The Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department operates 150+ recreation centers and 350+ parks (including 5 Regional Parks) throughout the Los Angeles area. Its facilities throughout the city include nearly 16,000 acres of park land, 15 swimming pools, 13 golf courses, 92 miles of hiking trails, and hundreds of basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, indoor and outdoor gyms, and picnic areas. School-aged childcare is offered at park district facilities throughout the area, along with preschool programs for children ages 3-5.

Regional Parks:

Elysian Park. Near the Civic Center. Contains picnic areas, hiking trails, Angels Point and the Memorial Grove Arboretum.

Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. 4235 Monterey Rd., 213-847-3989. Features a landscaped picnic areas, natural wilderness including hiking trails, bird sanctuary, reservoir, and scenic views of the L.A. Basin and parks of Glendale.

Hansen Dam Recreation Area. 11770 Foothill Blvd., 818-756-8190. Features an 18-hole, par 72 golf course with food service, golf professional clubhouse and free parking (off Glenoaks Boulevard in the recreational area), as well as picnic areas and a lake, children's play area, a softball field, barbecue facilities, and outdoor amphitheater. Parking is available.

Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park. 25820 Vermont Ave., 310-548-7515. Features a reflecting lake and offers overnight camping (for groups only), fishing and nature hikes, picnic area with BBQ pits, 9-acre golf course, and children's play area.

Sepulveda Dam Recreational Area. 17017 Burbank Blvd. in Encino. Features three 18-hole golf courses, and 8-acre major sports field with baseball diamonds, lighted tennis courts, an outdoor gym with basketball, volleyball, and handball courts, children's play areas, parking facilities, a 20-acre picnic area, cricket field, archery range, garden center, and bicycle and roller skating paths.

Griffith Park. Open from 6 AM-10 PM daily. Features over 4,000 acres of land, bridle (equestrian) trails, hiking paths, jogging paths, mountain roads, picnic areas, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pool, soccer fields, and playgrounds. Sherman Oaks/Castle Park. 4989 Sepulveda Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, 818-756-9459. Open from 10 AM-11 PM Sun.-Thurs., till Midnight on Fri. & Sat. Offers miniature golf, batting cages, an arcade, and party facilities (charges vary according to activity).

Orcutt Ranch. 818-346-7449. Open to public from 8 AM-5 PM daily. Features manicured gardens and towering oak trees. Available for rental from 8 AM-10 PM on the weekends and 4 PM-10 PM M-F.

Los Angeles Zoo 5333 Zoo Drive, 323-644-6400

The Los Angeles Zoo is open from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, and to 6 PM on Sat. & Sun. during July & August. Admission rates are $3.25 for children ages 2-12, $8.25 for adults, and $5.25 for senior citizens. Admission is free for members of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) or the American Zoo & Aquarium Association. Group discounts are available, as are employee discounts for companies of 50 or more. Educational Programs offered by the zoo include docent- and self-guided tours, classes for preschoolers, youth, and scout groups, as well as adult workshops, "zoo on the road" programs for schoolchildren, adults, and community groups, and curriculum materials for teachers.

Beverly Hills

The City of Beverly Hills operates a Parks and Recreation program (Admin. Office: 455 N. Rexford Dr., 310-285-2537). A variety of classes and activities are available for all age groups. Glendale offers 32 city parks and nearly 4,800 acres of publicly owned open space. In addition to parks, other City maintained facilities and recreational activities are available to the public, including the Adult Recreation Center, Sparr Heights Senior Center, Swimming Pools at Glendale & Hoover High Schools, School Canyon Golf & Tennis Complex, and the Civics Auditorium for special events.

The city operates nearly 75 parks, whose facilities include playgrounds, courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, and handball, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, marinas, swimming pools, picnic areas, roller skating/hockey rinks, beaches, golf courses, community centers, tot lots, horse trail, nature trails, community garden, and an RV Park (Golden Shore). For senior citizens, Long Beach Senior Center (1150 E. 4th. Malibu Parks and Recreation

This is the main facility for recreational activities in Malibu. The park houses Malibu Little League and AYSO Soccer, and features two baseball diamonds, soccer field, open grass area, and trail access to the beach. The Michael Landon Community center features an activity room, meeting room, and small kitchen, available to rent for weddings, parties, or meetings.

The Equestrian Center features two riding rings, a picnic area and restrooms. This facility is permitted for horse shows and open to the public for practice and pleasure riding.

A 524-acre natural area in West Malibu that is the largest single piece of natural open space within the city boundaries. The park features many different plant communities and hiking trails, as well as a small Nature Study Center with educational displays, live animals and a large mural. Programs include School Field Trips, Full Moon Hikes, Natural History classes, Artist days, and special events.

The Parks & Recreation Division offers a variety of city-wide classes & programs, including swimming, tennis, sports and summer day camps. Adaptive recreation classes & programs serve individuals with special needs. The division operates a system of neighborhood parks to provide recreational activities for the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the parks. Year round activities include organized physical fitness, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, flag football, arts, crafts, table games, tutoring, swimming, cultural enrichment and field trips. All parks have holiday programs during the major holiday seasons. The park staff also works closely with neighborhood associations and groups to organize family oriented activities such as picnics, fund-raisers and special events.

Santa Monica Parks and Recreation

Santa Monica operates 7 supervised park programs, 18 neighborhood parks, 2 swimming pools, and 8 elementary school playgrounds. The neighborhood parks offer a variety of facilities, including tot lots, baseball & soccer fields, basketball, tennis, & volleyball courts, and picnic areas. Some parks provide off-street parking and restrooms. A variety of classes and activities including sports, arts and crafts, and special interests, are offered for all ages.

ASAP Program: ASAP (After-School Activities Program) for middle school students - offering a variety of after-school activities such as team sports, dance, clubs, contests, specialty classes, and trips. CREST Program

CREST (Child care, Recreation, Enrichment, Sports, Together): a before-and-after-school program for elementary school children. CREST is jointly funded and administered by the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica-Malibu School District. Parents can choose from several options. The child-care option allows families to choose full-time, part-time or occasional use care. The sports league option is for children in K-2nd grade to learn basic skills and rules of seasonal sports, and children in 3rd-5th grade to play seasonal team sports. Another CREST option is Playground Access. This option gives children in 1st-5th grade time after school to socialize with friends and play with supervision. CREST is operated at Edison, Franklin, Grant, McKinley, Muir, Rogers, Roosevelt, and SMASH Elementary Schools. CREST options are open to any student enrolled in a Santa Monica elementary school within the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD). The Sports and Playground Access options are also open to children who do not attend elementary school in SMMUSD but live in Santa Monica. Scholarships are available for qualifying families. The City of Torrance maintains 22 parks offering a variety of features, including playgrounds, sports fields, tennis, basketball, and sand volleyball courts, golf course (Sea-Aire), picnic areas, meeting rooms, exercise course, jogging trails, Senior Center and Teen Center (McMaster Park) and restrooms. Tennis Courts and a Sports Complex are being developed for Wilson Park. A variety of classes and activities are offered, including Art, Music, Dance, Swimming, and Sports for all ages, Fitness for adults and Gymnastics for children. Special Interest classes include Photography (all ages), American Sign Language, and Madrona Marsh Science. A variety of computer classes are offered. Family Fun classes are available for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Free after-school programs for school-aged children operate from 3:30-5:30 M-F at Delthorne, El Retiro, Hickory, La Romerio, McMaster, Paradise, Pueblo, Sur La Brea, and Walteria parks. The City of Palmdale maintains and operates 37 parks, playgrounds, natural resource areas and special use facilities in the community, such as the Palmdale Senior Center and Larry Chimbole Cultural Center. A variety of classes, programs, and special events are available for all ages. The parks & recreation department offers a preschool for ages 3-5 and after-school child care/recreation programs in area grade schools for grades K-5 and K-6. The Palmdale Fall Festival, an annual city event during the second week of October, features food, arts and crafts, fine arts and headliner entertainment.

