Dallas Independent School District operates 233 schools covering grades PK-12, which serve 160,969 students in Dallas and surrounding communities. 198 schools are elementary level (generally grades PK-5 or PK-6), 49 are middle schools (generally grades 6-8 or 7-8) and 38 are high schools (generally grades 9-12). Average class size, by grade at the elementary level (K-6), ranges from 19 to 23. Secondary class sizes range, by subject (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language) from 15-19. Student/teacher ratio is 15.6:1 (district-wide). The district employs 19,359 staff members, including 10,324 teachers, 2,158 professional support personnel, and 1,691 educational aides. 67% of teachers have a Bachelors Degree only, 30% have a Masters Degree. Per Pupil cost is $7,749. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented, and Special Needs students. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling.
