Scholarship assistance is available for class fees, based on financial need. Most classes and programs meet at the Community Center. Sanderson Ave. in Anaheim (horseback riding), Westminster Ice Palace, 13071 Springdale in Westminster (Ice Skating/Hockey). 1-day workshops are offered on topics such as Real Estate Investment, Barbecuing Tips & Techniques, Babysitting Training, First Aid, and Manners for Kids. Kids' Night Out offers recreational programs for children on occasional evenings to allow parents a night out (or in, according to their preferences). Free supervised after-school playground recreation programs for children ages 5-14 meet MW at Lewis Park, 3660 Kempton, MWF at Little Cottonwood Park, 4000 Fahrquar and TTH at Labourdette Park, 4401 Howard.

Other facilities include Stansbury Park, 3711 Toland, Roberts Park, 10911 Oak St., Soroptimist Park, 10822 Pine St., Sterns Park, 3871 Farquhar, and Oak Site, 10821 Oak St. Roberts, Soroptimist and Sterns Parks feature a children's play area. Stansbury Park offers play equipment, and a grass area. Little Cottonwood, Laurel and Lewis Park include facilities for sports, picnics, and barbecues and feature playgrounds/equipment, restrooms, grass areas and drinking fountains. Labourdette Park includes a Picnic Shelter, Barbecue, Play Equipment and Drinking Fountain. Oak Site has facilities for sports, including a lighted softball field, 2 lighted soccer fields, track, and lighted volleyball and basketball courts.
