Recreational facilities in Houston include 56 community centers across the city, providing a variety of educational and recreational programs for all ages. Programs include the Mayor's After School Achievement Program (ASAP), the HPARD After-School Enrichment Program, summer youth programs, and leisure, sports, and fitness activities for adults and seniors. The Urban Foresters division has planted 25,284 trees through the 1% Set-Aside Tree Planting Program. Urban Foresters also partnered with Trees for Houston, a non-profit tree advocacy group, to initiate the NeighborWoods program. Other facilities include 8 golf courses including Memorial Park Golf Course and the First Tee Junior Golf Facility at F. M. Law Park, 39 municipal swimming pools, 13 Water Playgrounds, 3 staffed tennis centers and 78 neighborhood tennis courts, and over 100 miles of nature or hike and bike trails. The recreation department also manages and maintains the Japanese Garden and the Houston Garden Center. An $80 million bond issue approved in October 2001 provides for renovation of 75 existing parks, expansion and further development of 8 existing parks, general improvements to 25 parks, expansion of 3 linear parks along bayous, and construction of 3 new community centers and maintenance buildings. Other recent facilities include 3 skate parks opened since December 2003 and 2 dog parks opened since May 2004. Hermann Park, minutes from downtown Houston, is a cultural and recreational hub surrounded by the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, the Museum District and residential neighborhoods. Attractions inside Hermann Park include Hermann Park Golf Course, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Houston Zoo, the Museum of Natural Science, the IMAX Theatre, the Planetarium, the Japanese Gardens, and the Rose Garden. The $9.1 million Heart of the Park project, completed in 2004, covers 18.5 acres of Hermann Park's 445 total acres, and features in its center the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool, flanked by two pedestrian plazas that run between the Sam Houston Monument and Circle on the north and McGovern Lake ("Lake Overlook") on the south.

Recreational facilities in Baytown include 40+ parks. 32 parks feature picnic and playground areas, an additional 6 have a picnic area only. 21 parks have walking and biking trails, 19 feature sports fields and backstops, 26 offer basketball courts, 6 have tennis courts, and 2 feature sand volleyball courts. A number of parks have aquatic facilities, including 2 parks with free boat launch ramps, and 7 with free fishing piers and boat docks. NC Foote Pool, in N.C. Foote Park, 2428 West Main has a 100-person capacity and features a one-meter diving board, rinse shower, restrooms and a covered pavilion. Sports Complex Pool, at the Wayne Gray Sports Complex, 5200 East Road has a 150-person capacity and features two one-meter diving boards, a wading pool, pavilion, showers, restrooms and picnic tables. Baytown YMCA operates and staffs the pool facilities. The Sports Complex's indoor facilities, sports fields, and pool are available for rental at specified times. Roseland Spray Park, 100 Roseland Dr in Roseland Park, has a railroad theme with a number of water features. It is open at no charge from the first Sunday in April till the last Sunday in October. Baytown Community Center features an auditorium that can accommodate up to 500 people, and several meeting rooms, available to rent for private parties, club meetings, and commercial functions. The city's four pavilions all feature lights, electricity, and restrooms. 2 pavilions are indoor and offer tables/chairs, kitchenettes and air conditioning, the 2 open-air pavilions feature picnic tables. All are available for rental year round. Bicentennial Park Amphitheater & Gazebo, 119 Lee Drive, whose stage features electricity and lights, is located in a large open area and hosts a number of city festivals, including the annual Fourth of July celebration. Baytown offers sports programs for people of all ages and abilities, including ASA, TAAF, and USSSA sanctioned softball, flag football, track and tennis teams. Youth sports organizations, in conjunction with the City of Baytown, offer girls softball, baseball, soccer and basketball. Baytown also co-sponsors several events for the Area 4 Special Olympics, as well as the Senior Olympics and Softball programs. Other special events include the Daddy & Me Valentines Day Dance, July 4th activities, Baytown Arts and Crafts Show, Baytown Halloween Carnival and Company Cup Events (Golf, Tennis & Softball Tournaments, Gator Bike Ride, Bowling, 5K Run/Walk), Fun Time Fridayz, Santa's Helpers and Cookies With Santa.

