The Lawrence Recreation department offers sports and recreation programs for youth, teens and adults throughout the year. February activities include Supervised Open Gym at Guilmette School and South Lawrence East School. The city is home to Lawrence Heritage State Park, 1 Jackson St, 978-794-1655, whose Visitors Center offers interactive exhibits about the history of Lawrence; 5-acre Pemberton Park, off Canal Street near the Central Bridge, which provides opportunities for fishing and boating, and features walking trails, lighting and benches; and Lawrence Riverfront State Park, Eaton & Everett Streets, which offers tennis, basketball, street hockey courts; wooded walking trails; children’s play area and a sledding hill. The park also offers free band concerts, lectures, drama performances, children’s events, games, sailing lessons, special events and guided tours (by reservation). Bashara Boathouse offers summer sailing & instruction through the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program, 978-681-8675. Lawrence Boys & Girls Club, located at 2 sites in Lawrence (136 Water St, 978-683-2747 & 71 Duckett Ave, 978-691-5167) provides educational, recreational, fine arts, character development, health/life skills and nutritional programs, along with special events such as holiday parties and excursions. YWCA of Greater Lawrence, 38 Lawrence St, 978-687-0331, offers an early childhood program, co-ed after school activities, sports & aquatics, gender specific programs for girls and women's services including transitional housing, health advocacy, and assistance for victims of domestic violence. Lynn Parks and Recreation is a division of the Lynn Department of Public Works and provides year-round recreational programs for all ages including sports clinics, park programs, recreational activities and entertainment outings. Facilities include 9 parks, 20 playgrounds, 5 athletic fields, Lynn Commons, Harbor Landing, Camp Kiwanis and Briarcliff Lodge Boat Ramp. 9 of the playgrounds feature tennis and/or basketball courts. Recreational programs include a Spring Tennis Clinic, held at Gowdy Park, Baseball & Softball Clinic & Swim Program (Open Swim), both meeting at Lynn Tech Field House and a Ski & Snowboard Program, held at Bradford Ski Area (in Bradford). Haverhill Parks and Recreation provides a variety of recreational programs for the city, and oversees town recreational facilities. The Summer Day Program, which meets at Bradford Elementary School and is run in 2-week sessions from 7:30-4:30 M-F for school age children, offers activities such as swimming, fishing sports, arts & crafts, and field trips. Lunch is provided, along with transportation to and from designated bus stops. The Boating Day Program, held at Lake Saltonstall (Plug Pond), offers hands-on instruction for sailing, rowing and canoeing, as well as safety on and in the water. The Learn-to-Fish program is also held there and Plug Pond is available during the summer for swimming, with lifeguards and bathroom facilities on site. Carriage Way houses the directory for the building and park areas in general, as well as the Park's horse drawn carriage. Kidstown Playground features wooden play structures and sand areas, including a toddler friendly play area. 1-acre Goodno Pond offers fishing for children with species including sunfish and yellow perch (adults with a state fishing license can also use the pond). A 1.8 mile exercise trail winds through woods, fields, and along existing roadways. An Activities Field provides an open area resembling a pasture or haying field. A Community Gardens provides plots for a nominal fee and on a first-come, first-served basis where families can grow vegetables and flowers. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including cottontail rabbits, beaver, coyote, whitetail deer, and grey squirrels and is a good spot for bird watching of both resident and migrating species. The Children's Barn (The Old Stable) allows visitors to view domestic farm animals housed in an historic farm building. Park staff offer structured and informal talks at the elementary school level about animal husbandry and the uses of a barn in the 19th century. Whipple Hill, an undisturbed forest, offers space for quiet recreational pursuits, such as walks, exercise or nature study. Recreation programs in Marblehead include tennis, sailing, playground programs, arts and crafts, piano, science (Know Atom) classes, yoga, basketball, lacrosse, fencing, badminton, adult volleyball, skiing and a youth challenge program especially for teenagers. Summer programs for elementary/middle school age children include Football & Boy's Lacrosse Clinics, as well as a Badminton/Soccer camp. A variety of privately organized sport activities are available to residents. Most indoor programs meet at the Marblehead Community Center, which includes a wood workshop, gym, kitchen and dining room. Outdoor program locations include Marblehead High School Fields and Salem State College (ice skating). Recreation facilities include Devereux & Riverhead Beaches, open during the summer, Gerry & Bud Orne Playgrounds and two parks (Crocker and Chandler Hovey, location of Marblehead Lighthouse). Devereux Beach and Crocker Park each feature pavilions, and Gerry Playground offers a picnic area. Ipswich Recreation & Human Services Department offers programs/activities for all ages. Children's programs include summer playground and day camp activities; swim, tennis, and golf lessons; field trips, sand sculpture event; after school programs at Town Hall; learn to ski program, February and April school break activities and after school golf lessons at Rowley Country Club. Teens can participate in a summer golf program at Ipswich Country Club, adventure days, Workreation (job training/aide program); after school programs/homework time; ski program, dances & concerts, drop-in teen center activities, peer leadership training, trips, small group initiatives, community service opportunities and fund-raising projects. Adult Programs include table tennis, men's volleyball, golf, parenting classes, coaching clinics, sewing classes, bridge lessons, intervention and family support. Senior Citizens are offered day trips to North Shore sites (nominal bus fees, sign-ups at Senior Center in Town Hall); help with outdoor chores (raking and shoveling) from supervised volunteer teens; and intergenerational social events with children and/or teens. The Ipswich Teen Center, on the ground floor of the Town Hall, is open (with an admission fee) for drop in activities, such as pool, air hockey, foosball, computer activities, board games, and monitored TV, for grades 6-8 on Friday evenings, along with other evenings that are "high school only". The center also hosts various special events. Community Events include Halloween parade and program, Holiday parade and program, July 4 parade and program, summer evening picnics/concerts. Recreational facilities in Ipswich include Crane Beach on Argilla Rd, which features (in-season) lifeguards and rangers, bike rack, bathhouses (with toilets and changing area), outdoor showers, picnic tables, Crane Beach Store (with refreshments and merchandise), drinking fountains (outside the bathhouses), information kiosk, and transportation for mobility-impaired and challenged visitors. In the off-season: portable toilets (outside the bathhouses) are available. 5.5 miles of trails, part of the Bay Circuit Trail, surround the beach and offer hiking of moderate difficulty. Crane Beach's hosts an annual sand sculpture competition (Sandblast!) every August.
