Boston Public Schools educates 55,080 students in grades PK-12, housed in 138 buildings across the city. Grade configurations are PK-1 (8), PK-5 (37), K-5 (28), K-7 (1), K-8 (6), PK-8 (4), PK-12 (2), 6-8 (17), 6-12 (1), 7-12 (3) and 9-12 (29). 18.3% of district students are classified as Limited English Proficient and 19.3% are enrolled in Special Education programs. The district employs 4,625 teachers, including 4,110 in core academic areas, 89.8% of whom are rated "highly qualified". District student/teacher ratio is 12.4:1. Per-pupil cost (district) is $12,872 (2005). A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP) and Special Needs students. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling. A number of elementary schools offer before- and/or after-school care; some are district-run and others are through various school partners such as the YMCA. The Boston after School & Beyond Initiative is also focused on after-school educational & recreational programs for children and teens.