Recreational facilities in Bellaire include 13 parks, which offer a variety of amenities. All parks feature a playground area, and most have a picnic area as well. Some parks have an open green space area. Several parks feature tennis courts (some lighted), and adult and youth baseball fields, including Little League (some lighted), 2 parks (Bellaire & Evergreen, at 4500 Evergreen) feature a neighborhood swimming pool. Bellaire Park, 5113 Laurel also contains the Civic Center, auditorium & meeting rooms, Bellaire Recreation Center, gazebo, picnic area with BBQ pit, and a jogging trail. Horn Field, Ave. B at Holly, offers youth soccer fields and a T-Ball Field. Paseo Park, on Bellaire Blvd., features a historical trolley, Bellaire Blvd. esplanade and Special Event Area. Russ Pitman Park, 7112 Newcastle, is nature-themed, with a Nature Discovery Center, self-guided nature trail, and aviary. The park also has a shaded picnic area, pavilions, and Henshaw House. Pin Oak Field, 5801 West Loop South, features a lighted soccer/football field, jogging track, and tennis/basketball courts.Elaine Wood Therapy Pool (at Evergreen Park) is open for water therapy sessions and lap swimming. Evergreen Pool offers open swim, and hosts swim meets periodically. Bellaire Pool is open during the summer with a season or 20-swim pass, or on a daily admission fee basis. Most classes and programs are held at the Bellaire Recreation Center or the auditorium or meeting rooms in the Civic Center. Specialty Summer Camps are held at the Bellaire Optimist Club Scout House (at Feld Park, 6406 Avenue B). Classes and programs for all ages include Karate American, Sports and Fitness. Youth Classes include Beginner Junior Golf, Mad Science, Cheerleading, Beginning Break Dancing, Mom & Me (Fitness), Little Folks Tots (Music/Movement), Little Folks Fitness, Pet Care for Kids, Private Music Lessons, Beginning/Advanced/Tournament Chess. Adult Classes include Accent Reduction for Non-Natives, Ballroom Dance, Line Dance, Spanish, Marvelous Makeovers, and Weight Watchers. The Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department operates 4 recreational centers, 6 athletic complexes, 14 parks, 24 ball fields, an outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool with diving well, 6 lighted tennis courts, 2 outdoor racquetball courts, a sand volleyball court, a gym featuring indoor racquetball courts, a full service weight room and a full size basketball court. Facilities at the parks include BBQ grills, picnic tables, playground equipment, basketball courts, volleyball courts, restrooms, and water fountains.  Recreation programs include adult softball and volleyball leagues, and classes in gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, Pilates, ladies low impact aerobics, and Dog Obedience (Novice & Basic). Most programs, including a Community Center Preschool, are held at the Community Center, 610 E. San Augustine. Others classes, such as yoga, meet at the Claude Burgess Recreation Center, 4200 Kalwick. TNT Dynamite Cheer, a noncompetitive cheerleading class, meets at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, 500 W. 13th St. USA Tennis 1-2-3, Art Park Dancers, and The S.A.F.E. Spot, for children ages 9-13, are among other programs offered. Senior adult activities, including arts & crafts, and bridge classes, card and board games, Federal Meals Program, Senior Olympics, trips, special events, and group meetings (e.g. AARP) are held at the E.M. Maxwell Adult Center, 1201 Center St, 281-478-7276. The Battleground at Deer Park 1600 Georgia Deer Park, Texas 77536 281-478-4653 is a "complete golfing facility specializing in tournaments and corporate outings." The facility features a lighted driving range, 3 regulation practice holes, pro shop, professional instruction, tournaments, and banquet/meeting Rooms. Walkers are allowed and there is a dress code. The Battlefield is operated separately from the Parks and Recreation Department facilities.

