De Kalb County Public Schools operates 143 schools covering grades PK-12, which serve 98,713 students in the City of Atlanta, the communities of Decatur, Lithonia, Stone Mountain, Dunwoody, Ellenwood, Doraville, Chamblee, Tucker, Redan, Avondale Estates, Clarkston, Scottdale and Avondale, and all unincorporated areas. 89 schools are elementary level (PK-3, PK-5, PK-6, K-7), 21 are middle schools (6-8) and 20 are high schools (9-12). About a dozen schools have other grade configurations. Corralwood Educational Center covers PK-K. Kittredge Magnet School encompasses grades 4-6. DeKalb Alternative School takes in grades 4-12. East De Kalb Special Education Center and UHS of Laurel Heights both take in grades K-12. Student/teacher ratio is 14:1 (district-wide). The district employs 7,075 classroom teachers, 935 support personnel, and 535 administrators. 45% of teachers have a Bachelors Degree only, 46% have a Masters Degree. Per Pupil cost is $8,426. A variety of programs, services, and personnel are provided for Limited English Speaking (LEP), Gifted & Talented and Special Needs students. 4.3% of students are enrolled in the English to Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) program, 9.3% receive Special Education services, 10.2% are enrolled in Gifted Education programs. Support services for all students, as needed, include speech/language, tutoring and counseling.
