Houston Independent School District operates 288 schools covering grades PK-12, which serve 202,449 students in Houston and some neighboring communities. 195 schools are elementary level (generally PK-5 or PK-6), 48 are middle schools (grades 5-8 or 6-8), 35 are high schools (grades 9-12), and the remainder are other grade configurations (e.g. PK-12, 6-12). Average class size, by grade at the elementary level (K-6), ranges from 20.5 to 23.5. Secondary class sizes range, by subject (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language) from 23.6-25.8. Student/teacher ratio is 16.8:1 (district-wide). The district employs 24,266 staff members, including 12,057 teachers, 2,596 professional support personnel, and 1,710 educational aides. 70.3% of teachers have a Bachelors Degree only, 27.3% have a Masters Degree. Per Pupil cost is $8,768. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented, and Special Needs students. Title I and "At-Risk" programs also serve a significant portion of the student population. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling.
