The Los Angeles Unified School District educates nearly 750,000 students in grades K-12, with about half in the Elementary grades, 1/4 at the Middle School level, and the remainder in High School. Magnet programs serve just over 45,000 pupils, and about 4,300 students are enrolled in special education programs. Opportunity and continuation schools serve around 5,600 students. Children's centers enroll around 11,000 preschool- & primary school-aged children, and Community Adult Schools and Occupational/Skills Centers enroll nearly 200,000 post-secondary aged students. 326,893 students (43.8%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 703, 574 (94.2%) qualify for the compensatory education program. The district employs just over 67,000 staff, including nearly 36,180 teachers, about 5,300 other certified personnel, and nearly 26,000 classified (non-teaching) staff. The district maintains 693 schools, including 461 Elementary Schools, 81 Middle Schools, and 63 High Schools. The remainder is multi-level buildings, Continuation and Opportunity High Schools, Magnet Programs, Special Education facilities, Community Adult Schools, and Central Adult Senior High School. The district's 248 centers offer educational programs for infants and young children (102 children's centers & 4 infant programs), magnet programs (115 centers), primary centers (7), and newcomers centers (2). In addition, vocational programs serve high-school-aged students and older (5 Regional Occupational Centers, 6 Opportunity Centers, 5 Skills Centers, and a Business & Industry School).

The Beverly Hills Unified School District operates 6 schools, which serve 5,130 PreK-12th. grade students and employs 290 full-time classroom teachers, and 25 in Pupil Services. 4 schools are Elementary/Middle schools, 1 is a High school, and one is a Continuation program. 297 students (5.8%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 122 (2.4%) qualify for the compensatory education program. The district employs 848 classroom teachers, and 63 staff for pupil services. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented, and Special Needs students. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language and counseling. Federal and/or State funds are available to some or all of the district schools for the Economic Impact Aid-Limited English Proficient (EIA/LEP), School Improvement (SIP), and Title I programs. Some schools receive funds from the Technology Learning Grant. Many schools have business partners through the "Adopt-A-School" program and the PTA is active in each school. All of the district's teachers have Bachelor's degrees and many hold or are working towards advanced degrees as well. The district participates in the state's Class Reduction program for grades K-3, which aims for a class size of 20 at those grade levels. Curriculum at all levels includes the core academic subjects, as well as Art, Music, PE, and Technology. Middle school students begin Foreign Language instruction (French or Spanish), and electives including computers, vocal music, instrumental music, study skills, debate, art, and technical arts. Honors/AP classes are available to high school students, who may also choice electives including performing arts, television production, and computers. The high school participates in the accreditation program of the Western Association of Colleges & Schools (WASC). Special programs in the district include Outdoor Education, Presidential Classroom, Academic Decathlon, Youth in Government Day, and Education/Career Week.

Glendale Unified School District operates 32 schools, serving 29,433 PreK-12th. grade students, and employing over 2800 staff, including 1353 certified teachers, and 96 pupil services staff. 20 schools are elementary level (K-6), including 9 year round programs, 4 are Middle Schools, 5 are High Schools, including a continuation school, and 2 are special schools. 8,822 students (30%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 18,635 (63.3%) qualify for the compensatory education program. Services, programs, and personnel provide for special needs, gifted & talented, and limited English proficient (LEP) students. Specific programs available to GATE students include Invention Convention, Math Field Day, California Math League, High School Scholastic Bowl, Saturday Arts Academy, and National Current Events League. Support services, such as nursing, tutoring and counseling, are available to all students as needed. The curriculum includes the core academic subjects, as well as fine arts and vocational education. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are available at the high school level. Extracurricular activities are offered at all grade levels, with the majority at the middle and high school grades. State and/or Federal Categorical Funds are available to the schools for such programs as Limited English Proficient (LEP/EIA), School Improvement (SIP), Title I, Title VI, GATE, Special Education, and Drug Free Schools. The district operates several programs for "at-risk" students, including Healthy Start, Healthy Kids, and Operation School Bell.