The Community Services Department provides a variety of recreation programs and classes for all ages, and maintains 24 parks in the community. An after-school recreation program serves school-aged children ages 8-14, located at Yorba Elementary School Recreation Center, 250 W La Verne Ave, 909-397-4684. Free drop-in after-school recreation programs also are held at Westmont, Martin Luther King Jr., Phillips Ranch, Washington, Philadelphia, Garfield, San Jose and Kellogg Parks. Almost all parks have play equipment and picnic areas/barbecues, most have restrooms, 12 have parking areas, 6 have community center facilities, 8 have baseball fields, 7 have soccer fields and 5 have tennis courts. Ganesha Park has a swimming pool and picnic pavilion, both of which are available for rental. Washington Park also has a swimming pool complex. Academic Tutoring is available at Ganesha Park Community & Learning Center, 1575 N White Ave., 909-620-2303, through the nonprofit organization Building Generations. La Casita Teen Center, 499# Arrow Hwy, 909-620-2302, is open Monday-Saturday afternoons.

The City of Lancaster Parks, Recreation & Arts Department operates and maintains 8 parks, including Eastside Park, which features a swimming pool, and Lancaster City Park, which has the "Big 8" Softball Complex. Other recreational and cultural facilities include the Western Hotel Museum, Lancaster Performing Arts Center, Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery, Prime Desert Woodland Preserve, Lancaster Municipal Stadium, Lancaster National Soccer Center and Lancaster Golf Center. A variety of classes, programs, and special events are offered for all ages.

The Parks and Recreation Services Division operates and maintains the El Monte Community Center and 9 parks, including the Santa Fe Trail Park (which has Historical Landmark status). Five of the parks have facilities primarily for outdoor recreation, including playground equipment, picnic shelters & tables, basketball courts and baseball diamonds. Three parks have indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, including meeting rooms, kitchens, auditoriums, gyms, basketball & volleyball courts, baseball diamonds, picnic areas and wading pools. All parks have restroom facilities. Sports programs are offered for all ages, with youth programs located at selected elementary schools in the area. Aquatics facilities include an indoor pool, therapy pool, outdoor pool, and water slide. Public recreational swim hours are available, and swim lessons are offered for all ages.

The City of Inglewood Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department operates and maintains 12 parks and recreation centers, including a Senior Citizens' Center. Facilities for sports & fitness programs, including baseball, soccer, football, tennis, racquetball, weightlifting, and swimming/wading, are available. Most of the parks have playground equipment and restroom facilities. A variety of classes and programs are offered for all ages. Classes and programs specifically for children and youths include a preschool, after-school fun club, middle school dances, mobile and "off-track" recreation programs.

The Community Services Department operates and maintains 12 parks in the city of Downey. The Community Services Department offers a variety of recreational programs and classes for all ages in the City of West Covina. Many of those programs are held at the Cameron Park Community Center, 1305 E Cameron Ave. (NW corner at Lark Ellen) 626-919-6966. The Community Center facility offers an open gym for all ages, a game room, and after-school activities (during the school year) for elementary and middle school students. The Community Services Department also operates and offers classes at 2 other parks: Palmview, 626-339-4314 and Shadow Oak, 626-965-0328, as well as a Senior Center, 626-331-5366. Ridge Riders Equestrian Center, 300 S. Citrus, offers horseback riding classes & programs, and golfers can enjoy the facilities of the Royal Vista Golf Course in Walnut, 20055 E. Colima Rd. Edgewood Middle School and West Covina High School are the locations for various sports classes and programs, including tennis. Shadow Oak Park is the site for tiny tot & preschool classes.

The Park, Recreation & Community Services Department offers recreational programs, classes, and special events for all ages, and maintains and operates 22 parks with a variety of facilities including 2 municipal swimming pools, 20 tennis courts, 13 ball-fields and 1 outdoor concert amphitheater, and a municipal golf complex, including regulation 18 holes, driving range, 3-par course, and a 9-hole course. Other facilities include 3 community centers with gymnasiums, and 2 senior citizen centers.

The City of Norwalk Recreation and Park Services Department offers a variety of programs and classes for all ages, including athletic leagues, sports and fitness programs, and cultural arts events & classes. The Sports Center facilities include a basketball gym, boxing room, racquetball courts, and exercise room. The Cultural Arts Center offers a variety of special events, instructional classes, a musical rehearsal facility, and the Mary Paxon Art Gallery. South Gate's Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of programs and classes for all ages. Many of the programs are held at South Gate Park, a 96-acre park which includes 10 baseball diamonds, 6 tennis courts, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard court, basketball and handball courts, 9-hole Frisbee golf, and a Sports Center with Olympic size pool (323-563-5446). Other park facilities include the Municipal Auditorium & Girls Clubhouse, Senior Citizens' Clubhouse (323-566-9923), Picnic Grounds, and 3-par Golf Course (323-357-9613). Four other city parks offer a variety of amenities, including playgrounds, baseball & softball diamonds, basketball, volleyball, handball & tennis courts. Hollydale Park also has a horse arena and soccer fields (permit required for play).

 

 

Compton Recreation Department: The Dollarhide Center, 1108 N. Oleander Ave., 310-605-6330

The Compton Recreation Department is responsible for recreation and Community Services activities within the city. Compton offers a variety of recreational programs for all ages at 13 neighborhood and city-wide parks, the Compton Par Three Golf Course, equestrian and bike trails. Dollarhide Recreation Center houses the department's administrative offices as well as classes, programs and social services for Senior Citizens. Park facilities include tennis courts (Wilson Park), baseball fields, basketball courts, picnic areas with barbecue pits, restrooms, and indoor space for classes and activities. An aquatics center at Gonzales Park, and Love pool at Lueders Park provide opportunities for swim instruction as well as recreational swims. The department, jointly with Compton Unified School District, offers an after-school program for children and teens. A Summer Youth Program provides organized summer activities, such as arts & crafts and weekly field trips. A Sports Program, aimed at Middle School students, includes baseball, soccer and basketball.

The City of Hawthorne Department of Recreation & Community Services maintains, staffs, and operates recreational programs and facilities in the community, including the Teen & Senior Centers, a year round Aquatics program (Hawthorne Pool, 12220 Inglewood Ave., 310-970-7228), six parks, the new Sport Center (3851 El Segundo Blvd.), the twenty acre Camp in Wrightwood, seven Neighborhood Parks and the Memorial Center, where many of the classes and programs are held. Other programs and activities include a Community Garden, After-school Recreation, and Scouts* (310-299-4158) & Homework Help* (310-676-1908). *Both at Yukon Intermediate School. Facilities at the parks include tot lot playgrounds, baseball fields, courts for volleyball, basketball, handball and tennis, picnic tables/areas and barbecues. Most parks have restrooms and parking.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages. Early Childhood Programs include a half-day preschool, AM or PM, with or without Parent Participation (in the classroom), and full-day Child Care (Carson Community Center). Summer recreation programs are available for children and teens on a drop-in basis daily. During the school year, a before- & after-school program (Kids Club) offers educational and recreational activities at locations throughout the city. Teen programs and facilities include Veterans Skate Park, 22400 Moneta Ave, Dances & Sports Nights, and summer activities & events including a Camping Trip, Pool Party, Citywide Teen Olympics and Chess Fair, Day Camp, and Teen Summit. Teen activities at local parks include volleyball clinics & leagues, boxing, and cooking. Adult programs focus on sports & fitness, and Senior Recreation services include health programs, special events, arts & crafts, fitness, and dance classes, and clubs. The city also offers programs, such as

Special Olympics, social events, and excursions, for developmentally disabled individuals age 18 or over (individuals must be independent in regards to personal hygiene). Summer aquatics programs, for all ages, include lessons, recreational swim, and teams, with lap swimming and aqua aerobics classes open to adults.

