Cambridge

Recreational facilities in Cambridge include about 75 parks, including 3 with facilities for street hockey and one featuring a track, several athletic fields, including one designed for football, tot lots, swimming pools, an ice skating rink and a municipal golf course. The parks collectively feature playgrounds, water play areas, foot/bike paths, Little League baseball diamonds, basketball & tennis courts, and soccer & softball fields. In addition 12 public schools offer recreational facilities, including playgrounds and water play areas. Tobin School also offers a basketball court. 55-acre Mayor Thomas W. Danehy Park, a former landfill, hosts a number of youth and adult athletic leagues, and citywide special events such as Danehy Park Family Day. The War Memorial, which serves as the physical education facility at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, features 3 swimming pools, a gym with a full-size regulation basketball court and several side courts, weight room and field house housing volleyball, basketball and indoor/outdoor tennis courts. The facility provides Recreation Division classes and activities for adults and children, including Saturday children's classes such as swimming, tennis, and gymnastics and adult activities such as tennis instruction, aqua aerobics, and pickup volleyball. Gold Star Pool, the only city-owned outdoor pool, is open for nine weeks during the summer. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation (MDC), 617-727-4708, operates the other 2 aquatic facilities in Cambridge, Magazine Beach and McCrehan Pool. Adult sports programs include leagues & teams for basketball and softball; seasonal youth programs include baseball & basketball camps. Fitness/exercise classes are available for adults and senior adults, who can also participate in line dancing classes. The Summer Playgrounds program offers about 2 dozen staffed playground sites offering arts & crafts & game activities to children from 9-3:30 weekdays (with a noon-time half hour break). About 8 sites also offer the Summer Food Service Program, providing a free lunch from 11:30-Noon weekdays. 11 community schools host summer camp programs, open from late June or early July through Mid-August for elementary school children (general age ranges of 5-12, 2 programs are open to preschoolers). Special needs programs include Camp Rainbow, open weekdays from 9-3 in July & August for children age 6 & up (transportation is provided), Saturday Program at Gately Youth Center from 9-3 for age 6 & up, offering swimming, arts & crafts, physical fitness training and various seasonal sports activities, and the Young Adult Evening Program for age 14 & up on TW eves, offering activities such as bowling, swimming and physical fitness (transportation is provided). During the school year, Gately Youth Center offers an after school program on MW from 2-5 for children/youth ages 6-13, featuring arts & crafts, homework assistance and recreational activities. The Department of Public Works physically maintains most of the parks, while the Human Services Department's Recreation Division programs activities and events. Richard) Park, adjacent to Hosmer Elementary School, also is heavily used by the school and recreation departments and youth organizations, and features a newly built playground area with the most modern and safe apparatus currently available. 4.2 acre Saltonstall Park, behind the Town Administration Building, adds green space and park benches to the downtown area and is used by residents and the Watertown Boys and Girls Club. The park hosts community events such as Faire on the Square, Outdoor Summer Concert Series, 9/11 Remembrance and Memorial Day Festivities. Handicapped-accessible features include a handicap swing for preschoolers, and numerous ramps for wheel chair access to the park. Bathrooms are available in the Town Hall Building. 1.2 acre Sullivan Playground is largely a neighborhood facility including 1 handicapped-accessible swing among its play equipment. John A.