Long Beach Unified School District, the third largest in California, operates 91 schools, mostly in Long Beach and Lakewood, serving 97,560 children from Kindergarten through 12th. Grade. 28,439 students (29.2%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 62,956 (64.5%) qualify for the compensatory education program. The district employs 4,533 classroom teachers, and 789 staff for pupil services. The district provides programs, services, and staff for special needs students, limited English proficient children/youths, and gifted students. 70% of high school graduates enter college. AP courses are offered at the high school level in subjects including biology, chemistry, calculus, economics, English literature, psychology, French, Spanish, European history, U.S. history, and U.S. government. All the district's high schools have earned accreditation from the Western Association of Colleges and Schools. The Office of Career/Vocational Education maintains career centers at each of the high schools. The district offers instrumental & vocal music, as well as band at all grade levels. Computer use and instruction is integrated into the curriculum at all grade levels, with computer labs and classroom computers available. Counseling and nursing services are available at all schools, either on a full- or part-time basis. Libraries and/or Media Centers support the academic programs in district schools. A variety of extracurricular activities are offered, with the majority available at the middle school and high school levels. A summer school tutorial program is mandatory for children in 3rd grade who are below grade level in reading, and children in 5th grade who fall below grade level standards in literacy and math. Eighth graders who fail 2 or more academic classes attend Long Beach Preparatory Academy for one year to prepare them for high school. High School Juniors whose writing ability is below district standards must take and pass a writing course prior to high school graduation.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District operates 16 schools, including 2 High Schools, 1 Continuation School, 1 Alternative School, 2 Middle Schools, and 10 Elementary Schools, with a district enrollment of 12,842 students. 1,611 students (12.5%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 1,828 (14.2%) qualify for the compensatory education program. Pasadena Unified School District operates 4 High Schools, 1 Continuation School, 3 Middle Schools, and 24 Elementary Schools, serving 22,269 students and employing 1,092 teachers, and 86 staff in pupil services (counseling, speech/language, etc.). 6,109 students (26.9%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 12,204 (53.8%) qualify for the compensatory education program. The district offers a number of Programs, both on its own and in conjunction with school partners and other organizations. The "Young and Healthy" project provides medical and dental care to low-income, uninsured children and youths. At the high school level, partnership academies, most emphasizing career exploration and preparation, include the Business & Technology Academy, Health Academy, Business/Finance, GeoSpace (math-oriented), and Computer Careers Academy. College preparation programs include the Puente Project, Upward Bound, and the California State University Los Angeles Partnership. AP and Honors courses in a variety of subjects are offered. A variety of extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to clubs to music & band, are available to high school and middle school students. At the middle school level, the curriculum emphasizes the core academic subjects, as well as art and music. Grant funded programs such as Project SEED (a science-oriented project) supplement the curriculum. In the elementary schools, Programs address student needs at individual schools, and some, such as the "Writing to Read" program, emphasize literacy in the primary grades. Many of the district's elementary schools use the Success for All Reading Program and MathWings curriculum. The school district offers its facilities for the Park District's after-school programs, and the YWCA's school-aged child care program. At all grade levels, the district offers Bilingual and ESL programs, Gifted & Talented Education (G.A.T.E.), and Special Education, including Early Childhood for special needs and "at-risk" preschoolers. The certified staff includes regular education teachers, special education teachers, and support and special subject staff in areas such as resource, inclusion, social work, adaptive PE, instrumental music, speech & language, and guidance.

Torrance Unified School District operates 30 schools, including 17 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 high schools (including 1 continuation program). 3,048 students (12.1%) are classified as Limited English Proficient, and 2,153 (8.5%) qualify for the compensatory education program. Counseling services (guidance and psychologists) are available to all students and remedial help/tutoring is available to "at-risk" children. Library and computer facilities and instruction are available at all grade levels. Extracurricular activities, such as band, chorus, sports, and clubs, are offered, with a majority at the middle- and high-school levels. All of the district's comprehensive high schools are accredited by the Western Association of Colleges & Schools (WASC). State and/or Federal Funds are available to each of the district schools for programs such as School Improvement, Mentor, Economic Aid/Limited English Proficient (EIA/ELP), Title I, and GATE (gifted & talented).