The Alhambra Parks and Recreation Department maintains park facilities and operates a variety of recreational programs and classes for all ages at the City's parks and recreation centers. In addition, the department coordinates community special events, civic and cultural programs, a comprehensive senior program (primarily through the Joslyn Adult Center, 210 N Chapel Ave., 626-570-5056), weekly farmer's market, community garden, senior transportation services, volunteer services and contract management of the Alhambra Municipal Golf Course (630 S Almansor St., 626-570-5059). Many classes are held at Almansor (800 S Almansor St., 626-570-5052) and Granada (2000 W Hellman, 626-570-5092) Parks, both of which have pools, open during the summer months for instruction and recreational swimming, as well as water aerobics classes, and gymnasiums, with open gym times for various sports Monday-Friday evenings and scheduled hours on the weekends. All parks have open grass areas, most have picnic facilities, barbecues and restrooms. Other park amenities include baseball fields, volleyball, tennis & basketball courts, exercise courses, and indoor activity and meeting rooms.

Most parks have picnic shelters/barbecues, school-age & tot lot playgrounds, and meeting room(s). Some have lighted athletic fields and/or game courts, kitchen, and a seasonal wading pool. Monte Verde Park hosts the city’s vacation day camp programs. Mayfair Park and Bolivar Park each have public pools, with family swimming, seasonal swimming instruction, and other classes. Mayfair Park (5720 Clark Ave.,562-866-4776), the city's main recreational facility, also contains the John S. Todd Community Center, and tennis courts. The Mayfair High School Gym, through a cooperative use agreement with the city, offers evening and weekend sports leagues and programs. All parks have facilities available for rental.

The Baldwin Park Teen Center & Skate Park also features a game room and facilities for weight training, and provides a variety of activities for teens, including dances and driver education. Morgan Park, located in the center of Baldwin Park, features a tot-lot and a preteen playground area that meets all American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Walnut Creek Nature Park offers an open nature court and features a playground and fitness trail. Youth sports programs meet at the community center and local elementary & middle schools.

The Recreation & Community Services Department provides Lynwood and surrounding communities with many diverse; recreation, aquatic, sports, youth camps, classes, excursions and related programs for all ages. The Department conducts citywide special events and activities and services for the senior adult population, along with local transportation services. The Department also manages and operates the City's public community centers, aquatic facility, rental facilities and public parks. Lynwood Community/Transit Center, 11301 Bullis Rd., sponsors several sports programs for children and adults. Lynwood City Park, recently renovated, is the major location for all youth and adult sports programs coordinated by Lynwood Recreation and Community Services. Park amenities include picnic shelters, a tennis court, playgrounds, three baseball diamonds, two soccer fields, concession building and restrooms. Lynwood Skate Park, 310-603-0220, ext.319, recently opened and is located on Bullis Road across the street from Lynwood City Hall. The Pico Rivera Recreation Department operates nine parks containing 18 athletic fields, two gymnasiums and two community centers. Other facilities include five playground areas, some of which are handicapped-accessible, an Olympic size public swimming facility, a lighted nine-hole executive golf course (Pico Rivera Municipal Golf Course, 3620 Fairway Drive, 562-692-9933), gyms, outdoor courts for tennis and handball, and lighted ball diamonds and fields for football and soccer. For elementary & middle school-age children, the Department jointly runs a free after-school program (REACH) with the El Rancho Unified School District (ERUSD). This program operates at 11 ERUSD elementary schools: Birney, Durfee, Magee, Meller, North Ranchito, Obregon, Pio Pico, Rio Vista, Rivera, Selby Grove, South Ranchito, and Valencia. Classes and programs include Senior citizen activities such as clubs, exercise classes, Tai Chi classes; youth sports leagues in flag football, basketball, softball, baseball, and track and field; adult sports leagues in volleyball, basketball and slow pitch softball; instruction and recreational swimming; special interest classes, such as dance, gymnastics, phonics, math, crafts, tennis; specialized programs for the developmentally disabled population, including the Special Olympics and monthly dances; community special events, such as the Easter Bunny Brunch, Breakfast with Santa Claus, Martin Luther King Jr., and Cinco de Mayo parades and celebrations, Black History Month Celebration, Heritage Festival, Youth Carnival, Festival of the Performing Arts, Cymbidium Orchid Show, Koi Show, Celebration of the Arts Show, and Golf Tournaments. The City operates and maintains nine parks, recreational trails, and recreation facilities throughout the city. More than 160 acres encompass the nine developed parks, featuring playgrounds, tot lots, barbecues, picnic areas, athletic fields, basketball, tennis & volleyball courts, a Skate Park (at Peterson Park, 24142 E. Sylvan Glen Rd.) and meeting rooms. Park admission is free and the parks are open everyday from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset, or until 10:00 P.M. for the lighted facilities. The city offers a variety of classes, programs, trips and special events for all ages, including sports, fitness, arts & crafts, computer, and special interest. A preschool program meets at Heritage Park (2900 S. Brea Canyon Rd.) & Pantera Park (738 Pantera Dr.). Free tutoring for K-12 students is offered at Diamond Bar Center. The Diamond Bar Center, 1600 S. Grand Ave., also features a Senior Center, offering classes, activities and services for senior citizens, and youth gymnastics and dance classes & facilities. Diamond Bar Golf Course, 22751 Golden Springs Dr., a county-owned public golf course, features an18 hole course, driving range, pro shop, banquet facilities, and restaurant. The Arcadia Recreation & Community Services Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages. A free after-school drop-in playground program goes from 2:30-4:30 M-F during the school year at Stocker, Camino Grove, Highland Oaks, Holly Avenue, Reid and Longley Way Elementary Schools. Facilities include Cerritos Olympic Swim and Fitness Center, Cerritos Sports Complex, Cerritos Skate Park, Iron-Wood Nine Golf Course, Heritage Park, Liberty Park, Cerritos Park East, Community Gymnasiums, Neighborhood Parks and Cerritos Regional Park. The Cerritos Olympic Swim and Fitness Center is an enclosed 50-meter pool with dressing rooms, fitness center, snack bar, press box area and seating capacity for 1,400. Swimming classes for children and adults, recreation swimming and lap swimming sessions are held regularly. The Fitness Center includes a multi-max station, treadmills, stair climbers, and lifecycles. Iron-Wood Nine Golf Course, 16449 Piuma Ave., 562-916-8400, includes a lighted driving range and offers rentals of hand carts and clubs. The course is open daily and golf lessons are available. Some of the parks include facilities for active sports, such as soccer and baseball fields, while others are more suited to passive recreation, with strolling areas and ampitheaters. Covina Park (4th Ave. & Baudillo St.) also has tennis courts, available for play, classes, and private lessons. The Azusa Recreation and Parks department also offers an after school park and playground program for drop in play and youth sport participation. During the summer our new aquatic center is open with a Learn to Swim program, a novice swim team, and recreation swim hours. Park facilities include 8 parks, 1 mini-park, and a location at the Azusa Women's Club. Six of the parks feature amenities such as playgrounds, lighted and unlighted softball/baseball fields, lighted basketball & tennis courts, soccer fields, and picnic shelters & facilities. The City of Bell Gardens' Recreation Services Department provides recreation programs to all segments of the community. Facilities and equipment are available for residents, community groups and businesses for social, recreational and service programs. Facilities include 6 parks, including Bell Gardens Veterans Park, which houses the department's administrative offices. Amenities at the parks include playgrounds and picnic areas. Adult classes focus on Aerobics/Fitness, but also include a Salsa Dance class (open to teens age 15 & up as well). All classes except for youth & small fry sports programs meet at Bell Gardens Veterans Park or the Neighborhood Youth Center. Classes for children and youth include Kreative Kids Time for preschoolers, and Small Fry and Youth Sports Programs for ages 5-7 and 8-13 respectively (free program). A Judo/Karate Class is offered for ages 7 & up.

