Recreational facilities in Howard County include Bain Center in Columbia, Glenwood Community Center in Cooksville, Cedar Lane Park in Columbia, Centennial Park in Ellicott City, Rockburn Branch Park in Elkridge, Western Regional Park in Woodbine, Savage and Guilford Parks in Savage, Schooley Mill Park in Highland and Worthington Park Dog Park. The parks collectively feature historic areas/sites, playgrounds, benches, drinking fountains, natural areas, parking, pathways, picnic shelters, picnic tables and grills, pavilions, natural areas, hiking trails, restrooms, pay phones, vending machines, basketball, tennis & sand volleyball courts (some lighted), horseshoe pits, multi-purpose fields (some lighted), racquetball/handball courts, athletic fields (baseball/softball, soccer/football, some lighted), bleacher seating, press boxes, and concession stands. Recreation classes/activities encompass the areas of swimming/aquatics, heritage (historical programs), teen-oriented, grant programs, special events, outdoor recreation, community sports, county leagues (adult soccer, adult & youth sports), fitness/wellness/adult football, youth instructional sports, martial arts/fencing/preschool sports, golf & tennis, sports/health events, preschool, senior citizen, creative arts, and specialty/enrichment. Recreation Activity Rooms (Licensed child care, 410-313-3706) are located in Bellows Spring, Bushy Park, Dayton Oaks, Elkridge, Forest Ridge, Fulton, Gorman Crossing, Hollifield Station, Rockburn, Triadelphia Ridge, and Veterans elementary schools; Bonnie Branch, Ellicott Mills, Folly Quarter and Mount View middle schools; and River Hill High School. The rooms are used for Recreational Licensed Child Care, after-school and weekend activities. Therapeutic Recreation programs for elementary school age children, teens, and adults, are offered; many of them meet at Cedar Lane School or Cedar Lane Recreation Center. Ellicott City Recreation: Howard County Recreation & Parks

Recreational facilities in Ellicott City include 325 acre, county owned and operated, Centennial Park. The park features Baseball/Softball Fields, Volleyball, Basketball & Tennis Courts, Hiking Trails, Picnic Areas, Pavilions, Playgrounds, Drinking Fountains, Rest Rooms and Parking. The south area, 10,000 Route 108, also features a 54-acre lake, a 2.4 mile pathway (Lake Loop), a natural area, an amphitheater that hosts concerts, benches, a boat house, a boat launching ramp, a handicapped accessible boat dock area with 2 handicapped accessible parking spaces nearby, a general store, and a pay phone. Boats can be rented from May through August, and private boats are allowed on the lake, by permit. Fishing is also permitted, with a license. The west area, 4651 Centennial Lane, features lighted Baseball/Softball Fields & Multi-Purpose Fields for league play and Tournament Tennis & Volleyball Courts. Pavilion located in this section are of varying sizes and are all available to rent (410-313-4682); the small pavilions have grills and can accommodate up to 40 people; a medium pavilion can hold up to 115 people and has a fireplace and electricity; and the large group pavilion can accommodate about 300 people. The north area, 9801 Old Annapolis Road, offers a Skate Spot and Racquetball Courts. The east area, 4800 Woodland Road, features Horseshoe Pits and houses the large pavilion. Ellicott City also features a Historic District (2711 Maryland Ave, Ellicott City MS 21043, 410-465-8500), that houses several historic structures, most open on Sat. & Sun. afternoons from 1-4 PM. The Heritage Orientation Center, open daily from 11 AM–4 PM and located behind the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin in the county’s first Court Records building, houses exhibits on 18th and 19th Century milling techniques, floods of Ellicott Mills, and the Ellicott Family. Thomas Isaac Log Cabin, built circa 1780 as a settler's home, was reconstructed on the present site in the late 20th century; and features authentically costumed historians and artisans to inform visitors about the settlement and development of the region. B&O Railroad Station, built in 1830-31 and in services until 1972, is now a living history museum with programs and exhibits about the development of transportation in America and the station's role in historic events of the 19th & 20th centuries. Ellicott City Colored School, built at 8683 Frederick Road in 1880 as the first public school for black children in Howard County and in use until the early 1950s, was bought by the county and restored in 1995 to house a genealogical resource center and a museum chronicling the history of African Americans in Howard County; the schoolhouse is open from April through October. Ellicott City Firehouse Museum, Main St. and Church St, is located in the county's first firehouse, and houses a wide array of fire apparatus, model toys, and a visual history of Howard County’s Volunteer Fire Department; this museum is open from April through December. Patapsco Female Institute, founded in 1837 as a finishing school for young women, was built in a Greek revival style; its stabilized ruins are open for tours and available for special events including weddings, receptions, camps and open-air theatre. The park's visitor center is located at Mt. Ida, 3691 Sarah's Lane. Waverly Mansion, built by Nathan Dorsey, son of Colonel John Dorsey (one of the "founding families" of Maryland), in the mid-1700s, is on the National Register of Historic Places; the restored mansion, furnished with period antiques, is open for special programs and tours by appointment, and is available for weddings, parties, and meetings.

