DeKalb County's Parks and Recreation Department maintains a park system which includes 130 parks offering about 6,000 acres of parkland and open space, including picnic areas and trails, playgrounds, golf courses, tennis & basketball courts, pavilions, ball fields and recreation centers. The county parks and recreation department has numerous facilities in the City of Atlanta, and Recreation Centers in Lithonia, Scottdale, Decatur and Tucker. Decatur also is home to the Mason Mill Center for Seniors & Disabled, 1340-B McConnell Dr, 404-679-1349 and DeKalb Tennis Center, 1400 McConnell Dr, 404-325-2520. Lithonia is home to the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, 3787 Klondike Rd, 770-484-3060 and Brook Run Skate Park, 770-394-5703 or 770-394-5705.

Recreational facilities in Decatur include Decatur & Ebster Recreation Centers, both of which feature classrooms, gyms, and conference rooms (all available for rental, along with staff available for special events). Decatur Recreation Center also offers a social room and kitchen. Outdoor facilities include a dog park and 5 parks (Ebster, Glenlake, McKoy, Mead and Oakhurst), which collectively feature pavilions, picnic tables, grills, swimming pools, playgrounds, tennis courts, soccer & baseball fields, basketball & volleyball courts, restrooms, trash bins and parking lots. McKoy Park also houses a softball field. Recreational activities include children/youth programs such as after-school recreational activities and tutoring (21st century learning center grant) at local schools for elementary/middle school students, holiday & school break programs, swimming (recreational & instructional), summer day camps, active living program (promote outdoor activities), tennis teams/lessons, and senior citizen programs such as travel adventures, billiards, bowling, bridge, line dance, garden club, hiking and Red Hat Society. DeKalb County owned and/or operated facilities include 2 recreation centers (Midway-3181 Midway Rd., 404-286-3328; N. H. Scott III-2230 Tilson Rd., 404-244-4891), Truelove Softball Complex, 3510 Oakvale Rd, 10 parks and Mason Mill Center for Special Populations, 1400 McConnell Dr., 404-679-5917, which also houses a recreation center. 2 schools (Atherton, 1674 Atherton Dr and Rehoboth, 2652 Lawrenceville Hwy) also allow recreational use of their facilities. The park and school facilities collectively feature multi-use fields, baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields, multi-use courts, tennis & basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, lakes, trails and swimming pools open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals.

Recreational facilities in Stone Mountain include Gwinnett County owned and/or operated DeShong Park, Yellow River Park and Mountain Park Aquatic Center. DeShong Park, 2859 N DeShong Rd, 770-978-5271, features 24 developed acres including an open play area, multi-purpose trail, lawn court area with horseshoe pits, chess and checker tables, teen area with half-court basketball courts and 11,000 square-foot skate complex with streetscape elements, and 2 playgrounds, one with swings and climbing structures, and the other with play structures. 18-acre Mountain Park Aquatic Center, 1063 Rockbridge Rd, 770-564-3060 (General, Program, Building Rental Info), 770-564-4650 (Aquatics Center Info), features 3 pools, including a 25-yard by 25-meter indoor competition/lap pool, an indoor instructional pool, and an outdoor leisure pool, 2 giant slides, a rain bucket, water sprays, a bubble bench, a lazy river and other play features, along with a 6,000-square-foot activity building (available for rental) that hosts a variety of programs and classes. Yellow River Park, 3232 Juhan Rd, 770-814-4920 (General, Program Info), 770-978-5270 (Trail Info) is a mostly wooded park with several different types of forests, including upland deciduous, traditional pine, and mixed pine and hardwood. The park features 13 miles of winding mountain bike, hiking and horse trails through the woods above the Yellow River. DeKalb County owned and/or operated facilities in Stone Mountain include 6 parks (Biffle, Hairston, Hidden Acres, Oak Creek, Wade/Walker) and Smokerise School. The facilities collectively feature multi-use fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, trails and lakes. Smokerise School, 1991 Silver Hill Rd., also offers a basketball court and a multi-use court. 177-acre Wade/Walker Park, 5585 Rockbridge Rd, also features street hockey facilities, baseball, softball, football and soccer fields, tennis courts and a swimming pool open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals.

Recreational activities in Chamblee include summer day camps for children, youth & adult sports, fitness classes and special events such as the annual Chamblee Road Race to benefit Special Olympics. Recreational facilities include 6 parks (Keswick, Clairmont, Huntley Hills, Shallowford, Village and Peachtree), which collectively feature walking trails/paths, picnic tables/shelters and playgrounds/tot lots/open play areas/fields. Several of the playgrounds are handicapped accessible. Keswick Park features a dog park (behind the full-size adult softball field), tee-ball field, soccer field, multi-purpose field, tennis courts, and outdoor basketball court, as well as a 3,500 square foot community building available for rental. Clairmont Park sits between the Gordon Acres and Clairmont Hills neighborhoods, with facilities for the large number of senior citizens and young children in those areas. Huntley Hills Park features a creek spanned with a steel bridge leading into a "Butterfly Garden" designed, planted, and maintained by neighborhood volunteers. Peachtree Park, adjacent to City Hall, features trees, benches and a covered gazebo and functions as a city square of sorts. DeKalb County owned and/or operated facilities include 7-acre Georgian Hills Park, 2800 Georgian Dr. E., which features a baseball field, multi-use field, basketball court, multi-use court, playground, and picnic area.