Adult Programs & activities focus on fitness and sports, including Step Aerobics, Water Aerobics, Jazzercise, Adult Softball Leagues, Spookfest Softball Tournament, and Flag Football League. Senior Citizen programs include Classes: Tai Chi, Exercise, Swiss Ball Exercise, Pinochle, Line Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, Beginning Tap Dance, and Intermediate Tap Dance Classes, Bible Study, Bridge Club, Lunch Program, Blood Pressure Checks. A number of trips and events for seniors are held throughout the year.

Recreational facilities in La Porte include 19 parks, featuring baseball, softball, soccer and football fields, 3 Recreation Centers, bicycle/pedestrian/exercise/nature trails, a senior center, a special populations center, a 350,000 gallon Wave Pool, a membership-based Recreation & Fitness Center (individual & family memberships available to residents & non-residents), a bayside Sylvan Beach Pavilion, two bayside parks with fishing piers, a rodeo/open riding arena, and four neighborhood swimming pools. Almost all parks have playground equipment, many offer a picnic area as well. The recreation centers focus on after-school programs, with a variety of activities and special events during the school year and field trips in the summer. Adult sports leagues are offered for volleyball, softball, basketball and flag football. Individuals with special needs can participate in the S.P.O.R.T. program, a year round program offering day camps in the summer and various school year programs. The school year program for elementary age children focuses on fine and gross motor activities, sports, and games. The Teen/Adult After School/Work Program activities include fine and gross motor activities, drama, life skills, physical fitness and Special Olympics practice. The Adult Day Program: offers physical fitness training, independence skill training, community service projects, arts & crafts, ceramics, field trips, and life skills activities. Individuals ages 8 & up can also participate in Special Olympics. All 3 programs are geared to individuals who can function in a group setting independently. An assessment with the Recreation Therapist is required to evaluate new participants for all programs. The City of La Porte Senior Services Center provides year-round recreational, fitness, nutritional (hot lunch) and educational programs for adults 60 years of age and older, and their spouses. Transportation is available to and from the center located in the La Porte Recreation & Fitness Center. Home-bound individuals can also receive hot lunch service. Special activities offered throughout the year include blood pressure checks, hearing, cataract and glaucoma screenings, trips/excursions, weekly bingo, Social Security and Medicare assistance, shopping trips, senior dances, and income tax help.

Friendship Park is sports-oriented, with 5 soccer fields, 3 backstops, a concession stand, and a basketball court. Rex Meador Park also focuses on sports, with basketball courts, sand volleyball court, baseball backstops, and aluminum bleachers, as well as a covered pavilion w/electricity and trails. Baybrook Park offers tennis and basketball courts. Pine Gully Park offers a 1000’ fishing pier on Galveston Bay and contains a Karawankawa Indians camp site, wetlands, wooded area, and nature trails. McHale, Miramar, Robinson and Wildwood Parks are all on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Birding Trail, McHale Park has an observation deck for bird watching. Hester Garden Park and Pine Gully Parks also offer bird-watching opportunities. City Pool/Miramar Park has granite trails connecting to the Hike & Bike System and features a 30' water slide, 2 pools, volleyball, showers, concession stand, covered pavilion w/electricity and 90-Hole Disc Golf course. The park hosts a swim team. Robinson Park is a wooded area, with hiking trails, foot bridge, wetlands, gazebo, benches, and parking. Wildwood Park features an open area, bayou, and wetlands. Seabrook Wildlife Refuge & Park, adjacent to Wildwood Park, is an undeveloped nature site (except for a few benches and a small parking area), with trails for bird watching and observing other wildlife in their natural habitat. Community House, a historic building with hardwood floors, functions as a meeting facility with a kitchen and stage area, and is available for rental.