La Puente Recreation Services provide recreational, cultural, educational and social opportunities for community residents. A variety of supervised activities are offered at La Puente Park and community school sites. Programs include youth and adult sports leagues and tournaments, tiny tot recreation, after school playground programs, recreation classes, facility rentals, and community special events. The primary recreational facility in the City is La Puente Park, which features two lighted baseball fields, picnic areas with a covered patio area, tables, benches and barbecue grills, lighted tennis and basketball courts, four handball courts, children's play area, a multi-use turf area for organized soccer games and other sports, and a 150-space parking lot. The community center inside the park features meeting rooms, an auditorium, gym, kitchen and outdoor stage, and its facilities are available for rental to community organizations by reservation. Classes held at the center include Dance, Fitness, Crafts, Tumbling, Cartooning, Spanish, Music, Sports, Judo, and Computer. A preschool (Tiny Tot) program meets in 10-week sessions, AM or PM, for 2 1/2 hours 2 or 3 days per week.

School age children can participate in the Star Club program offering after school activities at the Community Center and three school sites in La Puente. The Hacienda/La Puente Adult Education program offers classes at the La Puente Community Center in Chinese Painting, Quilting and Crochet/Knitting.

The Rancho Palos Verdes Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages, with a focus on sports, martial arts/karate, dance, and health/fitness classes, but including special interests such as Conversational Spanish, Suzuki Music (string instruments), Amateur Radio, FCC Technician's License, Outdoor Adventures, Lata's Indian Vegetarian Cooking, and Passion, Energy, Prosperity (PEP) workshops. Parent/Tot programs include Mommy & Me, Music N Motion, SHAPES Parent & Me, Suika Mommy & Me, and Wee Tots. Most classes meet at the Fred Hesse Jr. Community Park, 29301 Hawthorne Blvd., 310-541-8114. The REACH program offers recreational and social activities and programs year-round for youth & young adults with developmental disabilities, and includes camps, dances, 3-day trips, special events, and art & music therapy in its services. The participant to staff ratio is 7:1. Park facilities include 7 active park sites, and 7 others suitable for passive recreation (e.g. picnics, walking/strolling). Barbecues are not permitted at passive recreation parks and are allowed by permit at the Ladera Linda Community Center and at Ryan Community Park (7 barbecue pits available) and at the upper park areas of Hesse Community Park (11 barbecue pits available). All active parks have drinking fountains, ocean view, on-site parking, picnic facilities, public phones and restroom (portable toilet at one location). Many or most of the active parks also feature handicapped access, multi-purpose field, pathways & trails, and patios. Some have facilities for soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, basketball, paddle tennis and volleyball, as well as a community building and children's play area. All of the passive parks feature pathways & trails, some have an ocean view, on-site parking, handicapped access, multi purpose field, and drinking fountains. Dogs are welcome at all of the parks, but must be on a leash. Eastview Park, 1700 Westmont Ave. in San Pedro, is the only passive recreation park to feature picnic tables, public phone & restroom, and a children's play area. Ladera Linda Community Center, 32201 Forrestal Dr., 310-377-5370, houses the Discovery Room, which features live and static exhibits of local flora, fauna and historic information.

The San Gabriel Parks & Recreation Department offers recreation classes for all ages, including dance, yoga, gymnastics, fitness, arts & crafts, sports and dog obedience. Trips and special events are offered periodically as well. Many classes and programs meet at the Community Recreation Center, which houses the Parks and Recreation office. Other programs are held at the nearby Adult Recreation Center and Senior Center, 324 S Mission Dr., 626-308-2823, located in Grapevine Park, which also features Grapevine Arbor, a building with Spanish style architecture and a lush garden that is available for rental. Smith Park Pool, 232 W. Broadway, is the location for swim instruction and other open swim activities each summer from mid June through Labor Day. In addition, the San Gabriel Sea Gulls, a competitive swim team, practice year-round at the pool. Other facilities include Roosevelt Park, 401 S. Walnut Grove, 626-308-2823, Vincent Lugo Park, Wells & Ramona Streets, 626-287-9421, Plaza Park, 428 S Mission Dr.(which offers a view of the San Gabriel Mission), Roosevelt Park: 5410 Delta St., and Smith Park, 232 W Broadway. Roosevelt, Vincent Lugo and Smith Parks all feature a Children's Playground (7 years and older). Vincent Lugo and Smith Parks also have a Tiny Tot Playground (6 years and younger), and 2 lighted tennis courts. Roosevelt Park also has a barbecue, picnic shelter, tables, while Smith Park features a lighted basketball court, 4 lighted handball courts, and picnic areas reflecting the heritage of the Gabrielino-Tongva Native Americans. Vincent Lugo Park also offers barbecues, picnic shelter, tables, a lighted youth baseball diamond, the Laguna de San Gabriel Nautical (Dinosaur) Playground and the Girl Scout House.

The Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department's Recreation Division offers a variety of recreational classes and activities for all ages, including Adult & Youth Sports, Arts and Crafts, Dance, Exercise/Fitness, Martial Arts, Aquatics, and Music. Preschool classes include Kids Time (AM preschool), Pre-K, and K-Troop (before or after Kindergarten care). School-age after-school programs are available for elementary and middle school children. The elementary school age programs meet at Blanco Park: 5801 Sawtelle Blvd (next to El Rincon School), El Marino Park/School: 5301 Berryman Ave., La Ballona Elementary, 10915 Washington Blvd., and Linwood Howe Elementary, 4100 Irving Place, and serve students of those schools. Middle school programs meet at Culver City Middle School, 4601 Elenda St. (before- & after-school). Both programs provide homework assistance, crafts, games, special events & field trips, and the before-school program (Goodtimes) is a partnership between the Culver-Palms Family YMCA, the School District and the City for which the YMCA staff provides supervision. Goodtimes is grant-funded and free of charge to participants. The Teen Center offers a year-round Drop-in program at Veteran's Park for students at Culver City Middle School & High School. Program activities include Homework Assistance, Crafts and Games, Computer Lab, Game Room, Youth Employment, Dances, Weight Room, Community Service, Sports, Special Events & Field Trips. A licensed child care program, (Recreation and Early Child Care or RECC) is open during the school year to children in grades 1-5 attending El Marino, Farragut and El Rincon schools. Program activities include Homework Assistance, Crafts & Games, Cooking Projects, Sports, Special Events & Field Trips. Culver City Middle School students may be accepted on a contingency basis. The Playground & After-School Program provides recreational activities (sports-basketball, football, soccer and softball, arts & crafts-painting, lanyards, drawing, and collage, tournaments-chess, checkers, caroms & ping pong) at nine different parks (Blanco, Culver City, Culver West, El Marino, Fox Hills, Lindberg, Syd Kronenthal, and Veteran's) and two schools (La Ballona and Linwood Howe). Aquatics programs meet at Culver City Plunge, 4175 Overland Ave., 310-253-6680 (near the Parks & Recreation Office & Community Center). Culver City offers a variety of neighborhood parks for leisure activities. Most of the neighborhood parks have a recreation hut or building with restrooms, picnic facilities (shelter & tables, barbecues), children's playgrounds (with equipment), sports fields (baseball/softball, soccer), courts (basketball, tennis), and grass areas. Some of the parks feature lighting for night-time activities. Carlson Park, located in the East Park neighborhood, is home to Culver City Public Theater, and features 2 Fireplaces. Culver City Park, corner of Duquesne & Jefferson, 310-558-8638, includes a Skateboard Park and Interpretive Nature Trail (ADA Accessible). All Parks allow Moon-bounces with a proper permit and picnics between 9:00 AM & 6:00 PM daily.