Cedar Lane Park features a Natural Area, Pathways, Playgrounds, Pavilions (available to rent, 410-313-4682), Benches, Picnic Shelters, Picnic Tables and Grills, Vending Machines, Drinking Fountains, Rest Rooms, and Parking. The east area of the park offers Basketball, Tennis & Racquetball/Handball Courts, Horseshoe Pits, and Multi-Purpose Fields. The west part of the park houses the Park Office, and features lighted Baseball/Softball & Multi-Purpose Fields (all available by permit) with bleacher seating & rental press boxes, and Sand Volleyball Courts.

 

 

Elkridge Recreation: Howard County Recreation & Parks

Recreational facilities in Elkridge include county owned and operated, 450-acre, Rockburn Branch Park, which has an East Section located at 5400 Landing Rd and a West Section located at 6105 Rockburn Branch Park Rd. The park features nature trails, picnic tables and cooking grills, sports fields (some lighted), basketball & tennis courts, playgrounds, and a lighted pavilion equipped with picnic tables, a large charcoal grill, and a patio (maximum capacity of 90, available to rent, 410-313-4682). The softball/baseball and multi-purpose (soccer/football) fields are available by permit (410-313-4626). The north area of the park houses the park office and offers benches, a concession stand, a drinking fountain, a pay telephone, rest rooms, and parking; the south area includes the pavilion, with a pay telephone, and rest rooms easily accessible. The 4.25 mile nature trail traverses scenic woodlands, fresh water marshes, and stream valleys. Rockburn Branch Park also houses Pfeiffer’s Corner School House, a one-room structure originally built in 1883 and restored in its present location at 6109 Rockburn Branch Park Road and serves as a historic exhibit in conjunction with the adjacent Clover Hill restoration, both of which can be used for demonstration classes, interpretive tours, and small meetings.

 

 

Highland Recreation: Schooley Mill Park 12975 Hall Shop Road Highland MD 410-313-4700

Recreational facilities in Highland include county owned and operated, 192-acre, Schooley Mill Park, which features softball, baseball, football, & soccer fields, tennis, basketball & volleyball courts, an equestrian ring, multi-purpose fields, natural areas, hiking trails, picnic tables & grills, restrooms and parking. The park offers a variety of habitats including woodlands, wetlands, a sediment pond, secondary growth areas, and meadows. Indoor facilities include a meeting room, a multi-purpose room, and a conference room, all of which are available to rent (410-313-4682). Sports fields are available by permit. The park also features an Equestrian Ring (410-313-4626), available on a first-come, first-served basis except when lessons or tournaments are scheduled. The park's picnic facilities are also on a first-come, first-served basis. The park also houses The James Marlow House, built circa 1840, as a two-story structure with one room on each floor that is a prototype of rural, farm-style architecture in Howard County. The County has restored the house to its post Civil War era configuration except for interior enrichments of 1924, which have been retained.

 

 

Savage Recreation: Savage Park near Vollmerhausen Rd & Jefferson St Savage MD 410-313-4700

Recreational facilities in Savage include county owned and operated, 270 acre, Savage Park, which features softball/baseball and multi-purpose fields (by permit, priority for sports leagues and community groups, 410-313-4736), lighted tennis courts, volleyball & basketball courts, playground, natural areas, picnic tables and cooking grills, benches, drinking fountain, hiking trails, horseshoe pits, lighted large pavilion with grill (accommodates up to 100 people, available for rental, which includes use of a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits), rest rooms, and parking. Guilford Park, a county facility also located nearby in Savage, features a picnic pavilion (also available to rent, 410-313-4682) that accommodates up to 60 people. Historic places in Savage include Baldwin Commons, which resembles an old fashioned village green and is located next to Carroll Baldwin Hall, which the Savage Manufacturing Company built in 1922 as a community hall; Bollman Truss Bridge, built in 1869 and moved to Savage in 1887 (the last remaining bridge of its type); Savage Mill, a renovated cotton mill built in the 1800's that features arts, crafts, antiques, historical displays, restaurants, and specialty shops; .8 mile Wincopin Trails Hiking Trails a .8 mile trail, level enough for strollers and bicycles, that starts at Bollman Truss Bridge and ends just past the stone dam abutments near the Middle and Little Patuxent rivers; Wincopin Neck Trails, natural surface trails with some steep slopes; and 1.4 mile Savage Loop Trail, which has some rocky, downhill terrain and follows the Little Patuxent River, connecting with the Patuxent Branch Trail at the north end, and meeting up with the mill race along the Middle Patuxent River at Savage Mill on the south.

Glenwood Community Center, located in the western part of the county, houses offices of the Departments of Recreation & Parks, Health, and Police, as well as the Office on Aging; the facility features a fitness room, commercial kitchen, double gym, pre-school classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, and a senior activity room.
