Newton County Public Schools operates 21 schools covering grades PK-12, which serve 17,928 students in the communities of Covington, Mansfield, and Oxford, and any unincorporated areas. 12 schools are elementary level (PK-5), 4 are middle schools (6-8), 2 are middle/high schools (6-12) and 3 are high schools (9-12). Student/teacher ratio is 15:1 (district-wide). The district employs 1,229 classroom teachers, 192 support personnel, and 70 administrators. 49% of teachers have a Bachelors Degree only, 41% have a Masters Degree. Per Pupil cost is $7,007. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented and Special Needs students. 1.9% of students are enrolled in the English to Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) program, 13.4% receive Special Education services, 9.2% are enrolled in Gifted Education programs. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling.