The Monrovia Recreation Division of the Community Services Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages, including Dance, Musical Theater, Acting, Cheerleading, Gymnastics, Yoga, Martial Arts/Self Defense, Arts & Crafts, Sports, Aquatics, Rock Climbing, Aerobics/Fitness, Dog Obedience, Preschool & Parent/Tot classes. Cultural activities and special events include the annual Monrovia Arts Festival in October, the Monrovia Historical Museum, the Mother’s Day Old Homes Tour, the weekly summer Concerts in the Park series and an annual Jazz Festival (coming soon). For elementary school age children, the Neighborhood Recreation Program provides drop-in activities, including crafts, games, sports, and contests, and meets at Mayflower Elementary school from 2:00-5:00 PM Monday-Friday. During the summer, in July & August, children and youths ages 6-16 can participate from 11 AM-5 PM weekdays in the Summer Extravaganza Program at the Recreation Facility, a joint effort of the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and the City of Monrovia Community Services Recreation Division, which offers a variety of activities such as swimming, arts & crafts, drama, sports, exercise, games and excursions. Transportation is provided from and to various locations in Monrovia. High school age students can get a boost on test scores with the ISEE, HSPT & SAT Test Prep classes, from the Foothill Mathematics Staff. Monrovia residents can enjoy unstructured recreation at any of Monrovia's 8 parks. Most parks have ADA approved playground equipment, drinking fountains (some ADA approved), and picnic tables. Some parks have picnic shelters and restrooms. Recreation Park, Shamrock and Lemon, also offers barbecues, restrooms, baseball field, tennis courts, hardcourt (basketball, roller hockey and skateboarding), and a sand volleyball court. Monrovia Library Park, Myrtle at Lime, features a band shell. Monrovia Canyon Park, 1200 N. Canyon Blvd., also offers a Nature Center, Cabin Conference Facility for rent, and hiking trails. Other facilities include the Monrovia Skate Park, adjacent to the Mary Wilcox Youth Center, 843 E Olive Ave and privately owned locations for classes, such as Red Dragon Karate, 449 W Foothill Blvd., Paint 'N' Play, 418 S Myrtle Ave., and Jungle Gym 305 N Santa Anita in Arcadia. Aquatic activities include The "Watercats", who operate a competitive swim team for children and youth up to age 18 and practices at Monrovia High School, and summer swimming lessons offered by the city for all ages.

Elementary School age children can participate in drop-in Playground Programs and Kids Fun Club offers before- & after-school care, as well as summer and winter break camps. Teenagers can participate in dances held at the Community Building, as well as other teen-oriented activities at the Student Union, 990 Covina Blvd. Most classes are held at the Community Building, adjoining City Hall and in the Civic Center Park. Activities at the Teen Center in Plummer Park include Youth Leadership, and a Teen Program that meets T-F 6-9 PM and Sat 3-9 PM and whose components include Community Service, Sports & Recreation, Field Trips, Academic Support, Guest Speakers, Drug & Alcohol Awareness, and Excursions. Other classes for teens include Jiu Jitzu and Roller Hockey. The Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of facilities that include athletic fields, tennis, paddle tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, par courses, jogging and bike paths, a nine-hole golf course, and swimming pool (Begg Pool, open during the summer, 310- 802-5428, adjacent to Polliwog Park at 1601 Manhattan Beach Blvd.) At Mira Costa High School, in addition to athletic fields and tennis courts, facilities available for public use include a gymnasium and track. Also located within the City is a 2-mile walking and jogging path that runs parallel to a bike path along the beach. Cultural Arts Facilities include a ceramic studio in Live Oak Park, 1901 Valley Dr., 310-545-0888 and the Creative Arts Center, 1560 Manhattan Beach Blvd., 310-802-5440. The Department offers a variety of sports classes and tournaments for youth including: the Jr. Manhattan Open/Cal Cup Youth State Championships/USAVB & AAU Beach Volleyball Tournament, Football Passing League, Basketball Camps and Leagues, Baseball Camps Surfing Camps, Beach Volleyball Classes, In-line Skating, Ice Skating, Gymnastics & Tumbling, Karate, Tennis, Pintsize Fitness & Sports, Volleyball, and Snowboard & Ski Trips. Claremont offers recreation classes for all ages, including youth & adult sports, aquatics (summer), fitness, martial arts, and adult special interest classes, as well as activities for children and older adults. Youth Scholarships are available to qualified families. The Claremont High School pool is open all summer for public swim hours and classes including diving, water polo and swimming lessons for tiny tots, children, and adults. Wading pools are also open certain weekday hours at Memorial and Wheeler Parks. Recreational and child care programs include a licensed preschool (ABC's for Me), Day camps and an after-school program at Memorial Park and Lewis Park (881 Syracuse Dr.) for elementary school children. School age programs feature activities such games, crafts, special guests, theme weeks and field trips. For middle school students, the TRACKS Program (TRACKS activity center at El Roble Intermediate School, 909-399-5373) offers sports, classes, special events, and trips. Older teens can drop-in at the Youth Activity Center 1717 N. Indian Hill Blvd., 909-399-5360, which offers games, special events, volunteer opportunities, peer support groups, anger management programs, and informational services. Senior Programs, including a variety of activities, classes, interest groups, trips, and special events, as well as information and referral, case management, and shared housing service, are offered at the Joslyn Senior Center, 660 N. College Ave, 909-399-536, host a Senior Lunch Program for people age 60 or older and their spouses (suggested donation of $2.00 per person). Many of the classes and programs meet at Alexander Hughes Community Center (in Lewis Park), which houses the preschool, a computer center, and also includes classrooms, meeting rooms for 20 to 150 people, activity rooms, creative arts center and kitchen. The city operates nearly 20 parks throughout the community, with a variety of facilities, including parking lots, playgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, tennis, basketball & volleyball courts, soccer, softball & baseball fields. Some of the facilities are lighted, and a few have handicapped-accessible features (such as playground, restroom, picnic area). Two parks have off-leash dog areas (College Park, 100 S College Ave. & Rancho San Jose Park, 600 block of W San Jose Ave.) Vail Park features the community's only equestrian ring. Blaisdell Park's facilities are fully handicapped-accessible. Mallows Park, 520 N. Indian Hill Blvd., houses a recreation program building. Centrally located Memorial Park, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd., is the town's primary community park, and houses the historic Garner House, the current home of Claremont Heritage, as well as the tiny-tots program, a summer day camp program, many large group picnics, a Bandshell, and a wading pool. Thompson Creek Trail is a linear park in north Claremont, with a paved trail suitable for walking, jogging/running, bicycling, and dog walking (leashed dogs). Wheeler Park, 626 Vista Drive (southernmost end of the city), is home to Claremont’s only roller hockey court, the City's after-school and licensed preschool programs, Claremont Adult School’s Mommy & Me Program, and the Wheeler Community Computer Lab. Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, north of Claremont, is primarily a wilderness preserve with rugged inaccessible terrain. A system of fire roads provides for hiking, biking, walking leashed dogs, and horseback riding.