Recreation facilities in Lithonia include 2 county-owned and/or operated Recreation Centers, Davidson-Arabia Mountain/Preserve, Southeast Athletic Complex, and several parks. The parks collectively feature multi-use fields & courts, tennis courts, baseball, softball, football & soccer fields, basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, trails Lithonia Park features an outdoor swimming pool open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals. Lucious Sanders Park/Recreation Center, 2484 Bruce St, 770-482-0408, is a 2-acre facility, and Browns Mill Park/Recreation Center, 5101 Browns Mill Rd, 770-593-5874, encompasses 54 acres. 265-acre Mystery Valley Golf Course, 6100 Shadowrock Rd, features a golf course and lake. 65-acre Redan Park, 1745 Phillips Rd, offers a disc golf course. 535-acre Davidson-Arabia Mountain/Preserve, 3787 Klondike Rd., features a lake and trails.

Recreational facilities in Scottdale include 2 county owned/operated recreation centers (Tobie Grant, Hamilton) and 4 parks (Cedar, Montreal, Stoneview, Washington). Tobie Grant Recreation Center features an outdoor swimming pool open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals. The recreation centers and parks collectively feature multi-use fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, trails, multi-use courts, basketball courts, and softball fields. Henderson Park, 2803 Henderson Rd, also features a soccer field and tennis courts; Peters Park, 1852 Clark Dr, offers a multi-use field and Cofer Park, 4259 N. Park Dr, features a softball field and a swimming pool open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals.

Recreational facilities in Clarkston include 7.6 acre Milam Park, which features picnic pavilions (available for rental), playground, lighted tennis courts (available by reservation, hourly charge), softball field, multi use field and an outdoor swimming pool offering recreational and instructional swim (seasonal passes or daily admission rate, no cost for senior citizens age 65 & up). Athletic fields are leased to local sports organizations. 15.14 acre Friendship Forest is a wildlife sanctuary housing a variety of wildlife including birds, butterflies, small mammals and all types of vegetation. County owned/operated Forty Oaks/Nature Preserve features a multi-use field and trails.

Recreational facilities in Doraville include Honeysuckle, Halpern and English Oak Parks, and Forest Fleming Arena, which collectively feature playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis & basketball courts and open fields. HoneySuckle Park and Forest Fleming Arena also offers football & soccer fields, Autumn Park and a Nature Center, Bernard Halpern Park also features BBQ Pits. DeKalb County owned and/or operated facilities include Pleasantdale and Windwood Hollow Parks, which collectively feature multi-use fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and trails. DeKalb County owned and/or operated recreation facilities in Dunwoody include 2 parks (Brook Run, Murphey Candler), Vanderlyn School and Dunwoody/Nature Center. Both parks and Vanderlyn School feature multi-use fields, picnic areas and trails. Vanderlyn School, 1877 Vanderlyn Park, also houses a basketball court. Murphey Candler Park, Vanderlyn School and Dunwoody/Nature Center all feature playgrounds; Murphey Candler Park and Dunwoody/Nature Center, 5321 Roberts Dr, both offer baseball diamonds. 135-acre Murphey Candler Park also features softball and football fields, tennis courts and a swimming pool open daily during the summer and offering recreational swimming (season passes or by daily admission), swim lessons, recreational and competitive swim teams and pool rentals.

DeKalb County owned and/or operated recreation facilities in Ellenwood include 8-acre County Line Park, 4059 Old River Rd and 35-acre Fork Creek Mountain, which both feature multi-use fields, picnic areas and trails. County Line Park also houses basketball & tennis courts, multi-use courts and a playground. Clayton County owned and/or operated recreation facilities include Grant Road Park 4255 Grant Rd and Pine Circle Park, 5671 Pine Circle, which both feature picnic tables, playgrounds, pavilions, and athletic fields; Grant Road Park also offers basketball courts.

Recreational facilities in Avondale include Lake Avondale, a gazebo, a pavilion, and barbecue grills. Fishing is permitted in Lake Avondale with a city fishing permit (no charge) available at City Hall, and the gazebo and pavilion are available for rental. DeKalb County owned and/or operated facilities include Lanier Gardens Park, a 1-acre neighborhood park offering an open space area.