The department provides classes and activities for all age levels. Elementary school age children can participate in an after-school drop in program (Camp Oswalt & Camp Trojan), at Oswalt or Morris Elementary Schools (909-598-5605). This program is free, meets from 2:30-5 PM MWF and is for grades 3-6. Other youth activities and classes include arts & crafts, dance, cheerleading, music, chess and acting. All ages: sports (basketball, in-line skating, tennis, fencing, table tennis, badminton) Adult classes and programs include Fitness/Yoga and Special Interest/Enrichment classes such as Scrapbook Making, Gourmet Chinese Cooking, Dog Obedience, Flower Arranging, and Smoking Cessation. Sports programs available for all ages include basketball, in-line skating, tennis, fencing, table tennis, and badminton, additionally adults can participate in a softball or basketball league, while children are offered classes and activities involving ice skating, ice hockey, bowling, soccer, and gymnastics. Tai Chi and Karate classes are available, and computer classes are offered for all ages.  Senior citizen programs & services include free seminars, lunch program, clubs and activities such as bridge, table tennis/ping pong, bingo, billiards, movies and origami.

The Parks and Recreation Department provides programs, classes and special events for seniors, adults and youth. The Park and Recreation Department is open to the public seven days a week. Facilities include a gymnasium, weight room, volleyball courts, social hall, play equipment area, softball field, baseball field, and game room. Many of the recreational programs meet at the Maywood Activity Center, which is available for general public use.  Sports programs for children include Peanut Sports (basketball, t-ball and flag football) for ages 5-7 and Youth Sports (baseball, basketball, flag football, and girls' softball & volleyball). The Maywood Boxing Club, 4745 E 56th St., 323-773-0579, offers boxing classes for youth ages 8-17. Adult sports include leagues for basketball, and coed volleyball and softball). Aerobics classes are offered for individuals ages 14 & up. During the summer, swimming instruction and recreational swimming is available at the pool. A Senior citizen nutrition program (lunch) is also held at the activity center, at noon Mon-Fri.

The Lawndale Parks and Recreation Division offers a variety of recreational services that include competitive and non-competitive team sports, after-school and summer drop-in park activities, teen activities, arts and crafts, summer wading pools, excursions, Tiny Tot classes, and VolunTeens. A toy loan library is available for families with young children and teenagers ages 12-15 can join Teen Time and participate in a variety of activities such as cooking, crafts, excursions, television classes, games and activities. The City of Lawndale has three parks, with staff supervised hours after-school and on weekends and holidays. The Frank Hogan Tot Lot has no department staff supervision. Jane Addams, William Green and Roger-Anderson parks each have a baseball field, a basketball court, playground equipment and picnic area. There is also a gym jointly used by the City and the Elementary School District.

The South Pasadena Community Services Dept provides classes and programs for all ages. Most classes and programs are held at the Orange Grove Recreation Center/Orange Grove Park (Recreation & Youth Services location), 815 Mission St., 626-403-7385, or the Senior Center, 1102 Oxley. Some classes meet at the War Memorial. An acting class offered by Upstage (a part-time professional theater) meets at the Women's Club of South Pasadena. Basketball Fundamentals, grades K-3, meets at Marengo Elementary. An after-school care program is available for elementary school age children, as well as winter and spring break camps. Classes include dance, arts & crafts, karate, tennis, gymnastics (Payke Gymnastics Academy), horseback riding & horsemanship (South Pasadena Stables), cooking, etiquette/manners, fencing, music (guitar, drums), ice skating (Pasadena Ice Skating Rink, 310 E Green St.), chess (club), yoga, tai chi, fitness, nutrition, and cake decorating. Senior activities and events include Mah Jong, Foreign Film Club, Holiday Luncheon, and Health Fair. SAT, ISEE and HSPT Test Prep classes are available for teenagers (instructors from the Foothill Math Group).

Classes and programs offered include Dance and Music (Mariachi Master Apprentice Program, Mexican Folklorico Dance, Dances of Panama, Hip Hop/Jazz Dance, Cheerleading) and Youth & Adult Sports (Basketball, Soccer, Karate, Softball, Co-Ed Softball). Seasonal programs & classes include the San Fernando Sharks Swim Team, a competitive program during the summer for beginner to intermediate swimmers, ages 7 to 17, and Summer Day Camp for children/youths ages 5-14, which is held at Recreation Park (cost of $35-$60/week for residents, $65/week for non-residents, exclusive of lunch or trips). Events for children and teens, all held at Las Palmas Park, include a Teen Dance, Teen 3 on 3 Easter Basketball Tournament and an Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival. Other programs for children include the After School Community Enrichment Program (ASCEP), which provides children in grades 1-5 with a variety of educational (Literacy, Homework Assistance, Tutoring, Reading, Computer Lab, Math & Science) and enrichment (Arts and Crafts, Cultural Activities, Field Trips, Swimming, Music/Drama, Games/Organized Sports, Special Events) activities, including a nutritional component. On-site ASCEP is available from 2-6 PM M-F, to students at San Fernando Elementary, O’Melveny Elementary, Gridley Elementary, and Morningside Elementary. The Teens Learning for the Future Program is designed to help prepare teens for jobs in the Recreation Field, and covers the interview process to the daily duties of the Recreation Leader. The program includes mandatory training sessions that are held throughout the week. The Computer Technology Enhancement Program, through a State Farm Insurance Grant, provides free computer classes at the Las Palmas Park Learning Center. 8-week sessions, including Adult and Senior Citizen Classes with a Bilingual Instructor (English & Spanish), address topics such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet Browsing. Senior Programs include a Nutrition Program, Blood Pressure Screening, Senior Supportive Services, Today's Golden Dreams, 55 Alive Driver Safety, English Class, Golden Fitness, Las Palmas Fine and Applied Arts Program, Las Palmas Club Arts and Crafts Class, Line Dance, Las Palmas Senior Club, Park Avenue Club, Friendship Club. Senior Excursions include a variety of local/regional trips, transportation usually included, with boarding at Las Palmas or Recreation Park. Both Las Palmas and Recreation Park feature baseball & soccer fields, basketball courts, gym, meeting rooms, picnic area, tot lot, and Senior Center. Las Palmas Park also includes a banquet room, arts and crafts room, and recreation lounge. Recreation Park includes a swimming pool. Pioneer and Layne Parks include such features as a Picnic Area, Tot Lot, and Basketball Courts. Pioneer Park also includes a Baseball Field and Tennis Courts. The City of Calabasas offers a wide variety of classes, programs and services through the Community Services Department, including dance, fitness/yoga, sports, swimming, music, fencing, and arts & crafts. Two after-school Enrichment Programs are offered, one at Lupin Hill Elementary and the other at Chaparral Elementary. Both programs feature art, sports, music, science and chess classes, as well as some special interest programs (varies between schools). A beginning soccer workshop is offered at Stelle Middle School. Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center 27040 Malibu Hills Rd., 818-880-2993 is a joint venture with the City of Agoura Hills, which includes indoor aerobic facilities, outdoor courts and a refreshment area. Bark Park, 4232 Las Virgenes Rd., 818-878-4225 features a separate gated children's play area, doggie drinking fountain, pooper skoopers, parking, and a bulletin board. Highlands Park, 23581 Summit Drive, 818-880-6461, includes a children's play area. The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for youth sports, adult sports, special events, recreation classes, senior, youth and adult excursions, cultural events, senior services and programs, the Fitness Center, teen services and programs, Club Kids day care, beautification awards, aquatics, and supervised parks. Recreational classes and programs include arts & crafts, dance, cheerleading/pompom, sports, cooking, karate, gymnastics, and fitness. Specialty classes for preschoolers include Parent-Tot time, emphasizing language development, socialization and motor development through art, music, stories and more. Older children can enroll in homework helper (4 1-hour classes), with private tutoring also available by appointment. Special interest classes and programs for adults include dog obedience and real estate investment workshop. Aerobics/fitness classes meet at the Fitness Center, 1600 Huntington Drive, 626-357-6118, next to City Hall. This facility includes a 25-yard competition pool, training pool, shower and locker facilities, aerobic area and fully equipped exercise room, and two courts available for either racquetball or wallyball. Duarte Teen Center, 1400 Buena Vista St., 626-303-0863, includes a computer lab, equipped for teens to enhance computer skills, learn new programs, chat on the Internet, do school work, and play computer games. For elementary school age children, The City of Duarte's "Club Kids" after school day care program is available M-F until 6 PM. The Duarte Unified School District transports the children to Club Kids, in Duarte Park, 1344 Bloomdale Street. Activities include snacks, homework time, games, movies, crafts, and outdoor play. Day care is available for school holidays and teacher in-service days. For upper-classmen at Duarte High School, the Intern Program provides summer employment opportunities of 15–20 hours per week, with flexible hours (students must maintain a 2.0 GPA, and have parental consent.) Seven city departments participate in the program and there is a college scholarship program available to interns. For residents 55 years and older, the Duarte Senior Center, 1610 Huntington Drive, 626-357-3513, is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 2:00 PM, and offers hot lunch to individuals over 60 years and their spouses, Meals on Wheels, and an Alzheimer’s Safe Return Registration program. Most of Duarte's 12 parks feature a picnic area with barbecue pits, and playground equipment. Some parks have restrooms, softball fields (some are lighted), and tennis, volleyball/sand volleyball and basketball courts (some are lighted). Sports Park, 1401 Central Avenue, features a hockey rink as well. Royal Oaks Park, 2627 Royal Oaks Drive, features a Recreation building and volleyball courts. Encanto Park 751 Encanto Parkway, includes an equestrian trail and multipurpose field. Beardslee Park, 2000 Buena Vista Street, has a soccer field, and amphitheater. Northview Park, 1433 Highland Avenue, consists of a 2 acre Multipurpose field. Beardslee, Encanto, Royal Oaks, and Duarte Parks, as well as Duarte School, 1433 Crestfield Drive, offer supervised park hours during the summer, staffed with trained recreation leaders, from Noon-5 PM M-F and Noon-7 PM on weekends, and offering activities including sports, arts and crafts, games, and tournaments.

The Lomita Parks and Recreation Department offers classes and programs for all ages, including youth team sports (Basketball), youth & adult individual sports (ice skating, ice hockey, tennis), and youth & adult cultural programs (dance, karate, oil painting workshop, and yoga. All programs (except for ice skating & ice hockey) meet at the Recreation Center, which features a gym, tennis courts, playground and a park. The Ice Chalet at Palos Verdes Mall is the location for the ice skating & ice hockey classes and programs.

The South El Monte Parks and Recreation Division of the Community Services Department provides classes and programs for all ages, including aerobics, dancercise, art, guitar, scrapbooking, boxing, cake decorating, cheerleading, DJ workshops, flower arrangements, Folklorico, Hip Hop dance, cooking, Preschool Prep, taekwondo, and tap & ballet. The City of Commerce Department of Parks & Recreation offers a comprehensive recreation and parks program to city residents. The Department offers 95% recreational programs and activities at no cost to residents, with the other 5% of the recreational programs offered at a low nominal cost. The Teen Center offers a variety of organized teen oriented recreational programs such as exercise, arts & crafts, cooking, drawing, painting, performing arts, tournaments and dances, as well as fishing, camping, beach trips and hiking excursions. The facility includes computers with internet access, pool tables, video games, a social area with a big screen TV and a kitchen. The Senior Citizens Center (a restricted facility for adults 50 years & older) offers a variety of organized senior-oriented recreational programs, such as exercise, arts & crafts, cooking, drawing, painting, line dancing, ballroom dancing, salsa dancing, Chi Gong, tournaments and dances as well as excursions to locations of interest in Southern California. The Senior Citizens Center features computers with internet access, pool tables, video/TV room, exercise room, a social area with a fireplace and a fully-operational kitchen. A daily Lunch Nutrition Program is available, along with transportation to and from the center and a Ride Assistance Program to help the seniors do their errands. Bristow Scout Hut is used by the various scouting organizations in the City of Commerce and by the Department of Parks and Recreation for youth programs. The Aquatorium, 5600 Harbor, 323-887-4404, is an indoor aquatic facility that provides a variety of aquatic related programs and activities, including CPR & First Aid/Safety classes, swim lessons, recreational swimming, competitive swim and water polo for ages 6 months to senior citizens. The Aquatorium also includes a fitness center, male & female locker rooms, shower facilities, two dry heat saunas (one male & one female), and an outdoor children's wading pool. Four neighborhood parks also offer outdoor activities, such as organized youth sports in basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, volleyball, picnic shelters, playgrounds and a children's wading pool, which is open during the summer. Each has a community center, which offers a variety of recreational programs and activities for all age levels. Bandini Park/Batres Community Center, 4725 Astor Ave., 323-264-5045, also has an after-school recreational program. Bristow Park, 1466 S. McDonnell Ave., 323-269-5603, features a boxing program. Veteran's Memorial Park, 6364 Zindell Ave., 562-927-1515, has a class "A" baseball stadium with grandstand seating for over 2,000 spectators, and a twenty-lane indoor marksmanship range (562-928-3119). Camp Commerce, 465 S. Highway #173, Lake Arrowhead CA 92352, 909-337-6680, is a year-round organized youth and family camp owned and operated by the City of Commerce. Residents can sign up year-round for a variety of camping sessions for youth, family and senior citizens. The camp program provides bus transportation to and from the camp, local transportation, meals and sleeping accommodations. The camp has ten two-story cabins, a lodge, swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts.

The Study & Play After-school Recreation Program (S.P.A.R.K.) is offered for middle school students and meets at El Segundo Middle School.

Current youth programs and activities include boxing and sports (flag football for boys, volleyball for girls). The City of Hawaiian Gardens and the ABC Adult School offers a variety of classes at Helen Rosas Center, including ESL, ESL Citizenship, GED, Spanish, and Spanish Literary Improvement. Lee Ware Park facilities include a recreation center, pool, and game room featuring board and video games, as well as a computer room and kitchen. Clarkdale Park features a game room with board games, skate park, basketball court, wading pool and playground equipment

The Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes, including sports, dance, karate, tai chi and yoga. The AARP Driver Safety Program is geared for older adults, and other adult classes such as First Aid & CPR, Surfing, and Dog Obedience are also offered. Adult sports leagues focus on slow-pitch baseball, flag football, volleyball and basketball. Youth classes include gymnastics, roller hockey clinic and American Red Cross Babysitter's Training. Parent/Child classes include music, cheerleading, karate, and Wiggle, Giggle & Squiqqle at the Art Zone Children's Studio @ 323 Pier Avenue. Many classes meet at the Community /Civic Center. The Betty Wilson Center offers weekly health and leisure activities such as arts and crafts, bingo, and country and social dancing to senior citizens. The

Santa Fe Springs "Diamond" and Blyleven Baseball School features nine batting cages with hardball, softball, and slow and fast pitching machines and offers year-round baseball and softball schools. Clarke Estate Center Court is a multi-purpose roller skating facility with an outdoor roller rink and tennis, basketball, volleyball and handball courts. Heritage Park Town Center Hall houses a teen center and offers meeting rooms to community and industrial residents for social and professional use. The department also offers 2 Athletic Parks (Lake Center, 11641 E. Florence Ave., and Santa Fe Springs, 9720 Pioneer Blvd.) featuring baseball/softball fields, and playing fields. 3 parks (Little Lake, 10900 Pioneer Blvd., Los Nietos, 11143 Charlesworth Rd., and Santa Fe Springs, 10068 Cedardale Dr.) include baseball/softball fields, playing fields, basketball, handball, & volleyball courts, equipment for use, playgrounds, wading pools, picnic area, and horseshoes. Lakeview Recreation Area, 10225 S. Jersey Ave., includes all features of the parks except for horsehoes.

The Recreation Department offers approximately 100 classes year round for all ages, including Arts &Crafts, Dance, Sports, Fitness, Gymnastics, Cheerleading, Skiing, Swimming, Martial Arts, Science, Children's Theater, Visual Arts, Music, Pre-School/Toddler Classes, Language (Spanish), and Dog Obedience Training. Other programs include Senior Tours and special events such as the Easter Egg Hunt and All City Track Meet. After-school enrichment programs and summer day camps as well as specialized sports camp are available for grade- and middle-school age children. Lacy Park is a 30 acre park located in the center of San Marino between Virgina Road and St Albans Road, and north of Monterey Road.  Within the park are open green areas, a picnic area and many varieties of trees and shrubs, and two walking loops: an inner loop about 3/4 mile in length, and an outer loop about 1 mile in length.  The park includes 6 tennis courts and a pro shop (administered by the San Marino Tennis Foundation), and Park Rose Arbor,

at the west entrance of the park. Lacy Park is the site for most recreation department classes and programs.

The City of Sierra Madre Community Services Department provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities for children, young adults, adults and seniors. This includes classes in dance, fitness, karate, tennis, gymnastics, yoga, swimming, and special interest classes such as Lord of the Rings book discussion and Scrapbooking. The Pasadena YMCA offers an after-school adventures program, located at the Sierra Madre Recreation Center, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd, and serving children in grades K-5. The Community Volunteer Program offers teens, ages 13-17, opportunities to complete community service hours required by many schools and organizations. The City of Sierra Madre has 3 parks: Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park, 451 W. Carter Ave., Memorial Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd, and Sierra Vista Park, 611 E Sierra Madre Blvd. All 3 parks feature picnic areas, barbeques, outdoor restrooms, and playgrounds. Bailey Canyon Wilderness and Memorial Parks include hiking and/or nature trails. Memorial and Sierra Vista Parks feature tennis courts, a covered pavilion, an interpretive display (including the Mt. Wilson Observatory in Memorial Park). Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park also includes a fire ring, native botanical area, and handicap accessibility and parking. Memorial Park's facilities also include a senior center, band shell, community gardens, Memorial Wall, and Veterans Memorial. Points of interest within the park include Lizzie’s Trail Inn and Richardson House. Sierra Vista Park also features a community recreation center, municipal swimming pool (seasonal), volleyball & basketball courts, athletic fields, dog park, and Rose Float Building.

 

 

Signal Hill Parks & Recreation: Signal Hill Community Services Department 2175 Cherry Ave., 562-989-7330

Signal Hill Community services Department provides recreational/sports programs for children and teens, including basketball, PARK KIDS (drop-in after-school & Saturday recreation program for ages 6-12), Movie Madness (for teens), and KIDS KAMP (a state licensed child care center offering before- & after-school care and all day care for year-round and traditional track breaks). Programs are held at Signal Hill Park, 1780 E. Hill St., which features basketball courts and a community center. PARK KIDS also meets at Discovery Well Park, 2200 Temple Ave. (only on Saturday.). A number of day trips are offered for Senior Citizens, which leave from and return to the Signal Hill Library, 1770 E. Hill Street. Social/nutrition and transportation services and programs are also available for Senior Citizens who meet age and income eligibility requirements. 10 community parks (Reservoir, Signal Hill, Hilltop, Sunset View, Temple View, Discovery Well, Hillbrook, Raymond Arbor, Calbrisas, and Panorama) are available to area residents.

 

 

Rolling Hills Estates Recreation: Community Services Department 4045 Palos Verdes Dr. North, 310-377-1577

The Community Services Department plans and coordinates a variety of recreational, social and cultural activities including the annual Summer Swim Program at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, the Ernie Howlett Park Tennis Club (public), seasonal recreation programs, and the annual City Celebration, The Hills Are Alive 10K/5K Run-5K Walk, Tracy Austin Tennis Tournament, and Peninsula Holiday Parade. The department’s Equestrian division operates the Howlett Park Equestrian Center as well as the Municipal Stables and public park riding rings, and sponsors a variety of equestrian-related activities throughout the year. Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd, Rolling Hill Estate's main recreational facility, features four one-wall handball courts, multi-purpose athletic fields, a regulation basketball court, a sand volleyball court, picnic tables, barbecue pits, playground equipment, a 3/4-mile running track and a bicycle path. The park houses the Rolling Hills Estates Tennis Club, which hosts the annual Tracy Austin Doubles Tennis Tournament, and the Equestrian Center, which features three riding rings, a dressage area and grandstand, and multi-use trail. The Equestrian Center hosts local horse shows and is available to rent for private clinics, horse shows and other equestrian-related events. Highridge Park, at the corner of Crestridge and Highridge Roads, is a 10-1/2 acre facility with two regulation-size soccer fields, youth softball/baseball field, barbecue pits, restrooms, picnic tables, playground equipment, approximately one mile of running track with Par Course stations, and a multi-use trail. Chandler Park's facilities include an equestrian ring and over two acres of open grass field suitable for kite-flying, frisbee throwing, baseball, or an afternoon picnic. Parking is provided in the neighboring City Hall parking lot. Dapplegray Park, at the northwest corner of Palos Verdes Drive North and Palos Verdes Drive East, is a 1-1/2 acre equestrian facility containing a riding ring, a lunging ring, and a dressage area. It is also served by several bridle trails connected directly to its riding rings. Parking is available on Palos Verdes Drive East adjacent to the arena. Silver Spur Park, at the southwest corner of Silver Spur Road & Palos Verdes Drive North, is a 1/2 acre open grass field. Rockbluff Park, at the end of the Rockbluff Drive cul-de-sac, offers plenty of space, along with playground equipment and benches.

Hidden Hills Community Association provides recreational services in the community, including summer programs and classes, park maintenance, and trails/equestrian services. Two other groups also provide recreational opportunities. The Hidden Hills Tennis Club offers monthly Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, as well as sponsoring tournaments with local tennis clubs in the area. Annual Membership dues are $50 for singles and $75 for couples/families. The Hidden Hills Horsemen's Association, a nonprofit group, offers educational and social programs throughout the year, including gymkhanas, team penning, horse shows, group trail rides, riding clinics, seminars, and a horse veterinarian clinic every spring.
